Still Walking (Aruitemo aruitemo) Tuesday 14th September @ 8.00pm

Japan  2008  114 mins  Language: Japanese with English subtitles

A tender and gentle drama that centres on a lower middle class Yokahama family, on the day they come together to observe the anniversary of a loss in the family. A grown-up son and daughter return for a rare family reunion, bringing their own families with them, gathering to commemorate the tragic death of the eldest son, who drowned in an accident fifteen years previously. Grief provides a quiet backdrop in this subtle, entrancing and beautifully observed exploration of what makes modern families tick, by director Hirokazu Koreeda.

 Adm.: €5

“A nuanced balance of gentle humour and wistful sorrow.” - Corona Cork Film Festival 2009

“If anyone can be considered an heir of the great Yasujiro Ozu, it might be Hirokazu Koreeda.” - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Lourdes Tuesday 28th September @ 8.00pm.  Austria/France  2009  96 mins  Language: French with English subtitles

Jessica Hausner (a former pupil of Michael Haneke) directs an ensemble piece about the role of miracles in the modern world. The film focuses on the experiences of Christine (a superb performance by Sylvie Testud), a young woman living with multiple sclerosis who, while her attitude to religious belief is unclear, looks to the divine in the hope of physical improvement. Beautifully photographed and set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most famous sites of religious pilgrimage, low-key performances and a deadpan streak of humour steer away from oversentimental or pious overtones, while posing provocative questions about the value of religion to those in need.  Adm.: €5

“This quiet, witty, observant film encompasses hope, faith, death and doubt. A gem.” - Philip French, The Observer     “A provocative and surprising pleasure.” - Dave Calhoun, Time Out London                                                                         “As bewitchingly ambiguous as it is beautifully shot.” - RottenTomatoes
