Gráinne Mhaol Show returns for the 6th Year at Hotel Westport

The highly acclaimed traditional music and dance show The Legend of Gráinne Mhaol at Hotel Westport received a standing ovation following a sold out opening performance of the show last week in Westport. The show, which runs every Wednesday until the end of September received glowing reviews from everyone in attendance with many stating they will be returning with family and friends later in the summer.

Speaking at the launch of the sixth season of the show in Westport, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring TD said the promotion of traditional music, song and dance was central in developing and increasing tourism figures in County Mayo.

“We often don’t realise the wonderful talents we have on our own doorstep here in County Mayo and it is fantastic to have a world class production to showcase real Ireland to the world,” he said. “This is a wonderful tourism product and I am thrilled to support the Grainne Mhaol show every year. I have seen this show develop over the past five years and it is simply getting better and better every year,” concluded Minister Ring.

The Gráinne Mhaol Show is based on the real-life story of the legendary Irish Pirate and Chieftain, Grace O’ Malley or Gráinne Mhaol and it is a wonderful celebration of Irish music, song and dance. The show features a wealth of talented musicians and dancers from all over the west of Ireland.

Achill native James Kilbane is also back for his sixth season having just returned from a whirlwind USA tour. “The Grainne Mhaol show is just magical. It has passion and power just like Grainne Mhaol herself but there is also tragedy and sorrow in the show. I just hope everyone gets a chance to see it this summer,” commented Kilbane.

The Grainne Mhaol show is full of energy and enthusiasm and guarantees to keep audiences of all ages gripped from start to finish as it blends the old and the new; the contemporary and the ancient, the Sean Nós dancing against modern step dancing.

Tickets for the Gráinne Mhaol show cost €25 and are available from Hotel Westport at (098) 25122 or www.grainnemhaol.com
