Post Colony
A folk fiction about people and a plant set in KillarneyNational Park
May 28th - June 6th 2014
About
Post Colony is a project devised by artist Gareth Kennedy which will explore the natural, industrial, colonial and heritage histories of Killarney National Park, Co. Kerry. It will use the invasive species Rhododendron pontium as a medium in this process. First introduced to Ireland in the 1700’s this plant has become deeply problematic to the natural biodiversity within the national park.
Between May 28th and June 6th 2014, a community of interest will gather for 9-10 days for an immersive workshop at the isolated site of the Glena Cottage within the park. This Victorian Cottage is now derelict and overrun by groves of mature Rhododendron.
During the workshop participants will establish a green woodworking 'bodging' encampment for polelathing one legged stools made from rhododendron, used in traditional charcoal burning. The project will culminate in a vigil around a charcoal kiln for the production of charcoal from the troublesome plant.
Applications are encouraged from people with a background or specialist interest in contemporary art, design, craft, ecology, conservation and/or heritage. The participants will join a group of professionals including KillarneyNational Park staff, and craft specialists. Fifth generation woodsman and green woodworker Eoin Donnelly of Muintir Na Coille will lead the workshop.
This entire process will be filmed in 16mm.
The final film will be premiered at Muckross House as part of Kerry Film Festival and also as an exhibition at Siamsa Tire, The National Folk Theatre in Tralee.
Work Activities
Project participants will on May 28th and participants will be expected to commit to the full duration of the project, which will finish on June 6th. Project activities will include daily boat transfer to Glena cottage, instensive wood working processes, and long periods outdoors. Participants must be in good physical health. Professional guidance will lead us through the process.
Eating and Sleeping
Participants will live communally for the 10 days of the project at the park's self-catering hostel, Arthur Vincent House, where we will share daily meals. The hostel is situated on the beautiful MuckrossPeninsula, approximately five minutes walk from Muckross House itself, and fifteen minutes walk from the main Kenmare Road at the Muckross Park Hotel.
Cost
Participation in the project, food and accommodation is free of charge. Participants are required to cover the cost of their travel to and from Killarney and any costs for drink or personal food provision. Parking space is available at the Arthur Vincent Hostel if required.
Participants are required to commit to the full 10 day duration of the project. Part time participation is not feasible.

The Lime Tree Theatre/Limerick City and Council: Programme Funding – Call for Interest
The Lime Tree Theatre has been awarded funding from the Arts Council of €100,000 for the year April 1st 2014 to March 31st 2015. The award is for the programming of the performing and visual arts in Limerick city venues to support the making of work by local practitioners and towards developing a strategic approach to programming of venues. The funding is a continued partnership between the venue and LimerickCity and County Council to ensure a professional arts programme is presented in the city.
This will be, in effect, the continuation of the interim Limerick Arts Encounter, whereby a sum of €120,000 was spent on programming in the city over a period of six months from October 2013 to March 2014. The new amount represents a cut in funding to the city, but the Lime Tree and LimerickCity and County Council will endeavour to continue to present as full and high quality a programme as possible, augmented by the provision of new office facilities in 69 O’Connell Street.
As before, some of the work presented will be by touring companies in both the Lime Tree Theatre and the former Belltable, and some will be by Limerick based practitioners in the Lime Tree, the former Belltable or other venues in the city as preferred.
If you wish to be included in the programme, please fill out the Expression of Interest form and return to Louise Donlon at the Lime Tree Theatre or Sheila Deegan at LimerickCity and County Council with details of your proposal which should include:
Please bear in mind that there will be significant demand on relatively limited funds, so competition will be extremely high. Programming will be chosen based on Arts Council criteria – high quality work undertaken by full time, professional artists.
Expression of Interest Form - Expression_of_interest_Programming_funding
Expressions of interest should be made to Louise Donlon at the Lime Tree Theatre, MaryImmaculateCollege, Limerick.
Email: louise@limetreetheatre.ie. There is no specific deadline, but please bear in mind that once the limited funding available is allocated, there will be no further funds available.

Burren College of Art Alumni Exhibition | Call for Submissions
The Middle of Everywhere – BCA Alumni Exhibition 2014
The Burren College of Art will celebrate its 20th anniversary in July 2014. An alumni exhibition titled “The Middle of Everywhere “ is planned for our inaugural celebration weekend 18 – 20 July. This exhibition will showcase the work of BCA alumni whose work and lives have been influenced by their time in the Burren. The exhibition will be curated by Dr. Áine Phillips and plans are underway to exhibit this work subsequently in New York.
The curatorial theme will explore the relationship of place to space, especially in the unique location of BCA. Place can be defined as an open articulation of connections, a site in the flow of human relations that can offer a space for culture and society to generate itself. The place that BCA occupies is on a shoreline between Ireland and the US, between contemporary art and local culture and it defines a space of interconnection that is also ‘placeless’ . As space-spanning connections and flows of information, things, and people undermine the rootedness of a wide range of located processes, we can consider the possibility of space conquering place. Are new technologies – the container, the Internet, the cell phone — making places obsolete?
What is the place of BCA… located on the edge of Europe but defined by our connections to other spaces, centers and margins around the world? Over our 20 year history BCA has become a centre, locus and meeting point for our students, resident artists and faculty whose networks extend all over the world. What does this place mean to you? What could BCA ultimately become?
We call on our alumni to respond to these ideas and to develop new perspectives on place and space through art works proposed for this exhibition.
Submissions and proposals for 2D wall mounted works, video/film and sound work from all alumni are welcome.
The deadline for submissions is 30th April 2014.
To be part of “The Middle of Everywhere” please submit a written proposal that includes the following:
Please do not send original artworks as we cannot be responsible if anything happens to them. Address your entires to: The Middle of Everywhere, Burren College of Art, Newtown Castle, Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare or email to aphillips@Burrencollege.ie
If you have any questions or need advice about what to include in your proposal please email aphillips@Burrencollege.ie

Leitrim County Council Arts Office seeks interest from artists who wish to participate in SPARK, an artists’ residency programme aimed at artists who are interested in working in new environments and companies who are interested in collaborating with artists and promoting creativity within their organisations.

These strands may remain separate or merge into one programme or line of enquiry which serves both the needs of the artist and the needs of the company.
The two companies selected to participate in the 2014 Spark programme are The Hive www.the-hive.ie, and Leitrim Observer www.leitrimobserver.ie, both in Carrick on Shannon.
Artists wishing to apply should contact Christine at Leitrim County Council Arts Office at ckelly@leitrimcoco.ie to declare their interest in the programme, and whether you will attend the SPARK site visit.
Closing Date for expression of interest: 5pm, Friday 11th April.

Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal Competition 2014 Now Open for Entries
Deadline: Friday, 26 September 2014, 5.00pm
RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta
Casla, CO GALWAY
The competition for the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal 2014 is now open to entries. This year’s competition is for fiddle, and closing date is 26 September.
The Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal 2013 was won by Kerry concertina player Cormac Begley at the final held in Cork in February. As well as the medal, he also won a cash prize of €2000.
The competition, now in its fifth year, was initiated by musician and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta presenter Peadar Ó Riada on his radio programme Cuireadh chun Ceoil because he felt that there was far too much emphasis on technique and ornamentation in traditional music competitions these days. In this competition judges deem character, spirit and musicality as being equally as important as technical proficiency.
To enter, musicians should record 5 pieces of music and upload them to www.cuireadhchunceoil.ie, or alternatively burn them to CD and send them to Peadar Ó Riada. Full details are on the website. Those intending to enter are advised to do so as soon as possible, rather than waiting for the closing date.
15 musicians will be shortlisted, and they will take part in a concert in February in the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork, where the winner will be chosen.
Over the next few months Peadar Ó Riada will play some of the entries to the competition on his weekly traditional music programme Cuireadh chun Ceoil on Raidió na Gaeltachta on Fridays at 7 pm. Listeners can also register with the website www.cuireadhchunceoil.ie to hear the entries.

Exhibiting at Turn-berlin
Turn-berlin is an artist funded space, with a large gallery in the middle of the biggest concentration of art in Europe. We are working to find the most effective ways of progressing an artists name and reputation. By introducing a more integrated approach we can be more effective and develop wider opportunities.
The intense experience of showing work in a gallery is the best way to have work seen. To get the most from exhibiting which can be a relatively short event, to include it as part of a comprehensive package gives more considered exposure. Developing a name is the only way forward, it takes time and a lot of determination. This is why many artists are finding new ways of being seen. If you don’t exhibit you are only doing half of the job, but taking a positive approach to exhibiting should include other forms.
We are now big enough to be a representational gallery offering a full promotional package. More information on turn-berlin’s long term approach to developing artists is on the following link: http://turn-berlin.de/application/index.html
Address: turn-berlin Gallery, Josetti Höfe, Rungestr 22-24, 10179 Berlin, Germany.
Deadline: Open.

New service for VAI Members - International Studio Exchange with fellow artists around the world
We are pleased to announce a new service available to paid members of Visual Artists Ireland. In partnership with Artquest, VAI has negotiated places for members on their Artelier international studio exchange. Artelier is for professional visual artists to arrange free studio exchanges with their peers anywhere in the world.
Membership of Artelier is by 'invitation only' to ensure it is only used by professional visual artists and is safe for members. Members can request an invitation by contacting us through our Artelier webpages.
This is a great opportunity to meet fellow artists around the world and potentially find artists with studios looking to exchange with the city you live in. You can also find and arrange free accommodation or a studio on holiday or when working overseas, or indeed, find someone to look after your studio or apartment while you are away.
Artelier keeps your exact location and personal contact information private until you choose to let individual artists know where you are.
