Fire Safety

Fire Extinguisher

Fire can be dangerous and should always be treated with care and caution.

Fire Safety in the home

  • Don't stand too near an open fire as your clothes could catch fire.
  • Never touch matches, lighters or candles or leave them where small children can get them.
  • Remind grown ups to check smoke alarms regularly to make sure the batteries are still working.
  • Turn off and unplug electrical equipment e.g. televisions and stereos, when they are not in use.

Smoke Alarms

Having a smoke alarm can help you and possibly save your life if there is a fire in your home, especially if you are asleep. You may not see the fire or smell the smoke in time to get out safely. Smoke alarms can sense if there is smoke in the air. They work with the smallest amount of smoke. When the smoke alarm goes off it makes a loud beeping noise. If the fire alarm goes off you should leave the house and get to safety as quickly as possible. The best place to put a fire alarm is on the ceiling.

If a fire breaks out:

When you hear the fire alarm or smell smoke you should get out of the house as quickly as possible. Remember that in a fire the house can fill with smoke very quickly so if this happens stay low to the ground as smoke rises and it will be easier to breathe and to see if you crawl along the floor. After you get out, stay out and call the fire brigade. Do not return to the house for any belongings.

Road Safety

Motor Car
In the car

  • The safest place place for a child to travel is in the back of the car.
  • Everybody travelling in the car should wear a seatbelt and children under 4 should wear a child restraint. Your seatbelt will keep you safe from being injured. If you see somebody not wearing their seatbelt you should tell them to put it on.
