First Steps in Music, with Edel McDonnell

Ballina Arts Centre

Monday 12th July – Friday 16th July

Monday 19th July – Friday 23rd July

This July, Ballina Arts Centre is presenting this exciting Summer Camp – First Steps in Music.

The camp will cater for a variety of age groups (see below), and offers an opportunity for children to get an introduction to music-making with experienced music teacher Edel McDonnell.

The Camp has three strands:

First Steps in Music: Parents & Children (age 3 & 4) offers a nurturing environment for parents and children to develop a love of music-making. Children attending this workshop will experience activities which will prepare them for the development of accurate rhythmic and singing skills, and sensitivity to the expressive qualities in music - in an enjoyable and stimulating way, through a carefully chosen repertoire of songs and rhymes. The young child’s response to pitch, beat and rhythm develops in a natural way through active experience of these elements. All learning is unconscious at this stage and takes place in a playful manner with the emphasis on music making and enjoyment.

First Steps in Music (age 5 & 6) is built upon the principles advocated by Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967), a Hungarian composer and educationalist. Kodály’s approach to music education was based on teaching, learning and understanding music through the experience of singing, giving direct access to the world of music with the technical problems involved with the use of an instrument. His desire was to see music education built on a philosophy that music is for everyone.

First Steps in Music: Recorder (age 7, 8 & 9) is an extension of the Kodály concept through the use of an instrument. When students are already immersed in a rich vocal environment, recorder is the best first instrument. The recorder will be used interchangeably with the voice in singing games and other musical activities. Students will need to purchase their own 'Aulos' Descant Recorder prior to the commencement of the summer camp.

Edel McDonnell (MA, BAMus, LRSM, DipMus RIAM) currently lectures in the Musicianship Department at the CIT Cork School of Music and on the BA in Early Childhood Care and Education course and on the BA in Social Care Studies in Cork Institute of Technology. Edel completed a Certificate in Kodály Music Education Concept from Silver Lake College, Wisconsin, USA, in July 2009.  In 2008, she pursued a study tour at the Zoltán Kodály Pedagogical Institute of Music, Kecskemet, Hungary and also obtained a Professional Development Certificate in Early Childhood Music (Kodály) with the British Kodály Academy, England. She is currently pursuing a part-time Masters of Music EducationDegree (Kodály emphasis) at Silver Lake College, USA.
