Off Season – Niall Kerrigan

Throughout the month of February Ballina Arts Centre will present Off Season, an exhibition of work by Niall Kerrigan.

Reminiscent of the ‘Famine Villages’, the concept of Off Season comes from the months when holidays towns and villages are unoccupied waiting for the life to be breathed into them again. Shops in small, seaside towns waiting for the tourist business to return; colourful playgrounds and amusement parks sitting empty.

These locations portray the loneliness and emptiness of place without people. Off Season takes as its subject a more contemporary version of this loneliness; one created by a more affluent society. Despite this, there is loneliness in these villages and towns during the ‘off season’ period.

Niall Kerrigan is an artists and award-winning graphic designer, originally from Dublin, now living in Killala, Co. Mayo. Since moving to Mayo, he has documented the area he lives and works in, through the medium of photography, which includes his first major body of work Derelict: Silent & Still, an exhibition inspired by what he terms “the architecture of abandonment”.

Off Season will be officially opened by Aidan Dunne, Art Critic, the Irish Times, on Thursday 10th February at 8pm, and runs until 5th March. Admission is free and all are welcome.

A Different View

A collection of colourful landscape photographs depicting the beauty of Mayo, taken by residents of the O’Dwyer Cheshire Home, Lismirrane, Co. Mayo. Under the guidance of professional photographer Glenda Colquhoun, the residents were able to discover and explore the potential and uses of digital photography as an activity, an interest, an art form and means of communication. A Different View clearly demonstrates the potential of photography to empower and liberate, but emphasises that it is not the camera but who is behind the camera that is important.

Zita Reihill - Poetic Space

An exhibition of recent oil paintings by Dublin-based artist Zita Reihill that find their inspiration in poetry. “The basis of this work is poetry, it is about the depths that poetry takes you. A poet’s word strikes true, it moves the very depths of pure being. So, this body of work is about finding that voice, a voice so remote within us, that it is the voice we hear when we listen as far back as memory reaches, the very limits of memory, even beyond memory perhaps.” Zita has been exhibiting regularly in Dublin for the past 15 years, and has also been involved in shows in London, New York, Venice and Melbourne. Her work is represented in many prestigious collections.

The Legend of the Ruhr – European Capital of Culture 2010 “Essen for the Ruhr”

Mayo County Library presents the exhibition The Legend of the Ruhr – European Capital of Culture 2010 “Essen for the Ruhr” with Photos of the Ruhr Metropolis by Manfred Vollmer.

“Essen for the Ruhr” has been designated the European Capital of Culture in 2010. In this exhibition, comprising more than 20 of Manfred Vollmer’s photographs, you will get to know a little about the Ruhr Metropolis. This is an urbane cityscape marked by its history in the mining and steel industries. It is an area that continuously reinvents itself. It is unfinished, inspiring and surprising. It is a metropolis in the making. The European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 is the engine powering this development. Germany, which celebrated 20 years of German Unity last year, has a tradition of excellent relations with Ireland. In 1990, during its European Council Presidency, Ireland positioned itself in favour of the upcoming German unification and played a crucial role when it came to define the parameters of integrating the whole of Germany into the European Communities. Today, both countries are jointly engaged at the core of European affairs as well as in the United Nations. Most recently, the visit to Ireland by the German foreign minister, Dr. Guido Westerwelle in September 2010 underlined the close and trustful relations between the two countries. Ireland has particularly strong ties with Germany in the economic sphere, as Germany is the country's most important trading partner after the United Kingdom.

Castlebar itself has strong ties with Germany being twinned with the German town of Höchstadt. The Legend of the Ruhr – European Capital of Culture 2010 “Essen for the Ruhr” will be launched in Castlebar Library on Tuesday 1st February at 6:00 pm and will run until February 12th.All are welcome.

Ballycroy Photo Group Exhibition

An exhibition of photographs, titled Scene Through a Lens, by the Ballycroy Photography Group will be launched at 8pm on Thursday, 27th January. The Ballycroy Photography Group evolved from a project started by Ballycroy Community Futures in 2008. The project was funded through Inspiration Station and facilitated by Stephanie Troy.  It involved amateur photographers taking pictures of their local people and landscape. They worked under the guidance of professional photographer, Steven Doyle. It culminated in a 200 page book published in October 2009 titled Ballycroy – Images of People and Places. In August 2010 they exhibited some of their personal favourite pictures in Ballycroy Community Centre during the community festival. This exhibition was well received by all. Since then, they have produced a calendar for 2011, featuring pictures of Ballycroy and includes the oldest Ballycroy man, Mr. John Cleary, aged 101 years. They hope to continue their success with another community based project in 2011. All are welcome to the launch in Áras Inis Gluaire. Admission free. The exhibition will run until the end of February.
