Westport Town & Environs Development Plan 2010-2016

The Westport Town & Environs Development Plan 2010-2016 was adopted by Westport Town Council and Mayo County Council on Thursday 28th January 2010 and came into effect four weeks after that date. The plan provides a framework upon which future development within the plan area can be assessed. The plan consists of:

  •  Westport Town & Environs Development Plan 2010-2016
  • Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA Statement; Non-Technical Summary of Environmental Report; Environmental Report)
  • Appropriate Assessment Conclusion Statement

The plan includes an Architectural Conservation Area. A number of structures have also been added to the Record of Protected Structures for Westport Town. Lists of Protected Structures for the plan area, along with a description of the Architectural Conservation Area, are set out in Appendix 1 of the plan.

Proposed Variation No.4 Westport Town & Environs Development Plan 2010-2016

Mayo County Council proposes to vary the Westport Town & Environs Plan 2010-2016 in accordance with Section 13 of the Planning and Development Act 2000, as amended. The reasons for the Proposed Variation to the Plan are: 1.To incorporate the provisions of the Urban Regeneration and Housing Act 2015, with respect to the Vacant Site Levy and Urban Renewal and Regeneration into the Plans, through – (a) Inclusion of objectives for the development and renewal of designated areas, in need of residential development and regeneration, (b) Identification of such designated areas on maps in the respective Plans, (c) Integration of the revised requirements of Section 10(2)(h) of the Planning and Development Acts 2000 - 2015 (as amended under the Urban Regeneration and Housing Act 2015), relating to Urban Renewal and Regeneration, into the respective Development Plans and (d) Incorporation of consequential and other changes to the Plans arising from the Proposed Variation Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) & Appropriate Assessment (AA) screening were undertaken in respect of the proposed variation. It has been determined that the proposed variation will not have significant effects on the environment and an environmental report is not required. The appropriate assessment screening has indicated that a full appropriate assessment is not required. The Proposed Variation along with the SEA and AA determinations are available for public inspection until Thursday 24th November. Please note that the Variation No.4 document shows only the relevant sections of the Westport Development Plan which it is proposed to change, not the entire Plan. Therefore it is advised that the Variation No.4 document is read in conjunction with the current Westport & Environs Development Plan 2010-2016 All documents associated with the proposed variation are below:

Forward Planning Updates




At its April 2019 meeting, the Northern & Western Regional Assembly resolved to Materially Amend the Draft Regional Spatial & Economic Strategy (published in November 2018).   

These amendments are now available to view on , together with the accompanying SEA & AA documentation.

 It is open to any individual or party to make a written submission on the Material Amendments to the Draft. They can do so between 4th Aug – 11th Oct. 2019 either via the email to  or by sending their submission to the following address:

 RSES Material Alteration Submissions, Northern & Western Regional Assembly, The Square, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. All submissions will be considered prior to the adoption of the RSES, anticipated to be finalized before the end of 2019. 



In accordance with the provisions of Section 169 of the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended) and the Planning and Development Regulations 2001 – 2019, the documents below are required to be kept  on public display for a period of at least 6 weeks from Wednesday 29th May 2019.

Mayo County Development Plan Review Process is paused until after the Regional Spatial & Economic Strategy (RSES) is published.

The RSES is due to be published in early 2019, please check back then for further updates on the preparation of the County Development Plan.
