Arts

The county arts service is based on the principles of quality, access, inclusion and long-term value, so that the arts and associated areas are not separate, elitist activities for the educated and experienced, but enjoyable, accessible and challenging events for all to experience.

Environment

The Environment Section of the Mayo County Council is responsible for waste management, recycling, green schools initiative and the upkeep of beaches and burial grounds amoungst other things.

Fire Service

Mayo County Council is the Fire Authority for the administrative area of County Mayo and the three Town Council areas of Castlebar, Westport and Ballina. The Council currently employs 136 fire fighters in 12 fire stations and 8 hose and ladder units located around the county.

Housing

The Housing Section of the Mayo County Council deals with Local Authority Housing, Voluntary Housing, Shared Ownership System, Affordable Housing Scheme, Low cost housing sites, Mortgage Allowance Scheme, Disabled Persons Grant.

Motor Tax

The Motor Tax Section of Mayo County Council deals with Taxation of Vehicles, Driver licencing, Appointment of garage as authorised tester for commerical vehicles, Issue of Certificate of Road worthiness for commerical vehicles, Supply of licencing particulars, Certification of Traffic Offences (Gardai), Certification of Traffic Offences (Parking), Issue of Trade Plates, Issue of RT2 receipts (Public Service Vehicle licences).

Planning

The planning section is responsible for all planning decisions made in the County outside of the three town administrative areas.

Rates & Revenue

Mayo County Council's Rates and Revenue Department deals with the collection of Commercial Rates, Water Charges and Refuse Charges.

Roads

The Road Transport & Road Safety section of Mayo County Council covers a number of areas in relation to the County's roads. In addition to safer roads being provided through road improvement, maintenance and restoration schemes, the Council has completed a number of accident reduction and traffic calming schemes in recent years. Water & Sewerage

The policy of Mayo County Council is to improve and extend Water Services in the County. Full details in connection with schemes completed in recent years along with on going projects and future plans are available on the Water & Sewerage main page above.

Heritage

Some of the principal areas addressed by the Heritage Officer include: Promoting interest, education, knowledge and pride in Mayo’s heritage. Providing advice and information to the public and Local Authority staff. Data collection. Liasing with other bodies in the promotion of heritage Strategies, policies and projects.

Higher Education Grants (HEG)

Mayo County Council operates a scheme of Higher Education Grants in respect of approved full time third level education courses at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels. Grants are available for approved courses at universities and certain other educational institutions within Ireland and other EU countries.
