Like Father, Like Son (Soshite chichi ni naru)

Japan  2013  120mins  Japanese with English subtitles

Director Hirokazu Koreeda (I Wish) presents the heartfelt story of two families who discover that their six-year-old sons have been inadvertently switched at birth due to a clerical error, after a primary school blood test reveals the truth. The film focuses on one of the fathers: Ryota Nonomiya, an ambitious and hard-working professional architect who lives with his wife Midori in a well-appointed Tokyo apartment with son Keita. It also transpires that Ryota’s biological son has been living across town with a family that owns a small electrical shop. Faced with the decision of raising his biological son or the one he has looked after since birth, Ryota begins questioning everything he has ever known about being a father. Winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival 2013.

“A master manipulator, Hirokazu nudges his cast towards performances that swell with honesty and integrity.” - Donald Clarke, The Irish Times

“A deceptively rich and rewarding drama, small of gesture, huge of heart.” - Mark Kermode, The Observer

“A piercing, tender poem about the bittersweet ebb and flow of paternal love.” - Robbie Collin, Daily Telegraph

Adm. €5

Le Week-end

UK, France  2013  92mins  English language

Married British couple Nick and Meg (Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan) celebrate their thirtieth wedding anniversary with a sentimental weekend getaway to Paris, their first visit since their honeymoon. But as they visit its various locations, the ‘City of Love’ acts as a backdrop to a relationship that is sometimes not as ideal as the weekend’s aspirations might suggest. When Meg and Nick run into their insufferably successful old friend (Jeff Goldblum), their squabbles rise to a register that's both emotionally rich and very funny. The third collaboration between director Roger Michell and screenwriter Hanif Kureishi (The Mother, Venus), with a cast on top form.

“Lightly played, often very funny… shot with energy and wit, and boosted by superb, inquiring turns from Broadbent and Duncan. Michell and Kureishi’s strongest yet. Delightful.” - Dave Calhoun, Time out

“The whole movie, beautifully judged, keeps surprising us.” - Nigel Andrews, Financial Times

“Bittersweet, charming.” - Dennis Harvey, Variety

“A finely matched Broadbent and Duncan explore the wrinkles of marriage with humor and honesty.” - David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter

“A surprisingly honest and entertaining affair that manages to delight without running away from darkness.” - Mark Kermode, The Observer

Adm. €5
