Grounded Youth Theatre. Post Event.

Fifty teenagers descended on GMIT on Saturday March 9th to avail of a Dance Masterclass with Catherine Donnelly and a Physical Theatre Masterclass with Jed Murray.  These Masterclasses were part of Grounded, a youth theatre event, organised by Mayo Arts Service, Mayo County Council, and the event was supported through funding from Creative Ireland. Attendees were a mixture of those attending youth theatre and those with an interest in finding out more about youth theatre.

Catherine Donnelly is a performer / choreographer and a member of Dance Ireland, living and based in Mayo, she has been working as an independent dance artist for nearly 20 years. Jed Murrayis a writer, director, actor and drama facilitator from Dublin City centre. He has worked on projects such as ‘The Boys of Foley St’ (Anu). ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Love Hate’ and ‘Vikings’.

There was great energy on the day and teenagers travelled from all over Mayo to gain from the day. A bus load of participants came from Mayo Youth Theatre (Ballina), their facilitator Ronán Colhoun was a supervisor on the day.  Two bus full of participants came from Floating Island Youth Theatre, (Westport) and their Facilitator Fiona Keane was a supervisor on the day.  Participants also came from Do you play House (Castlebar/Donna Ruane), Clann Machua (Kiltimagh), other individuals came from Achill and Claremorris.

A key part of the day was the chance to meet other teenagers who also had an interest in youth theatre.  There was an opportunity for participants to get a free Acting headshot with a professional photographer.  The Event was videoed by a local professional videographer.  Orla Henihan, Arts Access officer with the Linenhall Arts Centre gave a talk on attending theatre.  As part of Grounded, attendees can avail of free Theatre tickets to Fishamble’s Underneath in the Linenhall (April 17th).

Mayo Arts Service were delighted with the event and to be able to provide the opportunity for the youth of Mayo.
