Luisne Art Work on display in the Museum of Country Life
The Luisne Arts group, Ballinrobe, have eight vibrant pieces of large scale art work on display in the grounds of the Museum of Country Life, Turlough. The work was installed as part of the Onsight programme of outdoor art installations during this year’s Féile na Tuaithe and will continue to be on display till the end of September. On entering the main gates at the Museum, the work is located on the left hand side in amongst the trees. This outdoor work will withstand whatever the Irish Summer has to offer and we’re hoping it will be more Sun than rain. The theme the artists explored was Traditional Farmhouse Fare with the idea of Farm to Plate; the resulting colourful, skilled work is well worth a visit. The following work is on display: Emer Prendergast’s Stew, Horses and Sheep, John Walsh’s Sheep, Hens and Chicken Dinner, Mairead Coyne’s Donkey, Goats and Hens, Martin O’Reilly’s Carrots and Soup, Patrick Wall’s Cattle and Pigs, Peter Shaugnessy’s Cows and Round Bales, Bridie Lally's Sheep and Lambs andTheresa Dooley’s Dinner on the table.
The Lusine Art Facilitator is artist Breda Murphy and Luisne co-ordinator is Breda Mayock. Luisne is supported by Mayo County Council Arts Office and Western Care with administrative support provided by Tacú, Ballinrobe Family Resource Centre

Feature Film Script Mentoring Programme
The Western Development Commission (WDC) is partnering with the Galway Film Centre to offer a Feature Film Script Mentoring Programme. The aim of the programme is to provide professional script development for six participants over a period of six months, from Treatment stage to a First Draft screenplay, to create a fiction, feature film script (90-110 pages).
The training will involve participation in a workshop process overseen by script supervisor, Mark McIlrath. Workshops will take place over three weekends (Friday to Sunday inclusive) spaced in two-month intervals beginning in September and based in Galway. Participants will have ongoing online access and feedback from the tutor between workshops. The workshops are spread out over a period of months to allow the participants to develop their work and to refine and rewrite their screenplays to deadlines
Participants will be selected on the basis of a Treatment and a short CV to be submitted to Galway Film Centre by July 31st 2014. To apply for this programme participants must be based in one of the seven western counties: Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon, Galway or Clare. The Treatment should be a maximum of five pages and outline the main characters in the film, how their story develops and the key relationships within their story. Full details on the application process are available here
The WDC is a regional development agency promoting the economic and social development of the Western Region. It actively supports the region’s creative sector through the WDC Micro-Loan Fund for Creative Industries and MyCreativeEdge.
The workshops will mentor six participants from the region in the craft of screenwriting. Central to this process is that all participants are exposed to each other’s work, are privy to the feedback given in each case and the continued re-drafting and progress of each participant’s work. Mark McIlrath is a film script editor and tutor with 15 years experience of working with screenwriters and producers in Ireland, Europe and the US. Recent films that he has worked on include Silence and Run & Jump.

THE IRISH WRITER EIMEAR MCBRIDE HAS WON THE BAILEYS BOOK PRIZE FOR HER FIRST NOVEL, A GIRL IS A HALF-FORMED THING,
The Irish writer Eimear McBride has won the Baileys book prize for her first novel, A Girl is a Half-formed Thing, beating bookie's favourite Donna Tartt's gigantic third novel, The Goldfinch.
Although Tartt was tipped from the start for her 771-pager, it was McBride's dark family tale, written in the hurtling, comma-free voice of an unnamed narrator, that won over the judges of the women's prize for fiction, formerly the Orange prize.
The chair of the judging panel, Helen Fraser, a former managing director of Penguin Books, said: "This has been a fantastic year for women's fiction, as the quality of both the long and shortlist made clear, and I think what has emerged as the worthy winner is a really original new voice."
McBride was hailed as "that old-fashioned thing, a genius" by fellow Irish novelist Anne Enright. Her story of a girl's life in the shadow of sexual abuse and the brain tumour of a beloved brother took six months to write and many years to get published.
McBride had accumulated a hefty pile of rejection slips, and the manuscript had gone into the back of a drawer, when a conversation between her theatre director husband and a bookshop owner in their adopted home city, Norwich, led to its becoming one of the launch titles of the small independent press Galley Beggar.
By the time Faber & Faber took up the paperback rights, A Girl was already scooping up rave reviews and awards, including the €15,000 (£12,000) Irish novel of the year award and the first Goldsmiths prize for "boldly original fiction". It is shortlisted for the Folio prize.
Fraser said several publishers would be kicking themselves. "It is an amazing book. Publishers do make mistakes, and I can only imagine that some may have read the first two or three pages and thought, 'No, this is too difficult.' But once you get beyond that, we found it utterly engaging, readable, unputdownable. The style is no obstacle."
She said the final judging session quickly came down to two books, the second of which she discreetly declined to name.
"Very early on Eimear stood out from the crowd. We all put ourselves into purdah to reread the shortlisted books but it was only when we started cautiously exchanging emails in the past week that we realised what a strong contender it was. It took us one hour to get the shortlist down to two books, and the remaining three hours to decide between them – but this is a truly worthy winner."
It was perhaps a hint to the hall of what was coming that while all the other authors turned up, Tartt was represented at the ceremony by her UK agent.
Snuffling a little if not quite weeping, McBride said of her triumph: "I hope it will serve as an incentive to publishers everywhere to take a look at difficult books and think again. We are all writers but we are all readers first. There is a contract between publishers and readers which must be honoured, readers can not be underestimated."
Sam Jordison, co-founder of the tiny Galley Beggar press (and of the wildly successful Crap Towns books), was elated. "It's not an easy read but it is an incredible one. I find it hard to believe so many other publishers didn't see that."
McBride was a popular winner: there were whoops and cheers when Fraser announced that hers was the book that got the judges "talking and thinking and arguing".
At the traditional eve-of-prize public reading by the authors, Fraser was struck by the audience response to McBride. "There was a great roar when she stood up, and it was immediately apparent how many people, men and women, had read the book and really loved it. She will be an immensely popular winner."
McBride is already well into her next book, and unlikely to have any problem at all getting it published. "I am quite sure this is the beginning of a major career," Fraser said.
Born in Liverpool in 1976, McBride was brought up in the west of Ireland, trained as an actor, and now lives in Norwich with her daughter and husband, William Galinksy, who had the fortuitous conversation with Henry Layte, owner of the Book Hive shop and co-founder of Galley Beggar.
McBride's was one of two Irish first novels to make the shortlist, with Audrey Magee's second world war story, The Undertaking, the other. Several big names fell out at the longlist stage, including the veteran Canadian author Margaret Atwood. Tartt, who seemed to lead the pack from the start, won the then Orange prize in 2003 for her second novel, The Little Friend, and has the considerable consolation prize for her latest that it has just won the Pulitzer prize.
Although A Girl is a Half-formed Thing won almost unanimous praise from literary critics, it has divided readers, and has the lowest Amazon star rating of any of the shortlisted books. In a comma-free snarl, one reader wrote: "Bad bad bad book."
RE-LAUNCH OF RESIDENCY PROGRAMME AT IMMA
The IrishMuseum of Modern Art has announced the re-launch of the Residency Programme at IMMA. The Residency Programme reopens with refreshed studio spaces and living quarters and a full schedule of activities for 2014. IMMA’s Residency Programme has supported more than 250 artists and projects from 50 countries worldwide for nearly 20 years.
This month the Residency Programme will accept new applications for the 2014/2015 Programme, approximately 10 residencies will be awarded. The application process is an important opportunity for Irish and international arts practitioners to showcase their practice to IMMA. The selection panel comprises an international curator, an established artist and key programming staff at IMMA. The last open call generated more than 1,000 applications from around the world.
In addition to the open call for residencies IMMA has developed new programmes offering opportunities for arts practitioners at various stages of their career. This year will see the introduction of a 12-month studio award for a selected artist/project from Ireland, and a studio award for a recent graduate – this will be a shorter residency aimed at emerging artists, providing a chance to work alongside an exciting mix of national and international artists.
The Residency Programme will also continue to invite arts practitioners nominated through professional recommendations from partner institutions, independent projects and affiliated curators. So far this year IMMA has supported projects with Temple Bar Galleries + Studios, Project Arts Centre, EVA International, the RHA, MART and the Goethe-Institut, Dublin. In collaboration with NCAD, it is also hosting a visiting research fellow, art historian and critic Nuit Banai who has written for Artforum and Art Papers.
The development of international partnerships with established residencies and institutions overseas is also at the forefront of IMMA’s objectives – with the aim to generate more mobility for arts practitioners based in Ireland. Inviting international curators for short research trips to connect with artists and projects is another developing aspect of the residency.
Upcoming participants for 2014 include: Becca Albee, Özlem Altin, Nicholas Byrne, Amanda Coogan, Priscila Fernandes, Fischer + el Sani, David Horvitz, Mee Ping Leung, Antonia Low, Deborah Luster, Nastio Mosquito, Vittorio Santoro, Naomi Sex, Edward Clydesdale Thompson, Nick Thurston and Lee Welch – with further guests and projects to be confirmed throughout the year.
In July the Project Spaces will support ongoing research and studio practices of selected residential artists. Unseen Presence creates a chance for artists to work directly in response to the institution, their environment and IMMA’s public. The exhibition will continue until late August.

WRITERS' RESIDENCY WEEK
Tin Jug Studio, Birr, County Offaly
October 2014
Applications are sought for a new Writers' Residency in the Midlands of Ireland. This residency-cum-retreat is in the Georgian heritage town of Birr. The opportunity is for professional writers who are seeking a short break from daily routines; it is for those who feel the need to re-invigorate themselves into completing current work; and it is also for writers who may simply need inspiration, through a change of place and stimuli. www.tinjugstudio.com
The Location
The location is a period guest house with an arts studio and courtyard garden. Tin Jug Studio is a local hub for artists’ gatherings, workshops and talks. Whilst it is in the heart of a busy rural town during the daytime, stepping in through the front door, beyond the high walls there is a peacefulness of atmosphere. It also has the advantage of being minutes from BirrCastle's tranquil gardens and lovely walks in the countryside.
What is Included: The bursary includes one week's accommodation in one of the period rooms of the guest house with breakfast and evening communal supper.
Length of Stay: 6 nights / 7 days
Optional Dates: Between the 3rd and 25th October, 2014
Facilities: WiFi internet connections throughout and a small writing table in each of the bedrooms and an elegant drawing room with a writing desk. Herbal teas and biscuits are available in the guest area at all times. Or writers may prefer to work in the studio or gallery or nearby library.
The Town & Environs
Birr is a thriving cultural town with a delightful theatre and arts centre and the Historic Science Centre at BirrCastle. During its long history, many of its inhabitants have made their lasting mark nationally and internationally; from science to religion and from motor racing to architecture. There are cycling routes and within short car drives there are magical old castles and ancient monastic sites to be visited, as well as nature reserves, inspirational gentle mountains and boglands. There are a number of excellent cafés, each with their own specialities, as well as a good bistro and restaurants.
GETTING THERE
Birr is in South Offaly, in the heart of Ireland. It is recommended to come by car in order to have the option of exploring the area around Birr. However, it is on the Kearns Bus and Bus Éireann routes. The closest train stations are at Tullamore and Roscrea. Transport costs are the writers’ own.
WHO MAY APPLY?
The residency bursary is open to professional published writers of any genre such as literary fiction, poetry, playwrights, journalism or travel writing. There are three places available, for newly published or experienced writers from across the 32 counties.
Note:
This pilot residency is being sponsored by Offaly County Council's Arts Office, to help develop the concept further. At or after the finish of the week's retreat, the inaugural writers’ in residence will be asked to provide some feedback so that we can continue to develop this concept further.

WICKLOW COUNTY ARTS OFFICE & COUNTY WICKLOW FILM COMMISSION
WICKLOW COUNTY COUNCIL
CALL FOR WICKED FILM PROJECT PROPOSAL ENGAGING YOUNG PEOPLE
Brief - 2014
Closing Date: Wednesday 25th June @ 12 Noon
For enquires please contact Liz Kelly: lizculloty.45@gmail.com or liz.kelly@ul.ie
Wicklow County Arts Office and County Wicklow Film Commission would like to invite filmmaker/s working in any context to submit for a project opportunity to work with young people in CountyWicklow. The successful filmmaker/s will propose a project model, which will work with young people either over a period of months or in a concentrated period of weeks within 2014. During this time the filmmaker/s will engage with young people in the experience of developing a film (group to be indicated in proposal) on their proposed project. The available budget for the opportunity is €8,000 to cover three components: fees, outcomes and materials. Please note that while we are seeking expressions of interest from either one filmmaker or a group of filmmakers in the case that there is a sole applicant filmmaker, that party should budget for an assistant producer / supervisor to be present at all stages of the project during the engagement of young people. Alternatively, the group proposed may be in a position to provide this support.
The project must realise a film initiative with young people (min 16 participants) in CountyWicklow. The applicant filmmaker/s may propose where, when and how the project will take place. It is up to the applicant to propose a group of youth with which to work. This can be proposed in a school, community or youth setting. Alternatively, the project could be proposed as a summer school initiative.
Applicants must propose an idea for a script / storyboard and then propose how they would collaborate with the young people to develop a short or short film series over the course of the project.
Wicklow County Arts Office and County Wicklow Film Commission are open to the many ways in which the filmmaker/s may select to work with the young people during the course of the residency in documentary, animation, fiction etc. Through this application process we are asking applicants to complete the attached application form clearly outlining the following:
What they aim to achieve during the project
How they propose to work with young people, relative to their own practice
What amount of contact time is proposed weekly/for the duration of the project
Any outcomes envisaged
How documentation will be managed
Background: About the Previous Wicked Film Programmes
Wicklow County Council and County Wicklow Film Commission have had a long history of working with young people through film. Following two film residency initiatives, the WICKED Young Filmmakers Training Programme was established. This model worked as a week long summer course where young people aged between 12 and 16 years learned how to write, direct, act shoot and edit a film and also produce animated shorts. The following are you-tube links to samples of the shorts created in the last number of years. http://www.pureproject.ie/what-we-do/pure-animation-movies/
What we would like to do in 2014, is to commission a project under this call which will give young people either, a film residency, project or summer school experience. It is intended that the young people will learn first hand how to develop material for film, to participate in its creation (including acting if relevant i.e. not in the case of animation) and assist in the editing process.
On Selecting a Group
Participants must be within the age range of between 12 – 16 years. A group can be made up of any combination of ages within that range (i.e. mixed age group or 13/14 year old group etc.)
Applicants may select to work with any of the following within Wicklow:
An arts organisation
An arts venue
A community group
A school (secondary)
A youth group
A youth project
Please note it is essential in the context of the application that you demonstrate that you have consulted with the group or organisation chosen and that the project is feasible in partnership with them. A letter of support is also required from the group / organisation proposed in support of your application.

ENN STATE IRELAND SUMMER ABROAD PROGRAM 2014 ARE PLEASED TO PRESENT A PUBLIC READING BY POET PAUL DURCAN AT GIELTY'S CLEW BAY BAR & RESTAURANT DOOAGH ACHILL ON TUESDAY NEXT JUNE 10TH AT 8.00PM.
This event is open to the community and all interested are invited to attend - admission free – no advance booking necessary .
Paul Durcan will read from his most recent publications LIFE IS A DREAM 40 YEARS READING POEMS 1967 – 2007 and PRAISE IN WHICH I LIVE AND MOVE AND HAVE MY BEING.
Regarded by many as the great poet of contemporary Ireland, Durcan poetry has recently contemplated the fall of the Celtic Tiger, while railing against bankers and 'bonus boys'. There are poems of love lost and won, and poems in memory of friends and relatives who have passed on, but there is also joy to be found in the birth of a grandson, and there is praise, too, for the modest heroism of truckers, air traffic controllers and nurses, those 'slim, sturdy, buxom nourishers' of fallen mankind.
Paul Durcan is one of Ireland's foremost poets. He was born in Dublin in 1944. His first book, Endsville (1967), has been followed by more than twenty others, including The Berlin Wall Café (a Poetry Book Society Choice in 1985), Daddy, Daddy (winner of the Whitbread Award for Poetry in 1990), A Snail in My Prime: New and Selected Poems (1993), Cries of an Irish Caveman: New Poems (2001), The Art of Life (2004) and The Laughter of Mothers (2008). In 2009 he published a selection of his work from the previous forty years in one volume, Life is a Dream. In 2001 Paul Durcan received a Cholmondeley Award. He was the Ireland Professor of Poetry 2004-2007. In 2009 he was conferred with an honorary degree by TrinityCollege, Dublin. He is a member of Aosdána.
ST PATRICK'S DRAMA GROUP AT THE LINENHALL!!
After 7 sell-out performances in Westport, St Patricks Drama Group Westport are delighted to announce 2 extra dates for their sell-out 3 Act comedy "Pretend Sick" by Michael Joe Ginnelly - Wednesday & Thursday 18th & 19th June 2014 at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar. The group are very excited as this is the first time they will tread the boards in the intimate setting of the Linenhall Arts Centre. Formed in 1964 as a voluntary group, providing live amateur theatre to many audiences locally, nationally and internationally, they are enjoying marking their 50th year with a series of excellent plays and key events all through 2014 and for years to come!
This lively, convivial 3 Act comedy is a welcome follow-up to the box office hit "A Wake in The West" which saw immense success for the Westport players both locally, nationally and internationally with over 30 sell-out performances by this group alone.
The story centres around Katie, the manipulative and malingering mother to Mary, who pretends to be sick in a bid to ensure her daughter stays at home to look after her and Marys' brooding brother Seán.
Mary could probably cope with this, if only Mammys-boy Martin, with whom she is courting for ten years now, was more spontaneous and less of a wimp!
However, the arrival of Matt - the Handsome, educated and enigmatic gentleman turns Marys head from her mundane life and throws a spanner in the works for everyone - especially Katie!
Throw into the mix newly weds Tracey & Jack, Seans dubious drinking buddies Joe & Mick and their dallying dolly-birds Marian & Sandra and you have another hilarious farce from the author of international box office smash hit “A Wake in the West”.
The fiesty cast for this play include: Regina McCormack, Liam McNamara, Nuala Currid, Mairéad Ryan, Patsy Staunton, Brendan Carroll, Micheál McGreal, Roger Hughes, John Gavin, Grace O'Malley & Marion Moran. It is Produced by Liz Browne and Directed by Michael Hughes. Curtain up nightly at 8pm sharp. BOOK your tickets €12 directly with the Linenhall (094) 902 3733 or book online www.thelinenhall.com. Don't miss this cracker of a play!!!
