Mayo County Council Arts Office, Library Service and Oifig na Gaeilge are delighted to present an evening of poetry with Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill & Geraldine Mitchell in Castlebar at 8pm as part of All Ireland Poetry Day 2009. In light of the enormous success of All Ireland Poetry Day 2008 and in a continuing bid to raise consciousness about poetry now and in the future Poetry Ireland are working in partnership with a number of local authorities to bring poetry to the masses. The reading will take place in Mayo County Library on October 1st, the event is free and all are welcome to come along on the evening. Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill is one of our best known Irish language writers and a poet of international acclaim. Since her first published collection of poetry “An Dealg Droigin” (1981), Nuala has published consistently and her works include poetry collections, children’s plays, screen plays and anthologies. Her work has received numerous international awards and scholarships and has been translated into many languages. She was Ireland Professor of Poetry from 2001 -2003.
Geraldine Mitchell lives near Louisburgh, Co. Mayo. Born in Dublin, she lived in France, Algeria and Spain before returning to Ireland in 1992. Her poems have been widely published in journals and online. She is also the author of two novels for young people and a biography. She was awarded the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award in 2008.
All Ireland Poetry Day is an opportunity for poetry enthusiasts and poetry novices alike to come along and listen to these two fantastic readers. The event is free of charge and open to the public. Mayo County Council wishes to acknowledge the support of Poetry Ireland and the Arts Council of Ireland in bringing Mayo audiences this event.
