TONY O’MALLEY STUDIO RESIDENCY

The RHA is delighted to offer the Tony O’Malley Studio Residency. During his lifetime Tony O’Malley was the recipient of subsided studios and accommodation in St. Ives, Cornwall. Administered by the Arts Council of Great Britain it offered the artist time to concentrate on creating work. Jane O’Malley has never forgotten the privilege of those decades for herself and Tony. A number of years ago she acquired Tony’s family home in Callan Co. Kilkenny. Jane, working with her architect, set about renovating the building into a first class facility for an artist to live and work in. And in association with the Royal Hibernian Academy she now wishes to offer this home/studio to an artist on an annual basis.

The house and adjoining studio are situated in Callan town, Co Kilkenny. The converted shop and house is decorated to the highest standards and boasts a modern bright kitchen and separate living room with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. A small inner courtyard links the front and back of the house and beyond the home’s living area is the studio. The studio has a double height ceiling with plenty of natural light. Double doors lead onto a large landscaped private garden area. The studio has a mezzanine level also which could be used as an office area if required. The house and studio are fully furnished to the highest standards and offer a superior living and work place for any artist.

The artist awarded the residency will have the exclusive use of the house and studio for 12 months, from January to December 2011, at a nominal cost of €250 per month. The artist would be responsible for his or her own utility costs. This full-time residency is for an artist who works primarily in the medium of paint. The studio is not suitable for sculptors.

To apply for the residency, artists are asked to submit the following:

A current CV. A cover letter detailing the proposed usage of the studio and a work plan outlining ideas for the residency. Up to 12 images of work, preferably presented in a printed format.

Applications should be sent to the RHA Academy Co-ordinator, Ciara Timlin by July 30th. Short listed applicants will be called for interview in mid-September. Requests for further information should be directed to the Academy Co-ordinator, Ciara Timlin, email ciara@rhagallery.ie phone 01 6612558.

ART IN THE OPEN 2010 plein air painting festival

30th July to 1st August (public holiday weekend) Wexford and Enniscorthy.  www.artintheopen.org

Travel to the southeast during Art in the Open Festival and you will find lots of artists at their easels on the streets of Enniscorthy and on the quayside of Wexford, in lanes and in doorways, capturing the light, the bustle and the character of these two historic Irish towns. The third festival of plein air painting will be held throughout August bank holiday weekend. Over 100 artists are taking part, travelling from USA, Europe, UK and all over Ireland, to paint together in Wexford and Enniscorthy and to take part in what may be the largest annual festival of outdoor painting in Europe,

Like Constable, Monet, Van Gogh and Sargent, today's outdoor artists typically seek to capture an authentic sense of place and time and fleeting effects of light and shadow they also value the opportunity to paint and share with other artists.

Encouraged by tourist interests, this social aspect among professionals and amateurs as well as a love of fresh air and nature has given rise to a new plein air painting movement across America and now in Europe.  An urban plein air festival like Art in the Open also encourages interaction with the public who seldom have such an opportunity to observe the creative process at close quarters and who seem to enjoy them almost as much as the artists themselves. There are double-takes from passers-by seeing an artist at work in the street and there is often delight  at seeing familiar a scene through an artist's eyes, or watching a blank canvas transformed into a painting.

Art in the Open also features demonstrations and workshops for those who don't feel ready to boldly take their easels onto the street and six extra painting day-trips are scheduled to sites around County Wexford in the days before and after the bank holiday weekend. Fnished paintings, the product of 3 days of concentrated activity by so many artists can be seen in an impressive exhibition which opens on Monday 2nd August at 3pm in White's Hotel, Wexford when the Mayoral Prize and several other substantial cash awards will be presented.
