Mayo Ideas Week Event in Ballina Arts Centre
This Mayo Ideas Week session is an initiative of Mayo County Council Arts Office and Inspiration Station and will take place in Ballina Arts Centre from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm on Wednesday 17th September.
Rebecca Smith, Creative Director of Urban Projections will present an overview of Projection Mapping (video mapping / spatial augmented reality) for advertisers, designers, artists, event organisers, architects and others interested in how technology can alter and enhance how we experience the world. This session will be of particular interest to anyone who is engaged in creative production, but it is open to everyone to attend.
Rebecca Smith is a Multimedia Artist based in the East Midlands, UK, whose skill set includes an array of creative communication, including; 3D Animation, Film production, graphic design, audio production, sound design, creative coding, motion design and live visual systems. She creates live performances that combine cutting edge projection techniques with new technologies, including; projection mapping, augmented sculpture, live drawing systems and interactive media. In 2005, Rebecca founded Urban Projections, a creative collective of multimedia experimentalists, who specialise in delivering innovative performance opportunities and creative projects, for both artistic and commercial output. Clients have included: Vauxhall, BBC, Jimmy Choo, Rolls Royce, Coca Cola, Dr Marten and the British Red Cross.
Rebecca’s work seeks to discover new, and original, ways of presenting digital media for audience interaction, pushing the boundaries of creative possibility and pioneering new approaches to mixed media application. Above all, her work always remains accessible to its audience, regardless of the intricacy of its design.Rebecca’s work has been viewed in prestigious venues throughout the UK and Europe, such as The Saatchi Gallery, Royal Festival Hall, Nottingham Contemporary and The Roundhouse. However, her work is equally at home on the streets and in unusual outdoor locations. With a heavy influence of street art culture, and love of abandoned sites and objects, Rebecca uses forgotten spaces as a canvas for much her work. From 8-storey tower block, to pedestrian underpass or forest location, Rebecca has designed and realised mobile projection systems which further her performance possibilities and allow for truly site specific application. As a live visual artist, Rebecca’s work has provided live visuals to accompany a vast array of musicians and DJ’s, including; Avicii, Gorgon City, and DJ Fresh.

As part of its plan for the development of the arts, Wicklow County Arts Office invites applications from interested parties for funding to develop and deliver new projects of high quality and impact during 2015 which will enhance and complement the strategic development of the arts in the County.
This call is open to organisations and individuals from any part of Ireland across all arts disciplines. Proposals should add significant value to arts practice, experience and/or participation in the arts in County Wicklow and support the Council’s strategic goals for the arts 2014-2016. 2015 is the second year that this initiative has been offered, for information on projects which were awarded in 2014 see www.wicklow.ie, select Other Services and Arts Office. The information is under New Strategic Projects 2014. Projects include a new commission Medicated Milk for dance practitioner Áine Stapleton, a collaborative commission with Arklow Silver Band by composer Ian Wilson, a residency exchange between Wicklow and Cork based artists by Cork Printmakers and a series of Literary Events by Poetry IReladn.
Reflecting the balance of other elements of its programme, the Arts Office would particularly welcome strong applications in literature, film, architecture, and artist development. The Arts Office is also interested in proposals in the visual arts and music.
The Arts Office is particularly interested to hear from national resource organisations, individual curators and artist collectives who have the potential to propose projects which will nurture practice, create connectivity, generate new perspectives and voices within the cultural life of the county and support a diversity of approach.
The total amount of the fund available is subject to finalisation of Wicklow County Arts Office own funding for 2015, but is likely to be a maximum of €60,000. It is intended that a number of projects may be supported through this call to a maximum of €15,000.00 per project.

The Source Arts Centre aims to create a vibrant ’go-to’ space for the arts.
The Source Arts Centre aims to:
Engage
Enrich
Enliven
audiences in Thurles and throughout this region of Tipperary.
In addition to presenting a high quality touring programme of the best on offer across art form on the Irish circuit and internationally where possible, we place a high value on community participation and engagement with our venue. We aim to be the centre where audience and artists collide, interact, inform, enrich and present. With a focus on theatre, families, music, film and dance, in addition to a superb visual arts space, we aim to find new and lasting collaborative approaches with the local professional and amateur artistic community. We aim to create an arts infrastructure which supports and mentors professional artists working in the locality, as resources permit.
The Source Arts Centre would like to work with a Visual Art Curator to apply for funding under the Arts Council Visual Art Curatorial Award. The award opens on 12th August and closes on 11th September 2014. As time is so tight we are now looking for outline proposals from Curators who may be interested in working with The Source to put together a funding application to the Arts Council this September. If the award is similar to that of previous years the funding goes directly to the Curator to work with the arts centre/gallery, has a maximum value of €20,000 and applies to the calendar year 2015. If the joint application is not successful The Source Arts Centre will not be in a position to engage the Curator.
It is intended to apply for funding to achieve the following broad goals:
Curate an exhibition(s) for The Source Arts Centre in 2015
Potential to examine alternative spaces to run alongside the exhibition at The Source Arts Centre
Potential to support the commissioning of new work (funding dependant)
Support The Source Arts Centre to imaginatively engage the public (particularly local schools) through the visual arts
Support The Source Arts Centre to imaginatively engage with local artists and artist groups through the visual arts
Support The Source Arts Centre to imaginatively engage with other arts venues in the county through the visual arts
The aims of the Curatorial Award would be to:
Engage imaginatively with the public and local communities to encourage engagement with and a sense of ownership of the gallery at The Source Arts Centre
Examine the opportunities available to create and present contemporary visual art in
non-dedicated arts spaces
Develop through good critical writing, a local, national and international audience for contemporary visual arts in Thurles and surrounding area
The brief is intended to be open to the interpretation, and individual response of the Curator. These goals identify some parameters on which the Curator can base a response. It is recognised that at this application stage the Curator would not be in a position to articulate fully what may arise during the period of the Award. The Source Arts Centre is open to negotiation in relation to possible exhibition or other visual interventions in the public sphere to take place at the suggestion of the Curator. Work in the exhibition(s) can potentially include individual artists, collections, or works from visual artist’s collectives.

Masterclass with Peter Ablinger at the Contemporary Music Centre | Call for Participation from Composers / Sound Artists
Contemporary Music Centre, 19 Fishamble St, Dublin 8
Austrian composer Peter Ablinger will attend the Contemporary Music Centre for a masterclass with six composers/sound artists on Thursday 18 September. Since the early 1980s, Peter Ablinger has explored new aesthetic and technical fields in his works, examining listeners’ perceptions of sound, noise, timbre, performance context, and non-narrative forms through site-specific performances, installations, text-based works, instrumental and electronic collaborations (including his famous ‘speaking piano’ pieces), and music without sound.
Peter Ablinger will be visiting Dublin to oversee a Dublin Sound Lab performance of his site-specific work ‘Places’ (17 September 2014), specially rewritten for three Dublin spaces. This concert will be followed by a second programme, ‘Responses’ (18 September 2014), in which four Irish composers-Piaras Hoban, Gráinne Mulvey, Fergal Dowling and Rob Canning-respond to Ablinger’s work. Both concerts are hosted in the Tiger Dublin Fringe Festival and begin at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios at 8pm.
Dublin Sound Lab and the Contemporary Music Centre invite Irish composers, sound artists and others to apply for participation in this masterclass by sending an expression of interest and work samples-scores, texts, recordings, graphic documentation, or other suitable materials-to info@dublinsoundlab.ie by 3 September. (For large files, please use Dropbox, WeTransfer, or other file sharing facility.) The masterclass is free to attend but is restricted to a maximum of six participants. The Contemporary Music Centre will cover travel expenses within Ireland within reason. Selected participants will be notified by 10 September and must be available to attend both concerts in Dublin, 17 and 18 September.

Mayo based artist Anthony Foutz, exhibition in the Horse Hospital, London.
PRIVATE VIEW: Friday 5th September 7pm
EXHIBITION: Sat 6th September – Sat 27th September, Mon – Sat, 12 – 6pm
AN AUDIENCE WITH DONOVAN: Saturday 6th September, 8pm
Linda Leitch presents: SATURATION 70
A vision past of the future foretold: The greatest cult movie you have never seen
In September, the Horse Hospital will host an exhibition that documents and recreates an extraordinary lost pop culture artefact—Saturation 70—an uncompleted science-fiction fantasy film about ecological destruction shot in and around a UFO convention at Giant Rock (near Joshua Tree) and Los Angeles in 1969 and 1970.
This visionary film project—a ‘Wizard of Oz’ for the 60s counter-culture—was helmed by writer-director Tony Foutz and starred Julian Jones Leitch (the then five year-old son of Brian Jones), Gram Parsons, Michelle Phillips (of the Mamas and the Papas), Stash Klossowski de Rola (the bon vivant son of painter Balthus) and couturier to the stars, Nudie Cohn (of ‘Nudie suit’ fame).
In 1967, Foutz was working on another film project entitled Maxagasm, a feature film vehicle for the Rolling Stones to star in and produce an original soundtrack, with a script co-written with Sam Shepard. The film, which was optioned by James Coburn, was the hottest unproduced script in Hollywood for several years.
While planning special effects sequences for Maxagasm with Douglas Trumbull, Foutz was tipped off about the UFO convention at Giant Rock and decided to make a documentary there to test out his and Trumbull’s ideas. The documentary turned into a larger feature film project—Saturation 70—about a group of aliens (the Kosmic Kiddies) who land on earth to save it from ecological destruction, and in the process assist a lost Victorian star child (Julian Jones) who has fallen through a wormhole to return to his own time and place.
Much like Alejandro Jodorowksy’s legendary unrealized adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic, Dune—subject of the acclaimed recent documentary, Jodorowksy’s Dune—Saturation 70 was a project ahead of its time.
The film was co-produced by special effects maestro Douglas Trumbull, who had just completed work on Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, and intended as a showcase for the radical film and computer effects he was developing at his facility in the San Fernando Valley. Another veteran of 2001, British cinematographer Bruce Logan (later the special effects director on Star Wars and Tron), shot Foutz’s film. Gram Parsons and Roger McGuinn of the Byrds were set to compose original songs and score for the film, with McGuinn utilising his newly-acquired Moog synthesizer.
Many elements from Foutz’s original script, which is packed with prescient themes and imagery, would be explored by other filmmakers in years to come. He wrote of ‘data clouds’, projecting propaganda in the sky, that would later find form in the advertising dirigibles featured in Ridley Scott’s Bladerunner over a decade later.
Principal photography on Saturation 70 was all-but-complete when the funding fell through. The footage subsequently disappeared.
The exhibition at the Horse Hospital will feature all that remains of the project: pages from the script, a series of never-before-seen production stills and behind-the-scenes photos from the Saturation 70 shoot, alongside a screening of the only-existing footage from the film, a five minute showreel cut to the Flying Burrito Brother’s version of the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses”, which was recorded contemporaneously to the Saturation 70 shoot for the second Burrito Brothers album, Burrito Deluxe, which also features the band dressed in costumes from the film on its sleeve.

Atelier for Young Festival Managers in Beirut, 21-27 March 2015: apply now!
Are you part of the next generation of artistic festival directors? Do you want to broaden your programming skills and be inspired by colleagues and experienced leaders in the field? Do you want to join a new network of future festival leaders worldwide? Take part in the Atelier for Young Festival Managers.
The Festival Academy’s 2015 Atelier for Young Festival Managers, initiated by the European Festivals Association (EFA), will take place from 21 to 27 March 2015 in Beirut, Lebanon, in collaboration with the Beiteddine Art Festival. Young festival managers from all over the world are invited to apply until 12 September 2014. In the vibrant Lebanese cultural city, some 10 renowned festival directors will guide 45 participants through the 7-day training programme.
“After the Atelier for Young Festival Managers planned for 2013 had to be postponed, I am happy to reiterate my invitation to host the first Atelier in the Arab world in Beirut, Lebanon in March 2015. I am looking forward to welcoming all the young festival managers in this artistically vibrant city that is Beirut,” said Nora Joumblatt, President of the Beiteddine Art Festival.
Share your experiences on the essence of art festivals
The Atelier for Young Festival Managers is an intense and rigorous 7-day training platform addressed at emerging artistic festival directors or those who have ambitions to become involved in programming or in programming-related departments within a festival. It is all about sharing experiences and passing on knowledge to a next generation of festival makers: knowledge about programming a festival, while focusing on the very essence of art festivals – the arts and the artist.
It is guided by the motto “The true role of a festival is to help artists to dare, to engage in new projects,” borrowed from Bernard Faivre d’Arcier, longstanding Director of the Avignon Festival and President of the Lyon Biennial (France).
Explore festival issues in various formats
45 young festival managers from all over the world will be selected to participate in the Atelier. Around 10 distinguished festival directors, renowned festival pioneers, will each attend for at least two full days and guide participants throughout the 7 days. In lectures, one-on-one talks, group discussions as well as intense workshops on case studies, issues such as artistic vision, public responsibility, creation and coproduction, internationalisation, networking, renewal and sustainability will be explored. First presenters will be announced soon. Have a look at the list of presenters of the previous Ateliers.
Join a unique new network
223 Alumni from 56 countries emerged from six Ateliers for Young Festival Managers since 2006 in Goerlitz, Varna, Singapore, Izmir, Ljubljana and Edinburgh. Participants of the Beirut edition will become part of this unique global network of young festival makers which will further increase after the upcoming Atelier in Poznan (October 2014).
How to apply
The application form must be submitted by 12 September 2014. All information on the Atelier, selection criteria, application procedure and application form can be found on the Atelier website.
