An unmissable month of music – Mayo County Council Summer Music Series 2009

An unmissable month of music – Mayo County Council Summer Music Series 2009

Mayo County Council's Summer Music Series will feature eight musical performances in venues all around the county.  Achill, Castlebar, Ballyhaunis, Belmullet, Westport, Ballina, Charlestown and Louisburgh are all stops on the Summer Music Series in 2009. Many tastes are catered for in an exciting, eclectic programme featuring some of the finest musical talent from local, national and international musicians.  Booking is essential and can be done through Mayo County Council Arts Office.  All events are free of charge.

Kicking off the series in Holy Trinity Church, Westport on Friday 3rd July at 8pm, the Irish Baroque Orchestra promises to gives the series’ first audience the rare and precious opportunity to hear music which recreates the vivid colours and textures of the baroque sound world.

The David Munnelly Band has been entertaining American and European audiences on a regular basis since 2005. The combination of the wildness of spirit, which West Mayo music is famous for, with the jazz and swing rhythms that began to be heard in the New York of the 1920s promise to make Thursday July 9th at 8pm in St Michaels Church Ballina one to remember.

On Friday 17th July at 8pm the series then moves to Louisburgh Parish Hall with music on the evening from Emer Mayock, Donal Siggins and Jean Michel Veillon.  This trio came together through a Music Network Tour in 2007 and since then has continued to explore and perform Irish, Breton and newly composed repertoire.

Charlestown Town Hall Arts Centre on Saturday 18th of July will host The Sick and Indigent Song Club, a collection of talented musicians who play old time music dipping into a diverse range of styles including blues, country, folk, sea shanties, country gospel, Americana and bluegrass.

Elizabeth Cooney and Redmond O’Toole will perform their new duo programme at a number of summer concerts this year, including a performance at St. Thomas' Church, Dugort, Achill on Friday 24 July 8.00pm.  Considered among the elite Irish musicians of their generation, both were selected as the annual National Concert Hall “Rising Star”, Elizabeth in 2006 and Redmond in 2009 and they bring a broad range of repertoire and performing experience to the duo performances.

Bringing the sound of the Caribbean to Castlebar on Saturday July 25th at 2pm, Ebony Steelband, from London will perform an outdoor concert in Market Square.  Having won the Panorama Steelband Competition, which takes place in London annually, more times than any other band – this group promise to get audiences moving to their intoxicating beats.

Áras Inis Gluaire, the Arts Centre in Belmullet will host Meteor award winning Mick Flannery on Thursday July 30th at 8pm.  In the last year Mick has gone from part time stone mason to one of Irelands most sought after musicians. Since the release of his critically acclaimed album ‘White Lies’ he has played a string of sold out shows all over Ireland.

The final event of the Series this year takes place in The Friary, Ballyhaunis on Friday July 31st at 8pm.  Matt Molloy, John Carty and Art McGlynn will treat the audience to a feast traditional music.  Arguably, all masters of their art, the combination promises to be sheer excellence.

Please be advised that the series has a huge following and although the concerts are all free of charge and open to the public booking in advance is essential (max six people per booking).
