JOHN HOBAN BOOK LAUNCH RUBY ROOM TF ROYAL HOTEL

Tuesday 26th October 2010, 8pm

"FROM THE PLAIN OF THE YEW TREE" The Lifetime Journey of a County Mayo Musician

Foreword by Christy Moore."Meeting Johnny Hoban is always like a good fleadh Cheoil for me. I look forward to lingering with him upon ‘the plain of the yew tree’. He is a pillar in my life. Nelson would only be in the ha’penny place. Take me home to Mayo Johnny Hoban...”

Christy Moore  This is the story of County Mayo singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and teacher John Hoban. From the Plain of the Yew Tree takes the reader on a journey through music and time across the five continents. The author invites us to join him on his rambles through Ireland, London, Australia, America and many other places, meeting, listening to, and playing with every kind of ‘musicianer’. Poets, artists, writers, mystics and people from every walk of life are traveling on this mystery train with John Hoban as he unravels his life memories and explores his deep relationship of trust and belief in music. Music has been his guide and his constant companion through good times, bad times and other times. Music has been survival itself for John. This tale presents us with the tapestry of a life lived through music, providing us with a rare insight into the life of a modern-day Troubadour. This is a unique tale told in an unmistakably West of Ireland voice. A story told with humour, sensitivity and devotion.

"John interprets the events happening around him and puts them in an emotional or sensitive context that has given him a wide body of very personal material.  The well travelled troubadour has hit five continents at least and found something to write about in each but the Irish connections stand out.....you can witness his homage to a life on the road and the people and places that inhabit his songs.  You soon realize that very little is wasted or unobserved.  He lives in the music that he creates in his inimitable style that is hard to categorize beyond the realm of folk music."

Paul Keating, The Irish Voice.

*John will also be launching his new CD called "Episodes" on the night.

ABOUT JOHN:

Castlebar , Ireland native, John Hoban - musician, singer, songwriter, author - has played and taught music all his life in the Troubadour tradition.  He is highly regarded nationally and internationally for the unique and deeply personal nature of his music. The ultimate multi-instrumentalist, John plays fiddle, melodeon, guitar, banjo, percussion, mandolin, mandocello, harmonica etc in addition to being a singer and composer of wonderful songs and music.

His songs combine very personal and original lyrics/music with various influences rooted in local and worldwide traditions.  It has been said that he could make music from a sheaf of oats.  Behind the talent and enthusiasm of John's music, is a caring, wise artist.  John Hoban's music brings us back to the source. He searched out music from old masters, showing deep respect for the social contexts in which music was played for generations.  His songs and music bridges the worlds of improvisation, experimentation and tradition.

This is an open invitation to all music and book lovers and friends of John Hoban.

For information on the Launch night contact John Hoban at johnhoban@hotmail.com or 087 743 1628

The Arts Council announces deadline for Reel Art 2010

The Arts Council has announced the deadline for the 2010 Reel Art scheme.  Launched in 2008, Reel Art is designed to provide film artists with a unique opportunity to make highly creative, imaginative and experimental documentaries on an artistic theme.  Operated in association with Filmbase and the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, Reel Art will wholly support three films with grants of €70,000-€80,000 per project.  Reel Art films will premiere at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival in February 2012.

The deadline for receipt of applications is Monday, 18 October at 5pm.

The Arts Council’s purpose in offering the Reel Art scheme is to support film artists to make documentary art films that would not otherwise get made. A key aim of the scheme is to complement, rather than replicate, the documentary and other funding programmes offered by the Arts Council, broadcasters and funding agencies in Ireland.  Reel Art projects should be conceived for theatrical exhibition at film festivals and in arthouse cinema settings.  Only proposals for original, imaginative and aesthetically-driven treatments of arts subjects will be considered while proposals that offer visually engaging, creative and experimental approaches to their subject will be prioritised.

Updated guidelines for Reel Art 2010, together with application forms for the scheme are available for download from the website www.reelart.ie.

Ger Reidy, Damien Drohan & Martin Dyar for October ‘Over The Edge: Open Reading’

The October Over The Edge: Open Reading takes place in Galway City Library, St. Augustine Street, Galway on Thursday, October 28th, 6.30-8pm. The Featured Readers are Ger Reidy, Damien Drohan & Martin Dyar.

Ger Reidy was born near Westport in Co. Mayo in 1958, qualified as a Civil Engineer in 1979 and started writing poetry in 1980. His first collection of poems, Pictures from a Reservation, was published by Dedalus Press in 1998, and received widespread praise for its compelling voice and authentic evocation of the west of Ireland. His second collection, Drifting Under the Moon, was published earlier this year and considerably advanced his reputation, the new poems revealing an increased awareness of craft, a broadening and deepening of his vision.

Damien Drohan is a Limerick man who came to Galway and stayed for the weather. He is now a student teacher, so please excuse him if he dives for cover at any loud noises. He once tried to write a book about procrastination, but never got around to it. Damien mostly writes short fiction, but will write a poem if badgered enough. Most of his characters are a nastier version of himself, and say the things he would never say, at least in polite company. He has been a participant in creative writing classes at Galway Technical Institute and was longlisted in the 2010 Over The Edge New Writer of The Year competion.

Martin Dyar grew up in Swinford in County Mayo. He has worked as a special needs teacher, a teacher of creative writing, and as a lecturer in medical ethics. His poetry has been published widely in journals, including the John McGahern yearbook, the Oxford Magazine, Poetry Ireland Review, the Stinging Fly, and Ropes. His writing has received a number of awards, including the Patrick Kavanagh Award in 2009, and the Strokestown Poetry Award in 2001. This year he was selected for the Poetry Introductions Series. He is also the recipient of an Arts Council Bursary Award in Literature for 2010. Martin will also be performing his one man show Tom Loves a Lord, with soprano Anna-Louise Costello, at the Town Hall Theatre in Galway on October 29th.

There will be an open-mic when the Featured Readers have finished. This is open to anyone who has a poem or story to share. New readers are always especially welcome. The MC for the evening will be Susan Millar DuMars. For further details phone 087-6431748 or see our website http://overtheedgeliteraryevents.blogspot.com/

Over The Edge acknowledges the ongoing generous financial support of Galway City Council and The Arts Council.
