Gráinne Mhaol Show returns for the 6th Year at Hotel Westport

The highly acclaimed traditional music and dance show The Legend of Gráinne Mhaol at Hotel Westport received a standing ovation following a sold out opening performance of the show last week in Westport.  The show, which runs every Wednesday until the end of September received glowing reviews from everyone in attendance with many stating they will be returning with family and friends later in the summer.

Speaking at the launch of the sixth season of the show in Westport, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring TD said the promotion of traditional music, song and dance was central in developing and increasing tourism figures in County Mayo.

“We often don’t realise the wonderful talents we have on our own doorstep here in County Mayo and it is fantastic to have a world class production to showcase real Ireland to the world,” he said.  “This is a wonderful tourism product and I am thrilled to support the Grainne Mhaol show every year.  I have seen this show develop over the past five years and it is simply getting better and better every year,” concluded Minister Ring.

The Gráinne Mhaol Show is based on the real-life story of the legendary Irish Pirate and Chieftain, Grace O’ Malley or Gráinne Mhaol and it is a wonderful celebration of Irish music, song and dance. The show features a wealth of talented musicians and dancers from all over the west of Ireland.

Achill native James Kilbane is also back for his sixth season having just returned from a whirlwind USA tour.  “The Grainne Mhaol show is just magical.  It has passion and power just like Grainne Mhaol herself but there is also tragedy and sorrow in the show.  I just hope everyone gets a chance to see it this summer,” commented Kilbane.

The Grainne Mhaol show is full of energy and enthusiasm and guarantees to keep audiences of all ages gripped from start to finish as it blends the old and the new; the contemporary and the ancient, the Sean Nós dancing against modern step dancing.

Tickets for the Gráinne Mhaol show cost €25 and are available from Hotel Westport at (098) 25122 or www.grainnemhaol.com

Workers Symposium | July 18th | Roscommon Arts Centre

This one day symposium coincides with the exhibition at Roscommon Arts Centre, also titled The Workers, and features works by Michelle Browne, Gareth Kennedy & Elaine Reynolds, each of whom have participated on the Art@Work programme in the past.
The symposium will reflect on contemporary modes of visual art production in rural contexts and the mechanisms and partnerships available to support them. This symposium will provide a platform for reviewing the Art@Work model that has been supported by Roscommon Arts Office for 10 years. The cultural, economical, social and physical landscape of the County has evolved since Art@Work's inception and this symposium will provide the opportunity to explore potential changes to the project. Over the course of the day visual artists will discuss and present their experiences of producing artworks in rural contexts while creators and facilitators of rurally based projects and representatives from International programmes will present case studies.

Art@work began in 2001 when Roscommon County Council invited artists to reside at a Roscommon business over a 15 day duration to create works that responded to the environment, materials and staff of their host company. The project was successful on many levels in terms of financially supporting artists who wished to work in collaborative environments, demystified contemporary art practices as many of the artists involved chose to make their work in very public situations and broadened the audience base for engaging with visual art in the County. Over 60 artists have engaged with the project, working with over 30 businesses.

COE 2014

It's that time of year again and activity is stepping up a gear as Preparations get under way for the annual Claremorris Open Exhibition. For over 35 years COE has brought the very best in contemporary art to the West of Ireland in an exhibition that has long established itself as one of the premier events on the Irish visual arts calendar.

The event is highly regarded both at home and abroad and over the years has attracted artists from the thirty two counties, the U.K., Europe and as far afield as the United States, Australia and Asia. The event is also renowned for its commitment to the highest of standards with a list of curators that forms a veritable who's who of Irish and U.K contemporary art. Recent curators have included David Thorpe (Director of The Henry Moore Foundation, London), Tom Morton (UK based curator and contributing editor of Frieze magazine), Lizzie Carey-Thomas (Curator of Contemporary Art at Tate Britain) as well as a host of others, many of whom have served on the selection panels for such prestigious events as the Turner Prize, the Liverpool Biennial and the Venice Biennale.

This year's curator is Michelle Cotton. A graduate of English at King’s College London and the History of Art MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, Michelle Cotton has curated over 30 exhibitions and film screenings including projects at Kettles Yard, Cambridge; Tate Britain, Tate Modern, London; Tate St Ives, Whitechapel Gallery, London and Neuer Berliner Kunstverein including solo exhibitions by Michel Auder, Henning Bohl, Wolfgang Breuer, Christodoulos Panayiotou, Paul Sietsema and Stephen Sutcliffe. She has published numerous reviews, essays and articles and is the author of the recently published Design Research Unit 1942 – 72 (Koenig Books, 2011).

Michelle was awarded the Curatorial Bursary at Cubitt, London in 2009. She has been part of the panel for New Acquisitions at LUX (2006–2008) and a Specialist Advisor to the Scottish Arts Council (2006–2010). She is a member of the Acquisitions Committee for the collection at the FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, Reims and a selector for the Contemporary Art Society’s Annual Award for Museum’s 2012.

Michelle recently visited Claremorris to select the works that will form COE 2014. It would be difficult to be envious of Michelle's task, with over 200 artists submitting proposals and a standard of work that was as high if not higher than ever. Nevertheless, it was a case of job done as Michelle boarded her flight home having completed the arduous task of making the final selection.

Below is a list of the artists selected to participate in COE 2014.

The exhibition will open on Sep 13 and will be on show in a number of key locations in the town until Oct 4.

Bram Stoker Festival – Call for submissions

The Bram Stoker Festival celebrates the life, work and legacy of Bram Stoker and his gothic masterpiece ‘Dracula’. Running from 24th – 27th October 2014, the festival will see Dublin transformed into a lively gothic-inspired city of the macabre.

The festival is currently inviting submissions from artists, arts organisations and creative producers to engage with the city, its public and the festival by responding with ideas for unique work of all scales that will thrill audiences of all ages. The main focus for the call-out this year is work that gives a contemporary twist to gothic interpretations stemming from Bram Stoker’s work. We are hoping to commission contemporary work inspired by more recent takes on “the gothic”.

This call-out is open to performance and installation based art forms (e.g. dance, music, opera, theatre, visual art, sound art, video art etc.).

The successful proposals will ideally involve artists making new work as a central aspect of the commission, but pre-existing work that clearly sits within the context of the festival is also welcome.

Context

Bram Stoker (1847 – 1912), was born in Dublin and was the author of the classic gothic novel, Dracula (1897), which has since become one of the most influential cultural phenomena of the modern era.

Stoker did not invent vampires, but his Count Dracula became the mark by which, all other vampire stories are measured. Since his death Stoker has remained a somewhat enigmatic and isolated figure. When he died, not a single obituary mentioned his most famous work. Today it has been translated into over fifty languages and Count Dracula has become the most filmed fictional character in movie history.

The Bram Stoker Festival aspires to honour his memory and achievements and to encourage a spirit of enquiry and curiosity, inspired by the creator of one of literature’s most famous characters. Bram Stoker was a man of action: a high-achieving student at Trinity; a fine athlete; a dynamic theatrical manager during his tenure as director of London’s Lyceum Theatre.

Now in its 3rd year, the 2014 festival is being programmed and produced in 2014 by Big House Productions.

Workshops & Readings at Scoil Acla 2014

Achill Island, Ireland

Scoil Acla 2014 are pleased  to present  Writers Workshop with Macdara Woods. 28 July - 1 Aug 2014 . Cyril Gray Hall Dugort  Achill Island.

Public reading from Workshop participants with Macdara Woods.  Ted Lavelle’s Bar, Cashel, Achill.    Friday August 1st  8.00pm.  http://scoilacla.ie/

Poetry Readings  by Aideen Henry and Harry Clifton on Tuesday  July   29th  at 8.00pm at the  Cyril Gray Hall Dugort  Achill Island.

Aideen Henry

Aideen Henry lives in Galway and works as a writer, physician and lecturer. Her poems have been published previously in several literary journals and magazines including Crannóg, The SHOp,  Ropes, The Cúirt Annual and Southword, and she has given many poetry readings around the country.  She was shortlisted for the 2009 Hennessy X.O. Literary Awards.  This is her first collection of poetry.  She also writes plays and short stories.

Her collection Hands Moving at the Speed of Falling Snow (Salmon Poetry 2011) explores a spectrum of conflicting emotions that hold us in their power.  Some poems meticulously describe people and their particular ways, the point of view of the child interwoven with that of the adult.  Other poems show a view of damage as though viewed from inside a wound; they try to name the unnameable, speak the unspeakable, to make sense of the complexities of life when experienced acutely.  Throughout the collection there is a palpable sense of multiple parallel realities which surface at intervals from the subterranean continuum of the unconscious mind. This gives a feeling of pause, of an imagination straining to leave the quiet bay for the pitch and roll of the open sea. She is working on a 2nd collection of poetry. She also writes plays and short stories. She is writer in residence at the Heinrich Böll Cottage in July 2014.

Harry Clifton

Harry Clifton was born in Dublin in 1952, but has travelled widely in Africa and Asia, as well as more recently in Europe. He won the Patrick Kavanagh award in 1981 and has been the recipient of fellowships in Germany, France, the United States and Australia. He has published five collections of poems,  including The Desert Route:Selected Poems 1973-88 and Night Train through the Brenner, all from Gallery Press. On the Spine of Italy, his prose study of an Abruzzese mountain community, was published by Macmillan in 1999. A collection of his short fiction, Berkeley’s Telephone, appeared from Lilliput Press in 2000.
