Poetry will be to the fore at this summer's West Cork Literary Festival which runs from 6 - 12 July. Acclaimed poet and Booker Prize-winning novelist Ben Okri appears on the opening night and talks about how stories "can conquer fear, can make the heart grow bigger." Awarded an OBE, he is one of the finest writers in the post colonial tradition.
Festival highlights include an evening with Anne Michaels and Paula Meehan, a poetry reading with Leanne O'Sullivan and a poetry workshop with Maurice Riordan.

An Dianchúrsa i Scríobh an Ghearrscéil agus an Úrscéil
MÓINÍN is pleased to announce that, for the fifth successive year, the intensive six-weekend training course in The Writing of the Short Story and Novel will again be conducted free of charge to eight (8) participants selected from the applications for places.
This comprehensive course, An Dianchúrsa i Scríobh an Ghearrscéil agus an Úrscéil is given in MÓINÍN’s purpose built training facility An Scríobhlann / The Writing House in Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare, and the instructor is the accomplished bilingual novelist and short story writer Ré Ó Laighléis. The tuition cost of the course is funded by Foras na Gaeilge. Applications have increased exponentially since the first course in 2010, culminating in 92 applications for the 2013 course. Unfortunately, for purposes of optimal benefit to the participants, the numbers are restricted to eight (8).
It is possible that some prospective writers and or those simply wishing to learn these writing skills, with whom your office may be in touch, may be interested in this opportunity. Proprioception. Kilkenny July 19th/20th. 2014
Proprioception is seeking applications from live art Practitioners and performers of all backgrounds.
Proprioception is a performance event taking place in Kilkenny on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th July 2014. Hosted & curated by John Conway, the event consists of 3 workshops with Fergus Byrne, Ciara McKeon and Francis Mezzetti, culminating in a public exhibition. The workshops and public performance exhibition will be held in a range of spaces across Kilkenny City (see below).
Proprioception is an opportunity for artists to spend an extended period of time symbiotically developing and challenging their performance practice around specific themes and locations. A diverse array of practitioners will be brought together and challenged to create and perform new work. Participants will be introduced to varied forms of performative expression, both as individuals and in collaboration, and encouraged to take risks with their practice.
Workshops:
Fergus Byrne leads Saturday's first workshop. This workshop will allow people to engage their bodies and tune in to the physical processes both of themselves and others.
Ciara McKeon will lead Saturday afternoon's workshop, with a focus on intention, impression and energy.
Frances Mezzetti will host Sunday morning's workshop, focusing on the body as sound instrument in live performance. This workshop aims to facilitate in a playful way an exploration of the person/artist's physicality in creating sound in performance

Exhibition:
The culminating public exhibition on Sunday evening will provide the participants with a tangible outlet for the weekend's energy and creativity. Together, they will perform new works to the public, informed by the symbiotic period spent with one another in a series of stimulating spaces

About the artists/curator:
_Fergus Byrne is an artist working in performance and visual arts. He is a member of the Visual Arts Centre in Dublin. His practice involves drawing, sculpture and writing. Performance allows for an embodied delivery of ideas through these media. He has curated with Deirdre Murphy, Transversal and Generation. These performance events combined dance and performance art in stimulating alternative spaces.
_Ciara McKeon is an artist and curator whose practice focuses on live performance art. She has performed nationally across Ireland and is a member of pre form and Bbeyond, Belfast. Improvisation and collaboration are integral to her practice and research. Recent works have looked in particular at embodied shame, loss and intimacy. She also co-curates Unit1, an independent artist-run platform which supports the development of performance art in Ireland through exhibition of new work, symposia and archival projects.
_Frances Mezzetti’s practice includes site specific performance with vocal soundings and video installation. Much of her work is collaborative in nature. Mezzetti researches the local and personal history of place, recording personal stories and developing ritualized retelling of these, peculiar to the site.
_John Conway is the host and curator of Proprioception 2014. His visual art practice is based on observations, interventions and manipulations of materials and environments. His work encompasses sculpture, installation, performance, video, animation, drawing and painting. The current prominent feature in his work is the exploration of function, and the challenge of mobility. He has exhibited and performed nationally and internationally. John is the 2014 Waterford Healing Arts Trust artist in residence.
Workshop fees:
Participating artists will pay a fee of €30.00
Proprioception is in a position to refund participants with up to €30.00 towards travel/accommodation on production of reciepts, with thanks to the Version One Community Trust Fund.

GARDEN SCULPTURE WORKSHOP 2014
Áras Éanna, Arts and Heritage Centre, Inis Oirr, The Aran Islands 15, 16 & 17 July
Award-winning sculptor and author DJ Garrity will be conducting a Garden Sculpture Workshop at Áras Éanna. Garrity who lives in the West of Ireland is the former Sculptor-In-Residence of Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The artist developed the hands-on workshop at Mount Rushmore as an interpretive training program in collaboration with the National Park Service of America and subsequently conducts the workshop at Botanic Gardens and Museums in America and Europe.
Based on his book, The Rhythms Of Stone, the artist leads participants with no previous experience in a creative process using simple hand tools to create their own unique sculpture in stone for the home, garden or gallery. The workshop has been well received by artists, garden societies and the lifelong learning community.

Lodestar | Summer 2014 at Kylemore Abbey – 18-28 August 2014
A formidable group of artists are coming together to work, discuss, share and reflect in the spectacular environs of Connemara this summer. Lodestar School of Art launches with a 10- day painting and drawing intensive at the historic Kylemore Abbey with a gathering of international artists whose enthusiasm and generosity of spirit should make for a stimulating experience.
Enrollment for Lodestar | Summer 2014 closes the 31st of July. The €1,700 fee includes all workshops, guest talks, excursions, two meals a day, accommodation in Kylemore’s Educational Centre dormitory, closing exhibition and dinner. Lodestar also offers options for a shorter stay of five days, and a non-residential participation for local artists. International Summer School of Physical Theater July 7 - 12, 2014
Participants & Programme:
The annual residential programme is open to dancers, choreographers, physical theater actors, contemporary circus performers and movers with professional stage experience working in various genres, techniques and styles, interested to take part in practical creative research of Physical Theater together with colleagues from all over the world.
Participants will explore the connection between physical action and voice, gesture, movement, dance and word, composition of the form and the artistic space of the performance, gain practical tools and valuable tips for creating contemporary professional productions in limited rehearsal time.

The group will stay and train at the same venue - at the beautiful refurbished castle in the landscape of natural beauty. The castle has its own guest house and restaurant. ONLINE SHORT STORY WRITING COURSE
After the success of both the Online Flash Fiction and Memoir Writing Courses, Fish is proud to announce the launch of the Fish Short Story Writing Course. This tailored online program will not only develop your general writing skills but will explore in depth the potential of the short story genre.
The course offers both new and experienced writers an extensive range of creative ideas and activities to help develop their craft. Course tutor Mary-Jane Holmes will be on hand to offer advice on mastering technique and developing personal style. Writing for Publishing is the title of a new educational initiative being spearheaded by The Manuscript Publisher and designed specifically for authors, writers, independent publishers. It is a creative writing course for the modern publishing age, emphasising the all -important connection between writing and publishing: how one informs the other and how the two operate in today’s era of digital media and mass communication. Arts Courses at Newtownbarry House
The fully equipped Artists Studio is in the old Kitchen of Newtownbarry House. It has beautiful light from its two roof light windows making it an excellent painting and drawing studio. It has easels, a room with sinks and a separate room for painting boards or still life. It can accommodate 12 people on the art courses. It also has a separate room for lunch and discussions. Newtownbarry also offers B&B with a delicious dinner for anybody who wishes to stay. There are also plenty of opportunities to do landscape painting or drawing around the grounds and parkland of the house.

ONLINE MA IN ART AND DESIGN EDUCATION AT LIMERICK SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGN | CALL FOR APPLICANTS
The MA in Art and Design Education is a blended part-time programme that runs over two years.
The programme operates online through networked platforms with college-based seminars and workshops held during eight days over the two years. The next intake is September 2014 and applications from both national and international candidates are currently being accepted.
The programme is designed to meet the need for critically focused advanced-level study for art and design teachers within the contexts of professional in-career development and life-long learning; extend teachers’ learning in areas of creative art and design practice, research and teaching within an online community of practice; make learning experiences available to teachers that take advantage of Web. 2.0 technologies. MFA at the Belfast School of Art, University of Ulster: Call for Applications
The two-year MFA at the Belfast School of Art, University of Ulster seeks to attract outstanding and highly motivated applicants. The MFA was established 1979, is based in Belfast and has a long and proven track record of providing a rigorous studio-based programme with access to the expertise of a core staff of nationally and internationally recognised visiting artists. Within the studio and wider environments the diversity of teaching input by staff and visiting artists reflects the range of approaches and contexts embraced.
We recognise contemporary Art practice as being open and pluralistic and encourages dialogue between diverse disciplines. A multi-disciplinary/ inter-media approach enables students to work in a flexible manner that offers the maximum opportunity for individual practice. Students are asked to engage with systems of enquiry that explore and embrace traditional exhibition formats alongside wider models of production, distribution and dissemination. Critical discourse on practice with an emphasis on analysis and self-reflection contributes to an understanding of contemporary art located within a larger cultural, social and political context.
The MFA supports committed, critically engaged and sustainable professional practice.
The 2010 Turner Prize was won by MFA graduate Susan Phillipsz (1994). Other nominated graduates include Phil Collins, Cathy Wilkes and Christine Borland. Graduates of the MFA have been substantially represented over the years in other high profile events and prizes, including the Venice Biennale, Becks Futures, The Nissan Art Award, New Contemporaries, The John Moores Prize and the Glenn Dimplex Award. Two graduates have been awarded the highly competitive Paul Hamlyn Award. Film production, art writing, gallery management and curation are allied areas where graduates have also been internationally successful.

The MA Art in Public has evolved from current complex concerns for the role of art / artists in a changing society. The MA focuses on a wide set of contexts, it is based in and responds to Belfast, where engaged art practices have been developed in various “public” spaces for many years.
The programme seeks to develop testing modes of working that are dialogic, participatory, interventionist or collaborative in intention and structure.
Throughout the programme students will work with formal / informal external partners and be expected to develop self initiated, innovative practice based approaches.
The programme is run full-time over 3 semesters – a period of 18 months including a summer break. Part-time it is run over a 3 year period.
