About to be married to a very suitable young man, 18-year-old Shira’s situation takes an unexpected turn after her older sister dies in childbirth, leaving her Rabbi husband and the surviving infant. Set in Tel Aviv in an Orthodox Hasidic family, the film follows Shira as she negotiates the labyrinth of familial pressure, religious precedent, and her own burgeoning sentiment, her goal of ‘a good match’ especially complicated by a grief-stricken mother who has more than her daughter’s happiness in mind. Orthodox Jewish American writer-director Rama Burshtein investigates the complexities of her own community without judgement in this bravura debut feature, with a mesmerising central performance by Hadas Yaron.
