Seminar to be hosted by VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art and the George Bernard Shaw Theatre, Carlow, on Wednesday, November 3rd 2010. How have Ireland’s visual arts centres evolved over the last fifteen years? What ways should visual arts programming, for publics both national and international, be developed for the future? And what is the role of the curator within these institutions?
Within the remit of visual art, this day long discussion will consider developments and related challenges associated with curating visual art in Ireland’s public and private art centres. With over seventy funded, whether privately or publicly, visual arts facilities in the country, this address hopes to position the recent development and expansion of the sector in relation to some of the key debates that surround the programming of visual art and the audiences it hopes for, whoever they might be. With these questions and issues in mind this seminar seeks to establish the need for the sector and its facilitators to engage in a discussion on the position of Ireland’s visual art centres within contemporary curatorial practices. It is also hoped that this event might consider the potential for a continued forum and research network, one which might; act as a support for those involved in the sector, promote new ideas, exchange expertise and keep its members up to date on what’s going on nationally and internationally.
This daylong seminar will take place at Visual Centre for Contemporary Art and George Bernard Shaw Theatre. The day’s events coincide with the exhibition:Michael Warren, UNBROKEN LINE, New work and Retrospective.Performance artists Fergus Byrne and Ros Murray will be responding to this work as part of the seminars schedule.Tickets €20/€15 students inclusive of €10 charge for lunch by Lennons@ VISUAL, can be purchased through the box office at: boxoffice@visaulcarlow.ie or 059 9172400

Ireland’s National Choral Singing Week will take place during World Mental Health Week, from 3 – 10 October, 2010. This joint initiative of AOIC, Wexford County Council Arts Office and Mental Health Ireland was an enormous success in 2008 and 2009. The initiative was developed to show the positive benefits of choral singing to people's mental health and to encourage people to become involved. Choral singing gives the body a physical and mental boost, increasing blood flow, reducing isolation, lessening stress! We hope that we will have even more choirs, schools and groups involved in the National Choral Singing Week, 2010, so start planning your event now. Events can include joint choral performances; workshops in workplaces; open rehearsals; performances in the street, in shopping centres, in hospitals and day care units, and even a live juke box!

Turn-berlin is an artist funded space, with a large gallery in the middle of the biggest concentration of art in Europe. We are working to find the most effective ways of progressing an artists name and reputation. By introducing a more integrated approach we can be more effective and develop wider opportunities. The intense experience of showing work in a gallery is the best way to have work seen. To get the most from exhibiting which can be a relatively short event, to include it as part of a comprehensive package gives more considered exposure. Developing a name is the only way forward, it takes time and a lot of determination. This is why many artists are finding new ways of being seen. If you don’t exhibit you are only doing half of the job, but taking a positive approach to exhibiting should include other forms. We are now big enough to be a representational gallery offering a full promotional package. More information on turn-berlin’s long term approach to developing artists is on the following link: http://turn-berlin.de/application/index.htmlAddress: turn-berlin Gallery, Josetti Höfe, Rungestr 22-24, 10179 Berlin, Germany. A new publication from Create and the Arts Council highlights the exciting practice of artists working with diverse communities.
In the publication, Artist in the Community Scheme: Four Essays, artists - Rhona Byrne, Susan Gogan, Declan Gorman and Ríonach Ní Néill, describe their collaboration with communities of interest and place, and document the work produced through the Artist in the Community Scheme, which Create manages on behalf of the Arts Council.
The book shows how the Scheme has become a key mechanism through which collaborative arts is now understood as a vibrant and dynamic contemporary art practice.

This is an important piece of research, commissioned by the National Youth Council of Ireland’s Arts Programme. Through a specific sample group and through focused questions, Anna Fiona Keogh (researcher) has tried to follow the sometimes faint, often mercurial line of young people’s engagement with an art form. We have tried to ascertain (in as much as we can ever quantify these things) what is unique and special about youth arts, what exactly happens in the life of a young person when they engage with an art form and what begins to happen in their creative and imaginative processes. We don’t suggest that this research is exhaustive or conclusive, but it maps a patch of ground in the landscape.
The study involved conducting in-depth research with approximately 50 young people, between the ages of 10 and 18, involved in five youth arts projects or programmes. The projects were selected on a number of criteria including diverse art forms and geographical location. Also, we aimed for a sample which reflects the views of young people from different social backgrounds.

Visual Artists Ireland (VAI) has launched a new social networking site for the visual arts – www.thecommonroom.net. Visual Artists Ireland has been helping professional visual artists since 1980 with an ever widening group of services. Following discussion and research, VAI wished to supply a further level of public service to the visual arts. Noting the benefits of social networking sites for increasing a person's circle of contacts and connecting users to familiar and new people through mutual acquaintances and common interests, VAI created The Common Room Social Network for the Visual Arts. With forums, blogs, image & video galleries, special interest group creation, and links to other networking sites such as Twitter, thecommonroom.net provides a convenient one stop area for people working in the visual arts to keep in contact, as well as providing a free platform for presentation, discussion and group support.
Cultural contact points have been established in the Member States and in most of the other countries taking part in the programme. They are responsible for promoting the programme, facilitating the participation of as many cultural professionals as possible, ensuring an exchange of information with national cultural institutions, maintaining contact between the participants in the various Community programmes and a link with the other sources of information on the various Community programmes. CCP Ireland has just updated it's website - see more at http://ccp.ie
The first ever set of FREE guidelines to help artists and commissioners embrace the sustainable as well as the artistic impact of their work has been launched by Chrysalis Arts , a public art, training and development agency based in rural North Yorkshire. Public Art Sustainability Assessment (PASA for short) is a free interactive assessment tool available from which aims to promote sustainable practice in public art to artists and commissioners and has been developed to assist Chrysalis Arts in the process of analysing and evaluating projects that they are involved in. Kate Maddison, Director at Chrysalis Arts comments:” “ When we set out to discover how to address sustainability within our public art practice, we were dismayed to find so little information to guide us. This prompted us to take the first step and start the process of establishing our own method of working sustainably. What we found interested us greatly because it threw the spot-light on issues that are relevant to others involved in commissioning and creating public art and beyond that to the way society values sustainability.” “ Art has an ability to reflect and potentially influence our behaviour and public art is by its nature in the public eye. Chrysalis Arts believes it has a role to play in promoting responsible behaviour in this context. It soon became clear that we needed to disseminate this information widely, as the issues need to be dealt with by everyone involved in the process of planning, commissioning and implementing public art.” The online interactive checklist is easy to use and covers the key issues which surround sustainable practice in public art.
This checklist is supported by full guidelines and useful case studies. To use the free PASA checklist and download the guidelines please visit and register at www.pasaguidelines.org .
Registered users can answer questions about their art activity or project online and when the checklist is completed, they can download their answers as a pdf document. PASA has been created for artists and creative practitioners as well as public art organisations, local authorities, developers, commissioners, funders, architects, landscape architects, engineers, contractors, communities, schools and anyone else who may be involved in the commissioning, development, creation, maintenance and decommissioning of public art at different scales and in different contexts.
Chrysalis Arts have developed PASA in consultation with a wide range of partners – including artists and arts organisations, local authority officers, specialists from higher education establishments and environmental consultants Gaia Research, as well as looking to government sources and other creative practitioners such as architects for guidance on sustainable principles and practice. “While artistic considerations should be foremost in creating public art, there is no reason why artists cannot embrace sustainable principles in the way in which they conceive and implement their ideas, as long as this is supported through the funding and commissioning process… “Kate Maddison. Chrysalis Arts view PASA as very much the starting point in the debate around public art practice and sustainability, and hope that by throwing the debate open to others, the result in the long term will be a more sustainable way of working. The Arts Council requests expressions of interest from organisations with significant Arts and Health expertise that are interested in developing and maintaining an independent national Arts and Health website, and embedding the long-term development of the website into the ongoing work of their organisation.
It is envisaged that a national Arts and Health website would be a resource and a focal point for the sector, providing information, support, advice and news, and generating discussion between artists, arts organisations, health service users, carers, healthcare professionals and others interested in the area of Arts and Health in Ireland.
The budget for the design, build, ongoing maintainence, development and promotion of the website is in the region of €40,000, to be paid over the period 2010 / 2011.
Deadline: 5pm, Tuesday, 19 October 2010

The devastating effects of this recession on all aspects of Irish society need no introduction. However, tough as times undoubtedly are, there are still a number of practical steps that all non-profit organisations can introduce to alleviate the strain on operations.
Practical Steps for Cutting Costs:
Staffing costs - while staff working in non-profit organisations are not usually highly paid in general, staff costs tend to be our largest expense. If times are really hard and you are considering having to consider redundancies, perhaps you could consider some alternative ways of reducing staff costs e.g. pay cuts (heavier at the top than at the bottom, and voluntary), short term working, shorter hours etc.
Fundraising costs – can they be reduced or should they be increased to do more of what you are doing at present or something different to bring in more funds? Do you always do the same things? Is your message dated?
Service providers - your costs with various service providers (e.g. utility companies etc) may be limited, but there still may be some worthwhile savings to be obtained by reviewing offerings for utilities and rent, bank charges etc.
Mergers - could you merge your organisation with another and save funds? If so, this may be an excellent route, but it is a longer term option, not a short-term fix.
Back-office services - a less ambitious target and one which might be a stepping stone to longer term merger would be to merge back-office services – accounting/admin support etc.

This article comprises edited highlights of a full article which can be read at http://www.wheel.ie/funding/fundraising-guide/cost-cutting-and-making-ends-meet.In 1985 the first County Arts Officer was appointed to Clare County Council. This marked the beginning of a new relationship between the Arts Council and local authorities in promoting and developing the arts at local level. To mark this 25 year partnership, and under the auspices of our relationship with the County and City Managers Association, the Arts Council and the Association of Local Authority Arts Officers are together organising a conference on local arts development.
This will take place at the new Irish World Academy at the University of Limerick on 25-26 November. The conference will explore the role of the arts and culture in achieving local economic and social development objectives, and ask how we can unlock the potential of future integrated planning in these areas. Chaired by Olivia O’Leary, senior contributors from Ireland, the UK and Australia will present papers.
The conference is aimed at key policy makers such as City and County Managers, senior local authority and enterprise officials as well as local public representatives and providers in the arts and cultural field. Incorporating a live recording of RTE’s Sunday Miscellany, the conference will also offer an opportunity to celebrate what has been achieved over the past 25 years of local arts development.
