Whether you’re an individual artist or managing a venue, a performing arts freelancer or working in a funded arts organisation, this year’s conference is about your concerns and our community.  It's time for hard truths, some imaginative thinking but most of all, about creating a platform, where despite and because of our varied interests and experiences, we can come together.

The Lime Tree Theatre is the main conference venue. Limerick City of Culture 2014 will host an evening reception in the Kerry Group Cleeve's Factory, home to EVA International – Ireland’s Biennial, followed by the evening programme in the City’s historic Milk Market. OSCAILTE

Saturday May 10th

11am - 6pm

‘OSCAILTE’ 2014 is the second annual open studio event which aims to encourage the general public and recent art graduates alike to visit working artists’ studios in Galway City.

It is a chance to see first-hand the day-to-day activities of artists’ spaces and to meet the artists involved. This year’s participating studios are Engage Art Studios, Galway Arts Centre, Forge Clay Studios, 126 Artist-run Gallery, The Loft & Artspace Studios.

These six artists’ studios are situated across Galway City and cater to over fifty visual artists. Studio spaces are housed in various buildings ranging from city centre converted office space to a 19th Century old Cathedral building to commercial units in present day industrial estates. It is in these spaces that Galway artists create artworks that are shown locally, nationally and internationally in various galleries and art centres. OSCAILTE invites you to visit these spaces, talk to the artists and see how their work is produced.

On Saturday May 10th all studios will be open to visitors from 11am to 6pm. The OSCAILTE map can help you plan your route while the OSCAILTE bus will be running during the afternoon to both Artspace Studios and The Loft – times TBC shortly.

The diverse group of artists working in these various studio spaces contribute hugely to the rich cultural life of Galway City and OSCAILTE encourages you to drop by, have a chat, possibly a cup of tea and find out what really happens in your local artists’ studio!

This is a free public event and for further information find us on FB and Twitter.

OSCAILTE is kindly supported by Galway City Council and ADAPT Galway.

CATCH THE HE(ART) – A TRAVELING RESIDENCY

BEALTAINE FESTIVAL - CELEBRATING CREATIVITY AS WE AGE

Curated by MICHELLE BROWNE

GALWAY ARTS CENTRE - Exhibition of works 20 – 24 May, Seminar Tuesday 20th, 6pm

CATCH THE HE(ART) is a traveling residency that invites four artists, PATRICIA HURL, MARY KELLY, JAMES KING and THERRY RUDIN, to come together over the month of May to explore their motivation to continue making work in later life. CATCH THE HE(ART) offers this group of artists the time and space to reflect, debate and present on their attitudes to, and ways of, making art in older age.  These four artists continue to experiment and challenge their arts practices and this residency will celebrate this continual experimentation and passion in art making.

Three seminars will be held during the residency where the artists will publicly share their thoughts on these topics, while presenting their current working practices. At GALWAY ARTS CENTRE, curator of the Dock Arts Centre, Leitrim, ALICE LYONS will chair a discussion with the artists. The Discussion is open to the public and all are welcome.

Born Dublin, PATRICIA HURL now lives and works in Co. Offaly and Barcelona. She has exhibited widely and has engaged in art residencies in Ireland, Spain, South Africa, the USA and Iceland. As well as the traditional art forms, she has engaged in Participatory Art and has an ongoing interlinked practice with the artist Therry Rudin, which is Performance/Video/Sound based.

MARY KELLY lives and works in Ireland. She has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally.  Recent exhibitions include The Landing, Dusseldorf Photo week-end, Dock Art Fair Leon with Galerie Voss 2013, Father & Child (solo show), Galerie Voss, Düsseldorf  ‘12, Atelier + Kitchen – Laboratories of the Senses, Martha Herford Museum, Herford ’12. She is the recipient of many awards including Irish American Arts Award in New York 2006. Her work is installation based using photography, video, sound, sculpture, drawing and painting.

JAMES KING has been practicing performance in various forms for thirty-five years and has lectured in Community Drama for thirty of these. During the past ten years he has been expanding his performance art experience; ranging from short, open-mic word-play entertainments to more substantial durational events often incorporating vocal experimentation.

THERRY RUDIN was born in Switzerland and has lived in Germany, USA, Brazil and in Ireland since 1985. She now lives in Ballybritt, Co Offaly and Barcelona. She has exhibited widely in Ireland, Switzerland, Brazil, USA and Iceland; she works and exhibits regularly in collaboration with the artist Patricia Hurl. We work individually but in tandem, drawing strength from each other and responding to each other’s work with immediacy that results in Video/ Performance work.

ALICE LYONS is a writer with an interest in bringing poetry to new contexts and media. Her poems have appeared in publications such as Tygodnik Powszcheny (Kraków) and POETRY (Chicago) and as poetry films in cinema and gallery screenings worldwide. She is the recipient of the Patrick Kavanagh Award for Poetry, the Ireland Chair of Poetry Bursary and bursaries in literature and film from An Chomhairle Ealoine/The Arts Council. Her poetry film, The Polish Language, co-directed with Orla Mc Hardy, has screened in competition in over 50 film festivals worldwide and garnered numerous awards including an IFTA nomination for Best Animated Short.  She is currently a doctoral candidate at the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry at Queen's University in Belfast.

This project is supported by Age & Opportunity as part of Bealtaine 2014 – celebrating creativity as we age.

Making Stories: Creating Space - Dublin Writers Festival - Friday May 23

Be inspired by innovative approaches to making space and programming for children and young people’s engagement with literature and the arts.

Seven Stories is one of just a few places in the world dedicated to the art of children’s books. They attract some of the biggest names in children’s literature to reveal the creative imagination behind the book. Their unique archives are used to curate playful exhibitions, to inspire lively events, and offer a unique resource for researchers.

Rum för Barn is a library intended for all senses. It has been created and built from a child’s perspective and to suit a child’s scale. Its programme includes music, art, science, drama and film activities. A visit to Tio Tretton could involve making ravioli in the library kitchen and browsing through the cookbooks, putting together a costume with one of the sewing machines and leafing through books about textiles, or sharing a broadcast or film made on one of the library’s iPads.

Featuring Kate Edmonds, Director of Seven Stories (National Centre for Children’s Books – UK); Eina McHugh, Director of The Ark and Fulbright Scholar; and Helena Gomér, Chief Children’s Librarian at Rum för Barn and Tio Tretton, part of Stockholm’s stunning Culture House, Kulterhuset Stadsteatern (Sweden). Baby BEEF Independent Art Press | Call for Submissions

We started Baby BEEF in 2006 as a contributor based zine of art, poetry, stories, photography and articles. We did this to give ourselves and people like us an outlet and platform for our work to be seen, outside of a gallery setting. To not wait around for people to discover us but to do it ourselves. We released 3 issues before branching off to do other publications, artist books and projects. In those 3 issues we published artists from all over the world, distributed them globally by sending them to the contributors and bringing them travelling with us.

We have decided to make Baby BEEF Issue 4 this summer and launch it at this years 4th Annual Dublin Zine Fair in August.

We are looking of submissions of art, poetry, stories and articles. We celebrate the handmade and love anything analogue, so we are not looking for digital artwork. Pretty much anything goes. If you have any questions let us know.

Submit to: babybeefheart@hotmail.com

7th ANNUAL 126 MEMBERS' SHOW

14th - 27th of July, as part of the Galway Arts Festival

CURATED BY Paul McAree

Closing Date for Submissions by email, June 6th, 2014 at 4pm

As part of our continued commitment to support our membership, 126 is delighted to announce a call out for submissions for its 7th Annual Members’ Show. 126 is grateful for the financial and moral support of its members and each year offers this special opportunity to exhibit their work. The members shows are usually selected by the board and have taken place at various times over the years. This year, with generous support from the Galway Arts Festival, we would like to present the work of our members to the international audience that visit the festival from 14th - 27th of July.

To develop this exhibition, we are delighted to announce Paul McAree as curator. McAree is founder of FLOOD, Dublin, a contemporary art project in Dublin city. FLOOD has hosted several group exhibitions including artists Michelle Browne, Alan Butler, Martin Healy, Nevan Lahart, Beatriz Olabarrieta, and Suzanne Treister, a commissioned publication by artist Kevin Atherton, and printed projects with Theresa Nanigian, Terry Atkinson, and Flávia Müller Medeiros. McAree is also Exhibitions and Events Co-ordinator at Lismore Castle Arts in Waterford. Previously McAree worked at Breaking Ground, Tate Modern and Ikon Gallery Birmingham.

While the call for entries is wide open, McAree is particularly interested in work which is conscious of the process of an artwork's journey from studio to gallery, and the questioning and contesting of an artwork's autonomy. This could be work which is concerned with the physicality of its own construction, to work which is overtly about exhibition and display, looking and meaning. 126 invites members to submit work in any medium. In addition an award of a two week residency in the gallery will be made to an artist chosen by the curator and announced at the opening on the 15th July 2014.

Submissions are by email only to contact@126.ie. The deadline for submissions is June 6th at 4pm. Please title the email “7TH ANNUAL MEMBERS SHOW” and include a description of proposed work (Max 500 words), images of proposed work, an artist’s statement and CV in PDF FORMAT ONLY.

The financial contribution of our membership is invaluable. It helps support our strong programme of unconventional and international art exhibitions. One year's membership costs €10 to students/unwaged or €20 to those with a wage. You can also support us further by becoming a 'Friend of 126' for €50 or 'Patron of 126' for €250. Just drop in to the gallery to join up or you can use paypal through our website www.126.ie. Membership is open to anyone over the age of 18 that supports our aims.

The Annual Members’ Show is a vital part of 126. It is open to all members and is a great opportunity for emerging artists. We encourage our members to make exhibition proposals throughout the year. In addition to this, 126 members have access to discounted rates on a number of events including workshops, seminars and screenings. Invitations and opportunities to take part in 126 projects and collaborations throughout the programme year are offered to current 126 members only. Members can also avail of listing a link to their website from the 126 website.

All-Ireland Complaints Choir Competition -A Call for Choirs

This is a call for choirs to enter the Complaints Choir Competition at this year’s All-Ireland Performing Arts Conference in Limerick.  On Thursday 5 June, there will be a competition to find the outstanding All-Ireland Complaints Choir.
Complaints Choirs are an outrageously good fun way for people to let off steam while still making their point. If you’re not familiar with the concept, it is explained here.
Here’s a (funny) video of a Birmingham Complaints Choir performance:

Entries
As the Complaints Choir Competition Co-ordinator, Hilary O’Shaughnessy is looking to recruit at least 5 choirs, one from Belfast, Cork, Dublin, Galway and Limerick with as many people in each as possible.  A Musical Director and a Captain will be appointed for each competing choir and they’ll be responsible for rehearsing the group before the conference.  Each will perform one song (about 4/6 minutes duration is fine) of their own collective composition. Hilary can help with text too, although we all have lots to complain about!
On Thursday evening, 5 June, the competition will take place in Limerick’s wonderful Milk Market starting at 8.30pm, early enough for you to relax after your performance and enjoy the evening too.
Are you interested?  Sound like a challenge? Enter the Complaints Choir Competition and Hilary will put you in touch with a Choir Captain.
Get in touch with Hilary O’Shaughnessy, at hilaryos@aol.com or on +353 (87) 944 3776 with any questions, suggestions or entries.

Early Bird Ticket offer extended
Over 200 delegates have already booked conference tickets.  The Early Bird Ticket offer has been extended until 5pm this Friday, 23 May.  Book before then and get your conference ticket for €80, which covers access to all conference sessions, your lunch on both days as well as dinner and attendance at the All-Ireland Complaints Choir Competition in Limerick’s Milk Market on Thursday 5 June. From 24 May, the ticket price will be €110 for members.

Some Early Bird Accommodation still available
Book Limerick’s 4* Clarion Hotel or the convenient off-campus Courtbrack Accommodation before 5pm this Friday, 23 May to get early bird rates.

Living Arts Project – Arts in Education Visual Artists | Call for Expression of Interest

The Arts Department of Wexford County Council and Wexford Arts Centre in partnership with the Arts Council are now seeking applications from interested visual artists to partake in our annual Living Arts Project commencing in September 2014.

Established in 2013, the Living Arts Project is a long-term visual arts educational scheme which consolidates the existing partnership between the Arts Department of Wexford County Council (WCC) and Wexford Arts Centre (WAC), and intends to make engagement with, and understanding of, the fundamentals of contemporary visual art even more attainable for local audiences.

In order to facilitate this development, the scheme is comprised of an artist in residence programme for all interested primary schools in County Wexford and all practicing artists resident in County Wexford.

Following a review of each schools expression of interest; four artists will be selected and appointed to the relevant schools to create a body of work over the school year. This residency will prioritise the development of the artist’s work within the project and use this development to in turn encourage competent engaging work from the participating pupils. It is the implicit intention of WCC and WAC to consider visual artists working in all and every mode of artistic practice in order to provide schools with the opportunity to access as wide a variety of art making approaches as possible so as to encourage better understanding of contemporary practice in addition to more established methods of creating art. The programme will culminate in an exhibition of works by artists and pupils from all participating schools at Wexford Arts Centre in April/May 2015. This is of particular importance as not only do pupils have the opportunity to benefit from the detailed guidance of such a programme, they also will see their work exhibited in an art gallery context for their friends, family and community to view.

We are now receiving applications from visual artists interested in participating in the Project. For further information on the Living Arts Project and how to apply please click: www.wexfordartscentre.ie/application-process-2014-15.html
