The Horse Show: Group Show

Presented in association with theRoyalHibernianAcademy

Ballina Civic Offices,Arran Place, Ballina

Art History is full of horses. From Renaissance paintings, such as Uccello's famous battle and hunting scenes, to the work of Stubbs and Munnings, horses represent power, magnificence and glory. Although much studied and painted, the dynamics of the horse remained a mystery, people took bets on whether all four hooves left the ground when a horse was galloping - a question that wasn't settled until 1872, when Muybridge's famous photographs appeared.

Cars have replaced horses, and once central to our lives, horses are now confined to leisure and pleasure, but what do contemporary artists make of the horse? Many say horses are one of the most difficult of subjects, because it is so easy to over-sentimentalise, although in this exhibition, which features Irish and international artists including Peter Curling, Basil Blackshaw, Max Streicher, Katherine Beug, Nick Miller, Nevan Lahart, Perry Ogden and Tim Flach, the results are anything but sentimental. Wild, wonderful, intoxicating and intriguing, The Horse Show rediscovers our passion for this astonishing animal.

Curated by Patrick T Murphy (Director RHA) and Gemma Tipton.

Admission free. All welcome. Exhibition runs until 16th December.

Please note: this exhibition is taking place in the Ballina Civic Office onArran Place.

Anna Spearman

Anna Spearman describes her approach to making art, as being as open as she can, to welcome the sense of not knowing, of not always being in control, and the possibility of being surprised.

In a recent review by Ben Hellawell - Anna Spearman’s work has being described as monuments, with an anatomical feel.  The components of Spearman’s work give the perception that the materials are more significant than they actually are.  Spearman uses this quality throughout the works on show to let your imagination examine them for what they are, or indeed what they are not.

The colours in the materials fool you into presuming the pieces are a simple assemblage of three or four elements, but upon further inspection, it is all a façade. A few second’s glance is all it takes for the mask of something familiar and ordinary to be lifted, revealing something interesting and unnamed.

There is an intrinsic worth to Spearman’s work.  She is modest in her workings. She manipulates her materials simply but effectively to let us explore things for what they could be, letting us bring our baggage to the work to further evoke possibilities, rather than leaving it at the door to tell us what it means. Her work is not riddled with statements of political values; there is no underlying message of animosity. These works are unrestricted and undetermined, but they are peaceful and a welcome relief to flex our imaginations.

Exhibition continues every day until 11th December
