LORG PRINT EXHIBITION AT LINENHALL ARTS CENTRE, CASTLEBAR

“Oddity”, an exhibition of contemporary fine art print by Lorg Fine Art Printmakers, continues at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar until Saturday 23rd August.

“Oddity” is a members submission exhibition which brings both established and new members of Lorg Fine Art Printmakers to create a contemporary fine art print exhibition.

Each year, Lorg Fine Art Printmakers invites submissions from over 90 members, contributing to a diverse, high standard array of print making techniques visible each year in the Lorg Fine Art Printmakers Members Exhibition. In 2014, artists were asked to respond to the theme of 'Oddities and Marvels within Manmade and Natural Frameworks'. The resulting exhibition, “Oddity”, comprises around 25 pieces of work which will demonstrate various techniques from traditional to modern printmaking techniques, including collagraph, copper plate etching, screenprint and digital. A fascinating and engaging show.

Lorg Printmakers (formerly Connaught Association of Printmakers) is a non-profit organisation that came together in order to create a print workshop and artists' resource organisation in Galway. Established in 1998, Lorg has been involved in many local and national festivals and exhibitions including Galway Arts Festival, Tulca, and Clifden Arts Festival, as well as running education courses and workshops for people of all levels of ability, and a number of very successful outreach projects. WARRIOR'S ONE IN THREE AT LINENHALL ARTS CENTRE, CASTLEBAR

Amanda Jane Graham's exhibition "Warrior's One in Three" will open at the Linenhall Arts Centre on Friday 29th August at 7.30pm

It has been substantially documented that cancer will touch one in three of us. Warriors One in Three is a mixed media exhibition that acknowledges the stoic bravery, dignity and resilience of people that have faced serious illness. “Through this exhibition the victim becomes the warrior by addressing perceptions of conflicting cultural projections played out through society. My practice is a trajectory of self-reflection, personnal narrative, and memoirs where the viewer completes the experience. Handmade process is essential to the practice. The traditional mediums of drawing, fine print, collage, embroidery and wool crafts are key to generating the intricate visual representation that penetrates the memory of the observer creating unconscious and organic emotional reactions. The exhibition will have the power touch, engage and connect with the collective experience of the audience because it will be tender, uplifting and compelling.” Amanda completed an MA Fine Art at National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 2011.

“Atlantic - Paintings”, an exhibition by Irish artist Donald Teskey RHA, 9th August - 10th October 2014, The Ballinglen Gallery, The Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Main Street, Ballycastle, Co Mayo, Ireland. Open 10 - 12, 2 - 4 pm Monday - Friday and strictly by appointment at weekends with a reception on 9th August 8:30pm, everyone welcome.

Donald Teskey has arguably become one of the best known landscape painters of his generation.  His paintings of the Irish landscape are dramatic works that capture the power of nature and the sheer rugged beauty of the Irish landscape. In particular, he captures the West Coast of Ireland to perfection. He has devoted much focus to observing and painting the relentless and elemental nature of coastline and sea.

Donald was born in Co. Limerick and graduated from Limerick College of Art and Design in 1978. He came to prominence as an artist through his skill as a draughtsman during the 1980s, with several significant solo exhibitions as well as being the recipient of awards in EVA and the Claremorris Open Exhibition. Since 1992 he has crafted out a substantial body of work as a painter of the landscape and more recently the ruggedness of the western seaboard. Sometimes, working on a very large scale, his images reflect his response to the formal elements of composition; shape, form and fall of light. The results are powerful images of instantly recognisable parts of the Irish landscape with large abstract passages and surfaces which articulate the relentless energetic and elemental force of nature.

In 2003 he was elected a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin. He is also a member of Áosdana.
His work has been exhibited in the UK, USA, South Africa, Canada, Germany and Finland. In 2005, Limerick City Gallery of Art hosted "Tidal Narratives", an exhibition of large scale paintings and drawings coinciding with the publication of a book on the artist by Gandon Editions. He is represented in major collections including the Arts Council, Irish Museum of Modern Art, AIB, Limerick City Gallery of Art, KPMG, Butler Gallery, The Ulster Bank, OPW and The Ballinglen Arts Foundation. Donald lives and works in Dublin.

Donald is represented by the Oliver Sears Gallery in Dublin, Ireland www.oliversearsgallery.com & the Dolan/Maxwell Gallery, Philadelphia http://www.dolanmaxwell.com
The work of the Foundation (Irish Charity 11019) is supported by The Arts Council, The Ireland Funds, Mayo County Council & private contributors.

COE 2014

It's that time of year again and activity is stepping up a gear as Preparations get under way for the annual Claremorris Open Exhibition. For over 35 years COE has brought the very best in contemporary art to the West of Ireland in an exhibition that has long established itself as one of the premier events on the Irish visual arts calendar.

The event is highly regarded both at home and abroad and over the years has attracted artists from the thirty two counties, the U.K., Europe and as far afield as the United States, Australia and Asia. The event is also renowned for its commitment to the highest of standards with a list of curators that forms a veritable who's who of Irish and U.K contemporary art. Recent curators have included David Thorpe (Director of The Henry Moore Foundation, London), Tom Morton (UK based curator and contributing editor of Frieze magazine), Lizzie Carey-Thomas (Curator of Contemporary Art at Tate Britain) as well as a host of others, many of whom have served on the selection panels for such prestigious events as the Turner Prize, the Liverpool Biennial and the Venice Biennale.

This year's curator is Michelle Cotton. A graduate of English at King’s College London and the History of Art MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, Michelle Cotton has curated over 30 exhibitions and film screenings including projects at Kettles Yard, Cambridge; Tate Britain, Tate Modern, London; Tate St Ives, Whitechapel Gallery, London and Neuer Berliner Kunstverein including solo exhibitions by Michel Auder, Henning Bohl, Wolfgang Breuer, Christodoulos Panayiotou, Paul Sietsema and Stephen Sutcliffe. She has published numerous reviews, essays and articles and is the author of the recently published Design Research Unit 1942 – 72 (Koenig Books, 2011).

Michelle was awarded the Curatorial Bursary at Cubitt, London in 2009. She has been part of the panel for New Acquisitions at LUX (2006–2008) and a Specialist Advisor to the Scottish Arts Council (2006–2010). She is a member of the Acquisitions Committee for the collection at the FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, Reims and a selector for the Contemporary Art Society’s Annual Award for Museum’s 2012.

Michelle recently visited Claremorris to select the works that will form COE 2014. It would be difficult to be envious of Michelle's task, with over 200 artists submitting proposals and a standard of work that was as high if not higher than ever. Nevertheless, it was a case of job done as Michelle boarded her flight home having completed the arduous task of making the final selection.

Below is a list of the artists selected to participate in COE 2014.

The exhibition will open on Sep 13 and will be on show in a number of key locations in the town until Oct 4.

More details will follow shortly. In the meantime keep an eye out for updates on www.coearts.org.
