The Arts Acts permit a local authority to assist with money, or in kind, events or activities which would, in the opinion of the local authority: stimulate public interest in the arts, promote knowledge, appreciation and practice of the arts or improve the standards of the arts within its functional area.
In this Act ‘the arts’ means any creative or interpretative expression (whether traditional or contemporary) in whatever form, and includes, in particular, visual arts, theatre, literature, music, dance, opera, film, circus and architecture, and includes any medium when used for those purposes.

SuperValu in association with the Irish Sun, is asking you to submit ideas about what you think will enhance your community. Whether that is with the development of a nature trail, addition of park benches along a river walk, renovating the community hall or commissioning a piece of art to be displayed at the heart of the community, the SuperValu Community bursary is inviting people all over Ireland to “Take Part, It's your town” and let them know what you think will make the biggest difference to your town, and the people living in it. The Bursary will recognise and reward an idea that will provide a much needed facility or makes a significant improvement to the landscape of your local community. The winning community will receive €30,000 to help bring their idea to life.Full details and timetable at http://www.supervalu.ie/in_the_community/community_bursary.717.bursary.html (note shortlisted candidates go to a public vote)
The Royal Dublin Society (RDS) is to embark on a new project Collective Contemporary Art: RDS. CCA: RDS will feature 120 artists, 2 exhibitions and a programme of talks and workshops. CCA: RDS will be selected by an international panel from applications along criteria based on quality, exhibition track record and professionalism. The theme of the exhibition will be A Way of Collecting (working title), which will be curated by Helen Carey, and will be installed in the original Industries Hall, redolent of the historical character of the RDS, 5-7 November 2010.
The audience will be comprised of gallerists, curators, art lovers and many who travel to these events outside of Ireland. However, very importantly it is also meant for the Irish public to see the work of artists whose work is not very often presented to the public, largely because they are unrepresented or often their activity does not fit the commercial sphere. The associated programme of talks and workshops will address the aspects of exhibition with discussions on Collecting, Display, Exhibition, Artistic Practice as a curator and as an artist. It is hoped that this new arena will add something to the already rich landscape of Irish Art for the artist and public alike.

The Community Foundation for Ireland launches the first ever Women’s Fund for Ireland. The fund, dedicated solely to supporting women’s causes, is the first of its kind in Ireland and follows international trends.
The Fund will tackle the problems facing women and girls in Ireland today. It will evolve over time but it will target critical issues such as combating poverty and violence to improving access to healthcare and education. It will also target areas such as trafficking and prostitution, integration of new communities, women in the arts, literacy and support for carers. It will be dedicated to supporting these issues by giving small grants to enable positive change at the grassroots and strategic level and tackle women’s inequality at its source.
The fund is being launched with The Community Foundation for Ireland pledging €100,000 as a challenge grant towards the fund. So for every €1000 raised for endowment by an individual, family, business or organisation, a matching amount of €500 will be provided by The Community Foundation. It is being supported by Irish Tatler magazine and is their chosen charity of the year for 2010.
The first grants from The Women’s Fund for Ireland will be made on International Women’s Day in 2011.For Further Information about this and further funds from the Community Foundation for Ireland see http://www.foundation.ie
