In a change to their exhibition programme for the month of October, Ballina Arts Centre will present an exhibition of photographs by acclaimed Dutch photographer Willem Vermaase. ‘Ó Cheann go Ceann’ documents an art project in schools by sculptor Leah Durkan, during her tenure as Artist in Residence with Mayo County Council in 1997-98.
In 1998, Durkan worked with 108 Transition year students throughout the county on a project to commemorate the events of 1798, The Year of the French.
The artist directed one-day intensive workshops in each school, during which time each student carved a head from plaster and sand, expressing their own feelings and emotions as a reflection of their life in Mayo in 1998. The heads were then placed in the landscape around Bofeenaun, where they were subject to weathering and erosion and decay. Thus the changing features reflected both changing emotions and natural change through the ages.
The creative process and resulting artworks were recorded over the course of the project by Willem Vermaase. This involved photographing the students and the artist during workshops as they created their sculptures and the resulting placement of the finished work in the Mayo countryside. It is a selection of these photographs which constitute an exhibition which clearly illustrates the intensity of feeling that both students and artists gave to the project.
Willem Vermaase is a freelance photographer and photo editor of the magazine kM. He considers his work mainly as documentary photography, and prefers the use of black and white material. In addition to the series of artists portraits he makes for kM, Vermaase is working on a number of long term projects, both in Ireland and the Netherlands. The project was aptly named ‘O Cheann go Ceann – A Wave of Emotion’, in that it deals with interaction between people but also deals with change through time.
‘Ó Cheann go Ceann’ will be officially opened on Wednesday 6th October at 8pm.
Free admission. All are welcome to attend, exhibition runs until 30th October.
