Burn the Bad Lamp

An aging owner of an antique shop sits astride the tumble down remains of a life's work… Into this "rag and bone shop of the heart", a lamp, a genie and a shaft of magic appear, and a fairy tale for adults is spun. Burn the Bad Lamp is an adaptation of a short story by Kevin Barry from his award-winning collection There Are Little Kingdoms. It tells of a day in the life of Ralph Coughlan, a downtrodden and nervous man, and of the paths that open up for him when an unexpected visitor explodes into his antique shop. Directed by and featuring Rod Goodall, founder member of the legendary Footsbarn Theatre Company, together with a range of puppet characters played by Aine Ní Dhroighneáin, this unique and magical production brings a strange and wondrous world to life.

Who does an agony aunt turn to for advice?

Dear Frankie is the story of Frankie Byrne, Ireland’s iconic agony aunt. For over twenty years Ireland tuned in as Frankie solved the problems of a nation at lunchtime on Radio Éireann. Lovelorn teenagers, jealous husbands, concerned mammies, all wrote in looking for an answer to their problems. This by turns, hilarious and poignant play, tracks the life of this glamorous, successful and popular Irish figure as she considers the burning social issues of the time - all the while, concealing deep sorrows in her own life. The Adventures of the Wet Señor

The Adventures of the Wet Señor is an intoxicating fusion of physical theatre, dance, film and live music. The high calibre, bilingual production is a new work by Donal O’Kelly, which features specially composed live music by Kíla - a world renowned traditional band who have played with U2, Sinéad O’Connor, The Corrs and Keith Richard, to name a few! Áras Inis Gluaire is delighted to welcome the cast and crew of this unusual show to Belmullet on Saturday, October 16.

After a terrible storm in 1588, Captain Francisco De Cuellar of the Spanish Armada was washed ashore on Streedagh beach in Sligo. His subsequent trials and adventures are the stuff of legends. During De Cuellar’s odyssey from Ben Bulben to the Giant’s Causeway, he experienced the extremes of hostility and hospitality, but he never wavered from his mission to get home - despite enduring theft, injury, bounty hunters and enslavement by a mountain blacksmith!

With live music, stunning visuals and a text in four languages (English, Irish, Spanish and Latin), this exciting production tells the true story of Captain Francisco De Cuellar. It is a wonderful piece of theatre which will appeal to people of all ages. Of all the languages employed in telling the story, the focus will be on the language of music and the visual – making it accessible to everyone.

The Adventures of the Wet Señor features: Sorcha Fox (Ros na Rún), Jaimie Carswell, Carrie Crowley (former Eurovision presenter) and, of course, the musicians of Kíla - Dee Armstrong, Rossa O’Snodaigh, Colm O’Snodaigh, Ronán O’Snodaigh.

There is a ball at Tamworth Castle tonight. England is saluting an Irishman. But the guest of honour is out of sorts.

Follow an ageing Tom Moore as he and his shadowy biographer dig through the years, separating the stories that soothe from stories that inflame. See them tackle the ghost of Moore’s mollycoddling mother while gazing into the jaws of the celebrity life. Follow them to Tamworth Castle, and the toast to end all toasts, before they turn on each other.

Tom Loves a Lord is a gripping and hilarious play written and performed by the 2009 Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award winner Martin Dyar. A treat for lovers of theatre and music, and a timely celebration of an enduring Irish icon, the play includes selections from Moore’s Melodies sung by the renowned soprano Anna-Louise Costello, with pianist Aileen Cahill.
