Galway Film Fleadh Pitching Competition
The Galway Film Fleadh, Ireland's leading film festival, is delighted to announce a call for entries for the new-look Pitching Competition.
Ireland's only film-pitching competition our aim is to encourage budding writers with ideas (at any stage of development) to get their vision out there and to develop the crucial craft of 'the pitch'. In the film industry, 'the pitch' is how you impart your passion for your project to others. It doesn't matter how good your idea is as a writer unless you can convince a director, producer, or financiers of its merits.
Since its inception in 2005, The Galway Film Fleadh Pitching Award has challenged writers and provided a platform them to share their ideas with their peers. In 2010 the Fleadh was proud to open with Paul Fraser's My Brothers, which began life a mere three years earlier as a pitch by writer Will Collins. Success at the Pitching compeition acted as a springboard for Collins' project and the film went on to secure funding from the Film board. My Brothers subsequently went on to feature at festivals around the world, including New York's Tribeca and Will is currently co-writing the follow-up to the Oscar-nominated Secret of Kells with director Tomm Moore.
Closing date is Friday 6th June.
Entry forms and guidelines available from www.galwayfilmfleadh.com.

BABY BEEF INDEPENDENT ART PRESS | CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

We did this to give ourselves and people like us an outlet and platform for our work to be seen, outside of a gallery setting. To not wait around for people to discover us but to do it ourselves. We released 3 issues before branching off to do other publications, artist books and projects. In those 3 issues we published artists from all over the world, distributed them globally by sending them to the contributors and bringing them travelling with us.
We have decided to make Baby BEEF Issue 4 this summer and launch it at this years 4th Annual Dublin Zine Fair in August.
We are looking of submissions of art, poetry, stories and articles. We celebrate the handmade and love anything analogue, so we are not looking for digital artwork. Pretty much anything goes. If you have any questions let us know.

Im/Plants
Im/Plants proposes a programme of seasonal implantations (insertions) into the National Sculpture Factory. This project is open to Irish and international artists, curators, independent art groups, individual cultural and spatial practitioners, and collectives across all art disciplines.
Artists/participants are implanted as productive agents, that is, invited to respond to the specificity of the National Sculpture Factory - as a site for manufacture; as a host organism; as a seedbed for propagation - in order to test, affect or re-imagine the boundaries of what the art organisation can be through alternative forms of production.
Each implant is of a 3-month duration and is programmed to happen seasonally. It is self-directing and self-sufficient, with an overall stipend of €3,000 and with access to the full resources and supports of the NSF, adapted to the needs of each specific applicant.
There are no prescribed outcomes, but each implant is expected to leave a trace, residue, or shadow, of their period of interactivity with the host organisation. Such outcomes are not restricted to the ephemeral and can be of a more permanent nature.
For its part the NSF will be openly receptive to the unknowns made possible by interaction with these implanted agents.
The Im/Plants strand in the NSF’s annual programme is designed to act as a source of imaginative hybridization, to create as yet unknown forms of production or provocation, and enable the NSF to work with the broadest range of artistic practitioners, leading to the synthesis of new ideas and work practices within the artist-centric institution.
NSF Im/Plants project allows the implanted artists to practically challenge the ideologies of the monolithic or static institution, and to act instead as a generative substrate engaging directly with the receptive NSF to external forces. In its making available of its resources, experience and network of relations, the NSF wishes, through these insertions open itself to the stimulus of new ideas, alien influences and new creative productive outcomes.
Application Details:
Criteria for assessment:
The nature and quality of the proposition or provocation.
Experience relevant to this particular site-specific research implantation.
The feasibility of each proposition as well as the nature and extent of the research and methodology being proposed
Applicants are invited to propose, themselves; their practice and their particular Im/plant proposal in whatever form they deem relevant bearing in mind the considerations above and the context being offered.
Applicants can develop proposals for Im/plants with the understanding that they need not be present, or resident in Cork for the entire 3-monthly season. This is not a studio-based residency, while a space in the NSF can be made available if necessary. Applicants should suggest how they propose to proceed over the 3-month period and how this can lead to a constructive and productive engagement.

Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal Competition 2014 Now Open for Entries
Deadline: Friday, 26 September 2014, 5.00pm
RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, Casla, CO GALWAY
The competition for the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal 2014 is now open to entries. This year’s competition is for fiddle, and closing date is 26 September.
The Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal 2013 was won by Kerry concertina player Cormac Begley at the final held in Cork in February. As well as the medal, he also won a cash prize of €2000.
The competition, now in its fifth year, was initiated by musician and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta presenter Peadar Ó Riada on his radio programme Cuireadh chun Ceoil because he felt that there was far too much emphasis on technique and ornamentation in traditional music competitions these days. In this competition judges deem character, spirit and musicality as being equally as important as technical proficiency.
To enter, musicians should record 5 pieces of music and upload them to www.cuireadhchunceoil.ie, or alternatively burn them to CD and send them to Peadar Ó Riada. Full details are on the website. Those intending to enter are advised to do so as soon as possible, rather than waiting for the closing date.
15 musicians will be shortlisted, and they will take part in a concert in February in the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork, where the winner will be chosen.
Over the next few months Peadar Ó Riada will play some of the entries to the competition on his weekly traditional music programme Cuireadh chun Ceoil on Raidió na Gaeltachta on Fridays at 7 pm. Listeners can also register with the website www.cuireadhchunceoil.ie to hear the entries.
Competition Announced for Choreographers and Directors of Physical Theatre

BLOOD at Science Gallery | Call For Proposals
Calling all artists, scientists, and designers: hot-blooded, blue-blooded, or just bloody interested in BLOOD.
Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin requests proposals for works to be included in a new exhibition entitled BLOOD. From the subcutaneous to the cultural, BLOOD seeks to investigate to blood across diverse realms of human and post-human endeavour. From cutting edge research in immunology and genetics, to bioart works that use the medium of blood, to mythical stories of vampires, we will explore the materiality of BLOOD through science, medicine, body and bioart, kinship and religious beliefs and its many symbolic and cultural meanings.
We are interested in everything from the internal dynamics of blood cells and their diseases, to themes such as racism, eugenics, bio-politics, popular cultural tropes such as vampires, gender, performance, ritual and religion.
Why do we love vampires but fear needles? Why do we ‘see red’ when our blood ‘boils’? What are the positives and negatives of our fascination with this crimson, coagulating oxygen carrier? Coursing in our veins, blood connects, sustains and fuels life, yet it also harbours disease and infection. It fascinates and it is feared, floating between transcendence and abjection.
We kindly invite you to contribute to this exciting project and let different disciplines bleed into one another. We are out for blood!
IN PARTICULAR WE WELCOME PROPOSALS:
– on blood, i.e. exploring blood via conceptual, polemic and textual inquiry.
– made with/from blood, i.e. exploring blood via artworks employing blood as a medium, such as paintings, performance and body art.
– on blood on film: i.e. exploring representations of blood in film.
made in/of blood, i.e. bio-artistic manipulations of blood at the discrete level.
– exploring the Health/Physiology/Disease of blood – its properties, diseases, circulation. We are especially interested in serology, haematology and pathology; blood count, transfusions, blood types and blood vessels; logistics of storing and donating blood.
– exploring blood as a source of genetic material.
foregrounding the Baroque celebration of blood and the Gothic ominous blood; Baroque rapture and Gothic rupture.
– on bloody hell!, i.e. foregrounding various psychological and psychosomatic effects of blood: catharsis, uncanniness, abjection.
– investigating the tension between blood as a biological substance and a cultural entity.
– investigating the often contradictory cultural meanings of blood.
– on life-blood, i.e. exploring blood as a life-giving substance, marker of individuality, a basic life force, token of the sacred. We are interested in both forensics and religious doctrines on blood.
– on one blood, i.e. exploring blood as the common denominator, token of communal bonds and social solidarity. We seek to explore blood as a ritual, seen through the lens of anthropology and ethnography. Last but not least, we would like to draw attention to the altruistic premise behind blood banks and blood donations.
– on bad blood, mixed blood, blue blood, i.e. exploring blood as a token of difference, boundary, otherness – associated with gender, race, religion, nationalism and social class. We welcome proposals which foreground blood-based nationalism as a source of conflict and displacement. We would also like to hear proposals exploring the prejudice behind blood libel accusations in Eastern Europe.
– investigating the bio-political aspect of blood as an exploitable commodity embodying social and political tensions whereby the very integrity of the human body is at stake and subject to state power. We are interested in submissions harnessing the captivating power of pop cultural tropes such as vampires.
on future blood, i.e. looking towards the future of the human body; investigating the role of blood in new posthuman landscapes of the future; producing self-mutating assemblages of the organic, the inanimate and the technological.
– on non-human blood e.g vertebrates vs invertebrates, unusual blood such as horseshoe crabs

The Lime Tree Theatre/Limerick City and Council: Programme Funding – Call for Interest
The Lime Tree Theatre has been awarded funding from the Arts Council of €100,000 for the year April 1st 2014 to March 31st 2015. The award is for the programming of the performing and visual arts in Limerick city venues to support the making of work by local practitioners and towards developing a strategic approach to programming of venues. The funding is a continued partnership between the venue and LimerickCity and County Council to ensure a professional arts programme is presented in the city.
This will be, in effect, the continuation of the interim Limerick Arts Encounter, whereby a sum of €120,000 was spent on programming in the city over a period of six months from October 2013 to March 2014. The new amount represents a cut in funding to the city, but the Lime Tree and LimerickCity and County Council will endeavour to continue to present as full and high quality a programme as possible, augmented by the provision of new office facilities in 69 O’Connell Street.
As before, some of the work presented will be by touring companies in both the Lime Tree Theatre and the former Belltable, and some will be by Limerick based practitioners in the Lime Tree, the former Belltable or other venues in the city as preferred.
If you wish to be included in the programme, please fill out the Expression of Interest form and return to Louise Donlon at the Lime Tree Theatre or Sheila Deegan at LimerickCity and County Council with details of your proposal which should include:
Please bear in mind that there will be significant demand on relatively limited funds, so competition will be extremely high. Programming will be chosen based on Arts Council criteria – high quality work undertaken by full time, professional artists.
Expression of Interest Form - Expression_of_interest_Programming_funding
Expressions of interest should be made to Louise Donlon at the Lime Tree Theatre, MaryImmaculateCollege, Limerick.
Email: louise@limetreetheatre.ie. There is no specific deadline, but please bear in mind that once the limited funding available is allocated, there will be no further funds available.

Exhibiting at Turn-berlin
Turn-berlin is an artist funded space, with a large gallery in the middle of the biggest concentration of art in Europe. We are working to find the most effective ways of progressing an artists name and reputation. By introducing a more integrated approach we can be more effective and develop wider opportunities.
The intense experience of showing work in a gallery is the best way to have work seen. To get the most from exhibiting which can be a relatively short event, to include it as part of a comprehensive package gives more considered exposure. Developing a name is the only way forward, it takes time and a lot of determination. This is why many artists are finding new ways of being seen. If you don’t exhibit you are only doing half of the job, but taking a positive approach to exhibiting should include other forms.
We are now big enough to be a representational gallery offering a full promotional package. More information on turn-berlin’s long term approach to developing artists is on the following link: http://turn-berlin.de/application/index.html
Address: turn-berlin Gallery, Josetti Höfe, Rungestr 22-24, 10179 Berlin, Germany.
Deadline: Open.

New service for VAI Members - International Studio Exchange with fellow artists around the world
We are pleased to announce a new service available to paid members of Visual Artists Ireland. In partnership with Artquest, VAI has negotiated places for members on their Artelier international studio exchange. Artelier is for professional visual artists to arrange free studio exchanges with their peers anywhere in the world.
Membership of Artelier is by 'invitation only' to ensure it is only used by professional visual artists and is safe for members. Members can request an invitation by contacting us through our Artelier webpages.
This is a great opportunity to meet fellow artists around the world and potentially find artists with studios looking to exchange with the city you live in. You can also find and arrange free accommodation or a studio on holiday or when working overseas, or indeed, find someone to look after your studio or apartment while you are away.
Artelier keeps your exact location and personal contact information private until you choose to let individual artists know where you are.
