On Leaving Project:

This project is a comprehensive and ongoing photographic study of the lives of a particular set of migrants from Ireland with an eye to what they have left behind. It is a three stranded project which has its roots in a three year long documentation of the renewed trend of emigration from Ireland or more specifically from David’s town in Ireland, the city of Dublin. Leaving Dublin became a series of 84 studies of people on the move which employed a very tight visual strategy. Low light cityscapes carefully lit, traditional poses, with a suitcase as the only prop and the sitter in most cases looking away from us into the future.

As Ireland was in the International news a lot when this project started the work was discovered and used as a metaphor for our times by several international news agencies. The Wall Street Journal online, the New York Times, C.B.S. news in the U.S.A., France 24, dutch national T.V., the Age(Melbourne)and der Standaart in Brussels to name a few agencies that shone a light on the work before it had even got to exhibition. By March 2012 over 70 Images were made and a simultaneous projection in the towns and cities where the sitters now lived was set up. To that end projections were organized in 14 international locations 2 of them being in The U.S.A. see here for details http://www.davidmonahan.eu/untitled/leaving-dublin-projections.

The printed work premiered in July 2012 in Dublin on the main program of the Photoireland Festival from there it transferred to the Immigration museum in Melbourne. Where it was on exhibit to an audience of 114,000 over a 10 month period. During the process of the series David  arranged to visit some of the closer emigrants in London and took their portraits.  A second series was thus born “a survey for the departed” and endeavours to show the melancholic beauty of the places left behind and the look that would prevail if everyone was to leave. When David visited the sitters he shot a roll of film loosely, up close with a wide angle, as they were talking and the last leg of the project came to life as the visitation series. These two legs of the project are still in progress  and David plans to visit North and South America in the coming year. To date he has made work in Dublin(returnees) The U.K., France, Australia, New Zealand.  David’s work can be viewed on his website: http://www.davidmonahan.eu/.

Useful Information - Context

Community Arts (Working in Context) in Ireland are now a well established and growing aspect of Irish cultural life that reflects an increasing concern for inclusively and wider public access to the arts.  Community Arts historically has seen artists working directly with communities and has developed through the artistic practice of some artists who are concerned with Place, People, Site or dialogue with a community.   Community Arts also can be referred to as ‘socially engaged arts practice’, ‘dialogical art’, ‘situation art’, ‘community-based art’, ‘art in context’ ‘site specificity’ and has evolved in Ireland through quality and excellence in a pioneering way.  The Arts are a powerful tool and help to build communities.

Carlow Local Authorities - Arts Service has a track record and has championed a way of working alongside artists who work in this context,  through programme initiatives such as the Visualise Carlow programme that commissioned temporary site specific projects in the county leading up to the opening of VISUAL, Centre for Contemporary art Carlow, as well as unique commissions under the per cent for art scheme such as ‘Shelter me from the Rain’ an opera for Carlow by Fergus Sheil – the first commissioned opera in Ireland, Panchaea – In search of an equal utopia and a willing suspension of disbelief Curated by Denis Roche with Brian Maguire and Emma Finucane and more recently through supporting the Artist in Residence programme in partnership with VISUAL Centre for contemporary art and GBShaw Theatre Carlow with dance artist Emma Martin and theatre residence WillFredd, as well as supporting quality initiatives such as County Carlow Youth Theatre and Aspiro – formally Carlow Young Artists Choir.

An Béal Binn – Erris Festival of Words June 6-8th 2014

Áras Inis Gluaire, the Arts Centre for Erris, is initiating an exciting new festival of literature in 2014. Whither a new literary festival you say? Well this will follow the great tradition of Force 12, which had a national reputation as being informal and friendly, whilst being challenging and relevant and the setting is in Belmullet in the beautiful barony of Erris, North West Mayo, an area rich in history and oral tradition.

Honing in on the zeitgeist of remembrance, reflection & reconciliation, we are taking a theme of Culture & Commemoration, as we present lectures, readings, workshops and debate from the esteemed likes of John Banville, Donal Ryan, Eimear O’Connor, Míceál Ó Conaola, Michael Harding, Tommy Tiernan, John Waters, Rosita Boland, Carol Hunt of the Sunday Independentand twice recipient of Foreign Reporter of the Year, Ed Vulliamy of the Guardian.

Music & song will be to the fore also as we present ballads of some literary giants, like Yeats & Kavanagh, as well as commemorating the anniversaries of Brendan Behan and of the publication of James Joyce’s Dubliners with a production of the highly acclaimed Dubliners Dilemma by Declan Gorman.

We are also giving voice to the cream of Mayo talent, with Mike McCormack, Colette NicAodh, Martin Dyar and Terry McDonagh participating. Set as it is in the Mayo Gaeltacht, we are also delighted to welcome Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh, Seán Ó Coisdealbha  and Aifric MacAodha. Meanwhile Creative Writing groups from Mayo, Galway and Dublin will offer a selection of their work.

Writing development is an important aspect of An Béal Binn with workshops throughout the weekend on poetry, biography and literary criticism amongst others. There will also be outreach programmes for local schools.

GARDEN SCULPTURE WORKSHOP

April 25, 26 and 27, 2014

Áras Éanna, Arts and Heritage Centre, Inis Oírr, The Aran Islands

Award-winning sculptor and author DJ Garrity will be conducting a three-day garden sculpture workshop at Áras Éanna. The artist who lives in the West of Ireland is the former Sculptor-In-Residence of The Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Garrity developed the hands-on workshop at Mount Rushmore as an interpretive training program in collaboration with the National Park Service of America and subsequently conducts the workshop at botanic gardens, museums and art associations in America and Europe.

Based on his book The Rhythms Of Stone, the artist leads individuals with no previous experience in a light carving process that finesses the human face from a rough block of stone. The participants use simple hand tools to create unique sculpture for the home, garden or gallery and the workshop has been well received by garden societies, artists and the lifelong learning community. The program typically fills to capacity with many participants enjoying the experience from year to year at long-standing venues such as The Chicago Botanical Garden where the workshop will be offered in 2014 for the seventh year.

Áras Éanna is a multifaceted Arts and Heritage Centre housed in a renovated weaving factory at Inis Oírr Island in the Aran Islands. Since its foundation in the year 2000, Áras Éanna has played host to some of Ireland’s leading visual and conceptual artists, musicians, performers and actors.

The workshop fee is €200 and includes all materials and use of hand tools for the workshop. Reservations are advised. For more information concerning the artist visit www.djgarrity.com and to book a workshop reservation contact:

The moth short story prize is bigger and better

The Moth Short Story Prize is sponsored by the arts & literature magazine The Moth, recently described by the novelist David Mitchell as ‘a beautiful creature’.

The competition has become a fixture on the international writing calendar, and this year the first and second prizes have increased to €3,000 ($4,186) and €1,000 ($1,395). There is also a very attractive third prize of a week-long writing retreat at Circle of Misse in France. The Circle of Misse house rests on the banks of the Thouet River (‘thouet’ being the ancient Gallic word for ‘tranquil’), a tributary of the Loire. Circle of Misse will also kindly pay €250 ($348) towards travel expenses.

This year’s competition will be judged by Mike McCormack, a recipient of the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature whose debut short story collection was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. His novel Notes from a Coma was shortlisted for the Irish Book of the Year Award and was described in the Irish Times as ‘the greatest Irish novel of the decade just ended’.

‘The novel is open-hearted and generous, accommodating all sorts of foolishness and time-wasting, rather like life itself. The short story has no patience with that, it’s much more surgical, lending itself to a more difficult proposition that says: right son, you are on your own. The novel will tell you that being human you are among other people, whereas the short story seems to say, you are only fooling yourself. It measures itself out in a few thousand words for that very reason.’ Mike McCormack in an interview with The Spectato.

The prize is open to everyone, as long as the work is original and previously unpublished. There is a 6,000 word limit. The entry fee is €9 ($12.50) and you can enter as many stories as you like.

The closing date for the competition is 30 June 2014.

The three winning stories will feature in the autumn 2014 issue of The Moth and the winners will be invited to read at a special event at the Winding Stair Bookshop in Dublin in September 2014.

For details of how to enter the competition go to www.themothmagazine.com , email enquiries@themothmagazine.com or call 00 353 49 4362677.

The Room, Launch, Mayo

Date: 12 May 2014

Venue: Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar

Time:  6pm

The Waterford Healing Arts Trust (WHAT), a national support agency for arts and health, will launch a documentary film The Room in Castlebar  by award-winning documentary maker Róisín Loughrey which was made possible by a unique bursary from WHAT.

In 2013, artist Tom Meskell and Róisín Loughrey were jointly awarded an inaugural bursary from WHAT via artsandhealth.ie, the national arts and health website, to document through film an arts programme involving people who have an acquired brain injury, which is facilitated by Tom at Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar,  Co. Mayo. The completed documentary entitled 'The Room' will be launched in  at on Monday, 12th May 2014.

artsandhealth.ie is the national website providing a focal point and resource for the field of arts and health in Ireland which is managed by Ireland's leading arts and health programme, the Waterford Healing Arts Trust (WHAT) based in Waterford Regional Hospital.

In the words of artist Tom Meskell , ''The Room' sets out to explore the small moments of magic that happen in the course of an arts programme  of this nature, moments that allow for growth for both participants and the artist.  Using a fly-on-the-wall approach, this film is a powerful and  moving portrayal of the creative experience of long-stay hospital residents who have an acquired brain injury as a result of stroke, accident or conditions such as dementia or Alzheimer's and reveals the profound impact of the arts programme on their lives.'

WHAT via artsandhealth.ie is making a second bursary available in 2014 which is funded by the Arts Council and the Cork Arts and Health Programme, HSE South.

 See http://www.artsandhealth.ie/2014/03/21/call-for-applications-artsandhealth-ie-documentation-bursary/ for details.

The launch of the documentary film (11mins) will be followed by a post show discussion with Tom Meskell and Róisín Loughrey chaired by Claire Meaney of the Waterford Healing Arts Trust.

This event is free to attend.

The Room will be available to view on artsandhealth.ie following this event.
