Writing Short Radio Drama.

Night Classes, Castlebar.

Mondays, September 2013 – December 2013

A series of twelve two-hour workshops dealing with all aspects of writing short radio plays - typically fifteen minutes long. The workshops will deal with radio drama from concept through to broadcast, including character and story development, writing, editing and re-editing. The workshops will focus on the unique challenges and opportunities presented by radio and at the end of the course, participants should have written a number of short radio plays.

When the course is completed, it is hoped to work with local radio stations to record and broadcast some/most of them. Ideally, students should have some previous writing experience.

This is an exciting opportunity for writers to see their ideas develop into the finished product of a recorded radio play.

The tutor is John Corless who has facilitated many creative writing courses in GMIT and elsewhere, for the past number of years. He is co-writer, with Liam Horan, of ‘The Pull’ a comedy play which is currently touring nationwide with HalfSolid Productions, in which John plays three characters. He plays a central role in the comedy ‘Con Concannon – Emerging Manager’ on RTE Radio One’s Sunday Sport Show. His debut poetry collection ‘Are you ready?’ was published by Salmon in 2009. His short plays include, comedies ‘The Interview,’ ‘Invitation To Dance’ and ‘Special Training.’ He has an MA in Creative Writing and is currently working on a PhD.

The course will run in Monday nights in Castlebar, from 7-9pm with the exception of Bank Holidays when it will run on either Wednesday or Thursday nights depending on room availability. Fee is €150. (Booking is essential as places are limited and booking deposits are required.) Bookings and enquiries to John Corless by E-Mail: john@johncorless.net

STAGECOACH THEATRE ARTS, THE WORLD'S LARGEST PART TIME CHILDREN'S THEATRE SCHOOL OPENS IN WESTPORT THIS AUTUMN.

In line with 25th anniversary celebrations as the world's largest part time theatre school network, Stagecoach have announced that a newCountyMayocentre will open at Sacred Heart School,Westport in September.

Stagecoach Mayo will offer children and teenagers quality classes each Saturday morning in dance, drama and singing and the school will be run by Eliz Lucey, currently assistant principal at Stagecoach Galway.

Originally from Longford, Eliz said "It's always been an ambition to run my own theatre school, having been involved with Stagecoach through my husband, John and my 10 year old son, Alex who has attended the Galway school for five years"she explained"We looked at some super venues in Castlebar, but the wonderful facilities at Sacred Heart in Westport,  support of principal Anne Murphy and the school board ticked all the boxes so we officially open on Saturday 21st September!"she continued"We feel priviledged and excited to give children in Mayo the chance to experience what Stagecoach is all about and we will offer a professional, caring but fun environment each Saturday"

Stagecoach Theatre Arts was first established in 1988 and there are now over 600 schools around the world. It is complementary to, yet independent of normal academic study but trains children in all three disciplines under one roof. Classes are taught by experienced professionals, many of which are former actors, choreographers and singers from a musical theatre or academic teaching background.

Classes are rotated and divided by age and stage so 7 to 16 year olds theatre train for three hours each Saturday morning between 10am and 1pm, while 4 to 6 year olds, (Early Stages) have 30 minutes each of dance, drama and singing. It has led the way in theUKandIrelandfor quality professional teaching standards for arts education, exams, written reports for parents and child protection policies and procedures.
