Escape from the hustle-bustle and demands of everyday life to the tranquillity of Cnoc Suain in the West of Ireland, and immerse yourself in the written word for a weekend. Our courses offer you the chance to leave behind the demands of the outside world and dedicate precious time to your writing. Cnoc Suain is a lovingly restored pre-famine hill village close to Spiddal, County Galway, surrounded by the inspiring landscape of Connemara. This unique environment will give you the time and space to write, supported by the expertise of published poets. No qualifications are required, and we aim to provide a creative environment where all poets can find inspiration, hone their craft and benefit from structured and constructive feedback.

The work undertaken will be varied and stimulating: morning workshops will involve reading poems together and short writing-exercises; time will also be set aside for longer writing or editing exercises; tutors will offer one-to-one feedback on work submitted, and guidance on how to improve reading your poems in public.  In the evenings there will be poetry readings by established poets and participants will be encouraged to read their work also. As a result of this total immersion and the absence of the usual distractions, this short period of time will seem much longer than a weekend. To maximise the potential benefits of the course, we recommend (but do not insist) that you share your writing with the rest of the group in workshops. We also recommend that you familiarize yourself with some of your tutors’ work prior to your arrival.

Guidelines for Good Practice for Participatory Arts in Healthcare Contexts

The Waterford Healing Arts Trust and the Health Service Executive South (Cork) Arts and Health Programme, with financial support from the Arts Council, recently published Guidelines for Good Practice for Participatory Arts in Healthcare Contexts, which were produced by the Centre for Medical Humanities at Durham University.

The Guidelines are designed to present clear, concise and user-friendly direction to those working in the area of participatory arts in healthcare contexts. The partnership of arts and health can bring new challenges to artists, healthcare professionals, clients and those working in the health-related community and voluntary sector, and it is hoped that these guidelines will help successfully negotiate these partnerships.

The Guidelines were developed through consultation with those currently working in the field of arts and health. They can be downloaded from www.waterfordhealingarts.com and/or www.hse.ie/eng/services/news/Arts_Practice_in_Healthcare_–_New_Guidelines.html

Those of you working in the field of arts and health are invited to take time to consider and interpret the Guidelines in the context of your own practice, and send feedback by the 31 October 2010. The Guidelines will be reviewed in the light of feedback received.

Artist in the Community Scheme: Four Essays

A new publication from Create and the Arts Council highlights the exciting practice of artists working with diverse communities.

In the publication, Artist in the Community Scheme: Four Essays, artists - Rhona Byrne, Susan Gogan, Declan Gorman and Ríonach Ní Néill, describe their collaboration with communities of interest and place, and document the work produced through the Artist in the Community Scheme, which Create manages on behalf of the Arts Council.

The book shows how the Scheme has become a key mechanism through which collaborative arts is now understood as a vibrant and dynamic contemporary art practice.

Young People, Creative Action and Social Change - Now available to download!!

This is an important piece of research, commissioned by the National Youth Council of Ireland’s Arts Programme. Through a specific sample group and through focused questions, Anna Fiona Keogh (researcher) has tried to follow the sometimes faint, often mercurial line of young people’s engagement with an art form. We have tried to ascertain (in as much as we can ever quantify these things) what is unique and special about youth arts, what exactly happens in the life of a young person when they engage with an art form and what begins to happen in their creative and imaginative processes. We don’t suggest that this research is exhaustive or conclusive, but it maps a patch of ground in the landscape.

The study involved conducting in-depth research with approximately 50 young people, between the ages of 10 and 18, involved in five youth arts projects or programmes. The projects were selected on a number of criteria including diverse art forms and geographical location. Also, we aimed for a sample which reflects the views of young people from different social backgrounds.

Visual Artist's Ireland launches Social Networking site for Visual Artists

Visual Artists Ireland (VAI) has launched a new social networking site for the visual arts – www.thecommonroom.net. Visual Artists Ireland has been helping professional visual artists since 1980 with an ever widening group of services. Following discussion and research, VAI wished to supply a further level of public service to the visual arts. Noting the benefits of social networking sites for increasing a person's circle of contacts and connecting users to familiar and new people through mutual acquaintances and common interests, VAI created The Common Room Social Network for the Visual Arts. With forums, blogs, image & video galleries, special interest group creation, and links to other networking sites such as Twitter, thecommonroom.net provides a convenient one stop area for people working in the visual arts to keep in contact, as well as providing a free platform for presentation, discussion and group support.
