Foundation 14 – call for artists submissions

Tullamore - 15 to 28 Sept 2014

www.foundation14.com

Following the highly successful inaugural Foundation 13, visual, digital and performance artists now are invited to make a submission to Foundation 14, a contemporary arts event in Tullamore.

Foundation 14  is offering the following awards

The Foundation14 Undergraduate Award
The Foundation14 Critics Choice Award
The Foundation14 People’s Choice Award

-BATTERY +

The idea becomes a machine that makes the art. – Sol LeWitt

Foundation14's Annual Exhibition 2014 explores notions of both tangible and ephemeral energy, how it may manifest in, or is utilised in its physical, emotional, spiritual, chemical and indeed technical capacities.

“All art is the outcome of energy expelled by the artist. How this may manifest is multifaceted, it is the combination of both the positive and the negative results of process and experimentation. In essence, the work is 'energy' and therefore has a discernible power, a corporal presence beyond its origins within the conceptual realm.”

BLOOD at Science Gallery | Call For Proposals

Calling all artists, scientists, and designers: hot-blooded, blue-blooded, or just bloody interested in BLOOD.

Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin requests proposals for works to be included in a new exhibition entitled BLOOD. From the subcutaneous to the cultural, BLOOD seeks to investigate to blood across diverse realms of human and post-human endeavour. From cutting edge research in immunology and genetics, to bioart works that use the medium of blood, to mythical stories of vampires, we will explore the materiality of BLOOD through science, medicine, body and bioart, kinship and religious beliefs and its many symbolic and cultural meanings.

We are interested in everything from the internal dynamics of blood cells and their diseases, to themes such as racism, eugenics, bio-politics, popular cultural tropes such as vampires, gender, performance, ritual and religion.

Why do we love vampires but fear needles? Why do we ‘see red’ when our blood ‘boils’? What are the positives and negatives of our fascination with this crimson, coagulating oxygen carrier? Coursing in our veins, blood connects, sustains and fuels life, yet it also harbours disease and infection. It fascinates and it is feared, floating between transcendence and abjection.

We kindly invite you to contribute to this exciting project and let different disciplines bleed into one another. We are out for blood!

IN PARTICULAR WE WELCOME PROPOSALS:

– on blood, i.e. exploring blood via conceptual, polemic and textual inquiry.
– made with/from blood, i.e. exploring blood via artworks employing blood as a medium, such as paintings, performance and body art.
– on blood on film: i.e. exploring representations of blood in film.
made in/of blood, i.e. bio-artistic manipulations of blood at the discrete level.
– exploring the Health/Physiology/Disease of blood – its properties, diseases, circulation. We are especially interested in serology, haematology and pathology; blood count, transfusions, blood types and blood vessels; logistics of storing and donating blood.
– exploring blood as a source of genetic material.
foregrounding the Baroque celebration of blood and the Gothic ominous blood; Baroque rapture and Gothic rupture.
– on bloody hell!, i.e. foregrounding various psychological and psychosomatic effects of blood: catharsis, uncanniness, abjection.
– investigating the tension between blood as a biological substance and a cultural entity.
– investigating the often contradictory cultural meanings of blood.
– on life-blood, i.e. exploring blood as a life-giving substance, marker of individuality, a basic life force, token of the sacred. We are interested in both forensics and religious doctrines on blood.
– on one blood, i.e. exploring blood as the common denominator, token of communal bonds and social solidarity. We seek to explore blood as a ritual, seen through the lens of anthropology and ethnography. Last but not least, we would like to draw attention to the altruistic premise behind blood banks and blood donations.
– on bad blood, mixed blood, blue blood, i.e. exploring blood as a token of difference, boundary, otherness – associated with gender, race, religion, nationalism and social class. We welcome proposals which foreground blood-based nationalism as a source of conflict and displacement. We would also like to hear proposals exploring the prejudice behind blood libel accusations in Eastern Europe.
– investigating the bio-political aspect of blood as an exploitable commodity embodying social and political tensions whereby the very integrity of the human body is at stake and subject to state power. We are interested in submissions harnessing the captivating power of pop cultural tropes such as vampires.
on future blood, i.e. looking towards the future of the human body; investigating the role of blood in new posthuman landscapes of the future; producing self-mutating assemblages of the organic, the inanimate and the technological.
– on non-human blood e.g vertebrates vs invertebrates, unusual blood such as horseshoe crabs

Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal Competition 2014 Now Open for Entries

Deadline: Friday, 26 September 2014, 5.00pm

RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, Casla, CO GALWAY

The competition for the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal 2014 is now open to entries.  This year’s competition is for fiddle, and closing date is 26 September.

The Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal 2013 was won by Kerry concertina player Cormac Begley at the final held in Cork in February.  As well as the medal, he also won a cash prize of €2000.

The competition, now in its fifth year, was initiated by musician and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta presenter Peadar Ó Riada on his radio programme Cuireadh chun Ceoil because he felt that there was far too much emphasis on technique and ornamentation in traditional music competitions these days.  In this competition judges deem character, spirit and musicality as being equally as important as technical proficiency.

To enter, musicians should record 5 pieces of music and upload them to www.cuireadhchunceoil.ie, or alternatively burn them to CD and send them to Peadar Ó Riada.  Full details are on the website.  Those intending to enter are advised to do so as soon as possible, rather than waiting for the closing date.

15 musicians will be shortlisted, and they will take part in a concert in February in the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork, where the winner will be chosen.

Over the next few months Peadar Ó Riada will play some of the entries to the competition on his weekly traditional music programme Cuireadh chun Ceoil on Raidió na Gaeltachta on Fridays at 7 pm.  Listeners can also register with the website www.cuireadhchunceoil.ie to hear the entries.

Competition Announced for Choreographers and Directors of Physical Theatre
"HAMLET" Shakespeare performance production with Russian professional actors at the Russian repertory theatre.
The project is open to participants from different countries.
Participants who successfully finish the programme can receive the Certificate.

Exhibiting at Turn-berlin
Turn-berlin is an artist funded space, with a large gallery in the middle of the biggest concentration of art in Europe. We are working to find the most effective ways of progressing an artists name and reputation. By introducing a more integrated approach we can be more effective and develop wider opportunities.
The intense experience of showing work in a gallery is the best way to have work seen. To get the most from  exhibiting which can be a relatively short event, to include it as part of a comprehensive package gives more considered exposure. Developing a name is the only way forward, it takes time and a lot of determination. This is why many artists are finding new ways of being seen. If you don’t exhibit you are only doing half of the job, but taking a positive approach to exhibiting should include other forms.
We are now big enough to be a representational gallery offering a full promotional package. More information on turn-berlin’s long term approach to developing artists is on the following link: http://turn-berlin.de/application/index.html
Address: turn-berlin Gallery, Josetti Höfe, Rungestr 22-24, 10179 Berlin, Germany.
Deadline: Open.

Arts Council Launches Major Survey of Irish Harpers

The Arts Council has commissioned a major piece of research into the harp and harping in Ireland and is asking all harpers to fill out an online survey. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday 8 July 2014.

The harp has a particular significance in Ireland, as a national symbol and as a distinctive sound of the country. It has an extraordinarily rich history in Ireland having been played on the island for an estimated one thousand years.

With an increasingly vibrant harp scene, the Arts Council is keen to examine the current state of harping, to identify gaps in provision and explore opportunities for cooperation and development to secure the future of the instrument.

The Arts Council is asking harpers north and south, and of all genres, to fill out the survey and for the public to bring it to the attention of harpers they may know.

Paul Flynn, Head of Traditional Arts at the Arts Council, said ‘This is an important opportunity to document the full breadth and scope of harp playing throughout the island of Ireland. We are fortunate to have such a rich harping history and so many excellent contemporary practitioners. The Arts Council wants to engage as many harpers as possible in this research to guide our work into the future.’

The Council has commissioned Toner Quinn to carry out the research. Quinn was formerly Project Officer for the Special Committee on the Traditional Arts, which produced the report Towards a Policy for the Traditional Arts.

To fill out the survey, please visit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/harpcruit2014

At first things seem to be going according to plan but soon the cracks appear and we witness a bizarre and hilarious unfolding of events. Joe’s past comes back to haunt him while Paddy’s future hangs in the balance. But can he prove himself worthy of the criminal life? Meanwhile the kidnapee, Samantha, presents a whole new set of problems that none of them could possibly foresee.
