On Sight 2019 - Coffee morning & launch event

Visual artist Niamh McCann has been awarded the commission for On Sight 2019 - a partnership project with The National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Mayo County Council Arts Service and Mayo Artsquad. Niamh invites members of the local public, particularly older voices and people with an interest in local history, to attend a coffee morning at the Museum at 11am on Friday Sept 27th to hear more about her proposed project and to share stories, memories and knowledge.

Niamh is creating an outdoor sculptural which work will be officially unveiled on the grounds of the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life on Friday, 11th October at 2pm. All are welcome to attend.

Niamh’s submission titled IMRAM Pavilion/ Mother’s Lament will reflect on traditional craft-making and architecture, to create an innovative, contemporary sculpture. The art work is inspired by class of Old Irish tales concerning a hero's sea journey to the Otherworld. For this project the artist looks to create an outdoors sculptural work which will function both as an object but also as a place of temporary shelter, reflecting and provoking timely questions: How does tradition and craft influence the relationship between past and present? What experiences of space and structure evoke a sense of home? How is a feeling of rootedness and belonging created through ritual and craft?

Niamh McCann is a Dublin-based visual artist who currently works out of the Fire Station Artists Studios (FSAS). Niamh McCann is recipient of various Arts Council of Ireland awards, and fellowships at Cemeti Arthouse, Indonesia; HIAP, International Artists' Residency, Helsinki, Finland, URRA Artist Residency, Argentina and of Perspective and EV+A exhibition awards. Her work is represented in the collections of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the OPW, Limerick City Gallery, Swansea City Council, The London Institute and the Hiscox Collection, London.
