Mayo County Council Arts Office Summer Music Series drew to a rapturous close in the spectacular setting of the Friary in Ballyhaunis. The lively Scottish Group Blazing Fiddles were the finale to the Summer Music Series where five fiddles, piano and guitar resonated round the friary.
This concert was the last of nine that have taken place during July in towns throughout Mayo. The Series kicked off with Sean Nós singer Iarla Ó Lionáird and friends who gave a memorable performance at the beautiful setting of St. Michaels Church Ballina. Talented singer Mary Mc Partlan and gifted fiddle, guitar and harmonica player Seamie O’Dowd played The Town Hall Arts centre Charlestown, to a great reception. The National Youth Orchestra gave a breathtaking performance of classical gems to an extremely appreciative Belmullet audience. Musical phenomenon Méta Méta gave a unique performance to a lively Louisburgh Parish Hall audience. The Rough Deal String Band played a vibrant selection of music on the scenic island of Inisturk. Market Square, Castlebar, resonated with the Brazilan sounds of MaSamba. The Callino Quartet gave a wonderfully moving concert in the idyllic setting of Holy Trinity Church Westport. No Crows wowed the audience in St Thomas’s Church Dugort and Blazin’ Fiddles rounded of the Summer Music series in Ballyhaunis.
The Summer Music Series catered for all tastes with a diverse eclectic programme featuring some of the finest musical talent from local, national and international musicians. The Summer Music Series traversed all musical genres, from folk to classical, from Old Time Country to Traditional, from Afro Cuban Jazz to Samba. Venues ranged from parish halls to Churches and each venue drew an eager audience, some following the beat of music to each event.
