Con Structure: Arne Witt

Official Opening: Wednesday 7th July, 8pm

Con Structure shows the view of a constructed world. Daily situations, things of daily life and media news are creating the pool Arne Witt develops this work from. With his work he questions and creates new connections and stories between what is so familiar to us.

The artistic media by itself forms part of the questioning. Through a variety of visual arts media (including objects, paintings, drawings and video projections), Arne Witt tries to break barriers between the different disciplines in art. As an extension of this, he also combines techniques and materials, using non-traditional art materials.

Free admission. All are welcome to attend, exhibition runs until 31st July.

Arne Witt: Gallery talk

Thursday 8th July, 7pm

Arne Witt will give a Gallery Talk on his work and practise. Arne Witt was born in Germany and has been living and working in Ireland for the past three years. His practise embraces a variety of forms and media, but has an underlying interest in research.

For this talk he will discuss his exhibition ‘Con: Structure’, and how it fits into the wider context of his practise and development as an artist. Adm: Free. All welcome.

The Pool Series / Locháin Inis Mór. Ursula Kavanagh. June 17th – July 18th

The title of the exhibition derives from the artist’s inspired and close observation of the hundreds of tidal rockpools surrounding Poll na Bpeist (The Worm Hole/The Serpent’s Lair), an olympic-size pool carved out of the rocks by the tides on the Atlantic side of the island of Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands where Kavanagh lived and worked for 12 years (1997-2009) . The area where the rockpools lie is a windswept “underworld” which appears and disappears with the incoming and outgoing tides.

'Drawing Studies: A Celebration ' June 17th  –  July 18th

From the National Gallery of Ireland   Education and Outreach.

An exhibition "Drawing Studies: A Celebration", featuring 26 drawings by students of the Gallery's Drawing Studies Course. In the Drawing Studies course, students are introduced to the collection of old and modern masters, including works by Vermeer, Goya, Rubens, Picasso and Orpen, selected by the tutors to reflect particular techniques they wish to illustrate. Practical work includes sketching from sculptures, studying light and shade and gaining an insight into interiors, perspective and proportion.

Bernie Masterson July 22  – August 15th

Exhibition of paintings.  Her works emerge from a personal interaction with and reaction to the landscape, the environment, nature and with life. The “Total” experience of what is seen or felt becomes part of the human psyche. During the creative process, that essence is revisited and the emotionality of the subject matter becomes an expressed experience instead of being an internally exclusive one. The end result the finished work becomes a testimony to a sense of an emotional personal connectedness to that original total experience.

‘First Intent’ Exhibition by Mary Foudy O’Halloran

Galway artist, Mary Foudy O'Halloran’s exhibition - First Intent - will be on display in the gallery at Áras Inis Gluaire for the duration of Féile Iorrais 2010. Mary graduated from Galway Mayo Institute of Technology in 2006. Her work encompasses her daily life - her inspiration is the everyday.  While aware of the transience of life, she is intrigued by the indelible marks left by all living things, and the manner in which these traces influence our lives. Her work is a dialogue between the figurative and the abstract. Using mixed media, locating and recreating the ordinary she builds up layers, making marks, and balancing tones to make something new.  She is challenged by the properties of her mediums. She believes that it is in the process that the painting is found. First Intent has its origins in a small bundle of oddments from a London fabric shop.
