Oíche Chultúr Mhaigh Eo 2011 - Mayo Culture Night 2011

Culture Night – What will you see in Mayo on Sept 23rd?

It’s that time of year again; when Cultural organisations and groups are busily preparing to throw open their door to audiences who eagerly anticipate the delights that await on September 23rd.  The event in Mayo began in 2009 and Mayo was the first county-wide Culture Night.   Since then the number of participants has steadily grown and this year 25 cultural hotspots will be sharing and showcasing a wide variety of Cultural events on the 23rd September.

In the past five years Culture Night has become a national phenomenon.  The evening provides an opportunity for audiences, cultural organisations and groups alike to showcase and experience local culture while also being part of a national event.  Feedback from the evening has been incredibly positive.

Friday September 23rd is Culture Night 2011, and the main focus of the evening will be on access, and participating venues will extend opening hours, organise events which are free of charge and open to the public.

This year Mayo is hoping to build on the success of last year’s event with an increase in the number of cultural organisations.  Busily finalising their programmes of activity for the night are Scoil Acla in Achill, Comhar Dún Chaocháin and Áras Inis Gluaire in Erris, Ballina Arts Centre, Ballina Library and the Jackie Clarke Collection in Ballina, Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ballycastle, Custom House Studios and BLINK Visual Arts Trail (10 visual art venues) in Westport, Linenhall Arts Centre and Artsquad in Castlebar, Claremorris CCÉ and Claremorris Open Exhibition, and the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life in Turlough, Charlestown Arts Centre & the Nephin Blacksmith Revival Group in Lahardane.

Planned activities range from family workshops to films to exhibitions to performances, to craft displays, to music seisiúns and much, much more!  With almost 70 free events taking place throughout the county and catering for all ages, there is bound to be something for everyone!

This event provides cultural organisations with an occasion to showcase to local, and not so local communities, the wealth and variety of cultural activity that exists in the county, while also promoting Mayo’s contribution to the arts on a national level.  Mayo County Council Arts Office will be working in partnership with the local venues, Templebar Cultural Trust and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to bring the Culture Night initiative to Mayo.  Mid-west Radion will again be media sponsor for the Culture Night event in Mayo and eager audiences should tune into our local radio-station for further information in the weeks leading up to September 23rd.

More details on Mayo Culture Night will be available over the coming weeks and a programme of events will be available from the Arts Office early in August.  Please contact Mayo Arts Office on 094-9024444 Ext 7558 & 7560 or by email
