Dean Spanley New Zealand, UK 2008 100 minutes Cert: G

A fantastical comedy-drama for all ages, based on Lord Dunsany’s 1936 novella My Talks with Dean Spanley, about the difficult relationship between a man and his cantankerous father, who is unable to come to terms with the death of his elder son in the Boer war and the subsequent death of his wife from a broken heart. A lecture on the transmigration of souls by a visiting swami leads to a chance meeting with singular new local clergyman Dean Spanley, whose liking for Tokay wine leads to a spiritual revalation that may lead to emotional redemption for the father. A small gem and a real charmerScreening supported by Seven Seas Active 55. “Fraser’s delightfully eccentric and ultimately touching film set in Edwardian England features O’Toole on sublime form as an irascible curmudgeon...” - Michael Dwyer, The Irish Times “An eccentric, absorbing and rewarding film...
