Culture Night 2013 –free cultural events!

Culture Night 2013 will take place on September 20th 2013 and plans are afoot to make the night an unforgettable cultural experience for Mayo audiences.  Cultural organisations and groups are busily preparing varied programmes of activity for the evening.  Mayo has been participating since 2009 and since then the number of participants has steadily grown and this year close on 30 groups and venues will be sharing and showcasing a wide variety of cultural events on the night.

The ethos of the national event is access to free cultural events for all, and participating venues nationwide will extend opening hours, organise events which are free of charge and open to the public.  The evening provides an opportunity for audiences, cultural organisations and groups alike to showcase and experience local culture.

The event in Mayo has been extremely well received both by participating venues and audiences.  This year Mayo is hoping to build on the success of last year’s event with an increase in the number of cultural organisations and by continuing to provide an evening of interesting events for Mayo people to attend and enjoy.  Regardless of where you are in the county there will be a Culture Night event taking place nearby with events this year planned for Erris, Achill, Ballina, Ballycastle, Laherdane, Claremorris, Castlebar, Ballinrobe, Tourmakeady, Westport, Newport, Charlestown, Turlough & The Great Western Greenway.

Imagination and creativity are abundantly apparent in the excellent programmes that have made past Culture Nights extremely successful and 2013 will not disappoint.  Planned activities range from family workshops to films to exhibitions to performances, to craft displays, to music seisiúns and much, much more!  With free events taking place throughout the county and catering for all ages, there is bound to be something for everyone!

This event provides cultural organisations with an occasion to showcase to local communities and visitors, the wealth and variety of cultural activity that exists in Mayo, while also celebrating the county’s excellent cultural reputation on a national platform.  Mayo County Council Arts Office will be working in partnership with the local venues, Templebar Cultural Trust and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to bring the Culture Night initiative to Mayo.

More details on Mayo Culture Night will be available over the coming weeks and a programme of events will be available from the Arts Office early in August.  For further information please contact Ann Marie McGing at Mayo Arts Office on 094- 904 7558 or by email
