MUSIC GENERATION MAYO – Summer Camps

SoundWorlds Explorers!

Tuesday 1st – Friday 4th July 2014 in The Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar

 The SoundWorld Explorers summer camp aims to introduce young children to creative expression and natural discovery through music in a relaxed, fun-filled and magical environment. Using a variety of engaging and colourful instruments they can explore sounds and release the budding musician within! During the course of the camp they will be introduced to live music demonstrations on wind and percussion instruments and will experience music and sound through movement, body percussion, animated stories, songs and rhymes.

Times: 12.30-2pm daily

Age-group: 5-7 yrs - boys and girls welcome!

Sing It OUT! Voice Camp

Monday 13th– Thursday 17th July 2014 in Westport College of Further Education

The Sing It OUT! summer camp will focus on developing young voices and giving young performers the tools to enhance their current skills, with guidance on important vocal traits such as warming-up the voice, breath work and developing range and tone. The group will work on pieces ranging from Disney classics to modern pop songs and participants are welcome to incorporate pieces they have already been working on. There will also be an emphasis on performance with some light choreography and staging addressed also – if you want to build your vocal confidence, make new friends and have fun, then this is the Summer Camp for you!

Finola will be assisted during the camp by Maureen Joyce, local singer and apprentice voice coach.

Times: 11am-3pm daily

Age-group: 8-16 yrs - boys and girls welcome!

Rock Steady! Band Camp

Monday 21st – Wednesday 23rd July 2014 at the Youth Music Hub in Ballina Arts Centre

Are you a young musician aged 13-18 yrs? Are you a sing-songwriter or in a band? This summer camp is a great opportunity for you to work with professional musician Philip Cassidy and his touring band ‘21 OUTS’ at the Youth Music Hub situated in the Ballina Arts Centre. The Hub was established by Music Generation Mayo in 2013 to promote and encourage youth music based activities and performances for young people. Resources available include a dedicated rehearsal space, fully kitted out with professional instruments and equipment with regular music workshops and advice clinics programmed on a continuing basis.

For three days in July Philip will complete a series of workshops focusing on a wide range of topics including instrument technology; guitar, drums and bass, stagecraft, P.A. set-up, prmomotion and performance skills. The band will share their knowledge of the music industry with aspiring young musicians, looking at topics such as how to record, release and promote yourself as an artist and get your music out there. Having shared the stage with Irish bands such as Jape, Republic of Loose and The Coronas, ‘21 OUTS' have been described as ‘one of the best lives bands in Ireland’, continually honing craft through national and international performances, having recently returned from a tour of Germany, Holland the U.K.

This is a great opportunity for young musicians to engage with the band who will guide and advise them over the course of the three days in a variety of topics and encourage them in developing their own performance skills with access to rehearsal rooms and the main theatre stage at the Ballina Arts Centre.

Times: 11am-2pm daily

American  printmaker Joel Feldman at Custom House Studios – printmaking course and public lecture.

American artist and printmaker Joel Feldman  will give a 3 day printmaking workshop and  a public Lecture at Custom House Studios at Westport Quay. Places are limited booking essential.

The Printmaking workshop will focus on development and use of woodcut, concentrating on but not limited to a style of cutting suited to description. There will also be strong emphasis given to the practical elements associated with wood cut printmaking. This workshop will also contain an element of project based course work designed to explore works  deriving  from the personal interest/experience of each participating  artist.  The workshop will facilitate students to explore work and techniques and also to develop ideas they may have always had but have not had the opportunities to try.  Class time will be spent in demonstration and technical developments, and in discussion with the students supplemented with images of relevant work, contemporary and historical. With the woodcut printmaking there will be an emphasis on practical elements.   

Places are limited to six participants – booking essential  € 100 plus materials.

1. Wednesday  July 23rd            10.00am  – 4.30pm.

First meeting: demonstration, discussion of possibilities, how to work with tools, printing etc - show of actual prints -  introduce and explore woodcut - set a problem.

2. Wednesday  30th      10.00am  – 4.30pm.

Discussion of progress - proofing where necessary.  Individual discussions-participants will have been encouraged to bring in work they have previously done for feedback.

3. Wednesday   August 6th        10.00am  – 4.30pm.

Discussion of progress - proofing where necessary.  Printing of completed images.

Finish up with group discussion. Exchange  portfolios.

4. Wednesday  August 6 th  6.00pm.      Public lecture.

Student / participants will have access to the print studio  between classes on a booking basis,  to work on developing course work.

Mayo County Council Arts Office is currently developing a new five-year strategic arts plan for the county, which will be produced early next year.

We are actively seeking the views of those involved and interested in the arts, at all levels, within the county. This includes arts venues, festivals, artists, communities and people who use, or who benefit from our service.
