MAYO COUNTY COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
Public Advised against use of Four Achill Beaches – Keel, Keem, Golden Strand & Dugort.
Mayo County Council in consultation with the HSE has announced that due to the influence of recent abnormal weather conditions, elevated levels of bacteria have been detected in the bathing waters.
Recreational use and bathing is not advised at the beaches of Keel, Keem, Golden Strand and Dugort.
Public bathing advisory notices have been posted on all of the affected beaches. The lifeguard presence at the relevant beaches remains unchanged. Meanwhile, the Blue Flags at all the relevant beaches have been temporarily removed until the results return to within the Blue Flag quality limits.
The results of routine tests on water samples at the four beaches have shown elevated levels of E-coli. The Environment Section of Mayo County Council arranged further testing to be conducted yesterday 26th July, 2012 and also today 27th July 2012, the results of which will be known on Saturday 28th July 2012 and Sunday 29th July 2012.
It is expected that resumption of bathing will be recommended when the follow up results are received.
