Ballina Film Club presents… David Lynch
April-May 2014
Ballina Film Club this year celebrates the twisted genius of David Lynch. Since the late 1970s Lynch has emerged as a singular talent in American cinema, with his trademark aesthetic and surreal vision marking such films as Eraserhead, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive.
Throughout April and May, we will screen a selection of the greatest works of this true cinematic artist.

Grace Kelly plays Tracy Lord, a holier-than-thou ice goddess who, having been through one marriage to likeable musician CK Dexter Haven (Bing Crosby), is about to enter another with a rather stuffy, boring social climber. Dexter and Mike Connor (Frank Sinatra), a reporter covering the nuptials, help Tracy find her human side and realize whom she really should marry. High Society from 1956 is a musical remake of The Philadelphia Story and features classic songs by Cole Porter and a great appearance by Louis Armstrong and his band.

Quartet
Friday 23rd May, 2pm
Lifelong friends Wilf (Billy Connolly) and Reggie (Tom Courtney), together with former colleague Cissy, (Pauline Collins), are residents of Beecham House, a home for retired opera singers. Each year on Giuseppe Verdi’s birthday, the residents unite to give a concert to raise funds for their home. But when Jean Horton (Maggie Smith), a former grande dame of the opera fallen on hard times, (also Reggie’s ex-wife and the fourth and most celebrated member of their former quartet), moves into the home; to everyone’s surprise, the plans for this year’s concert start to unravel. As old grudges threaten to undermine past glories and theatrical temperaments play havoc with the rehearsal schedule, it becomes apparent that having four of the finest singers in English operatic history under one roof offers no guarantee that the show will go on.

Gloria
Chile 2012 110mins Spanish with English subtitles
Gloria is a vivacious, free-spirited divorcee who gets on with her grown up children, is fairly happy in her work, and contents herself with the one-night stands that she finds in the singles bars of Santiago. Defiant in her fragile happiness, she meets and in due course falls for quietly-spoken ‘silver fox’ Rodolfo, a fellow divorcee who clearly adores her, but who comes with baggage and family ties of his own. Is this true love, and if so, can it endure, or will the past get in the way? Underpinned by a superb central performance by Paulina García as Gloria, director Sebastián Lelio examines the trajectories of older age set in the milieu of the contemporary middle-class of Chile’s Pinochet generation.

Grace Kelly plays Tracy Lord, a wilful, beautiful but ever so stuck-up ice goddess who, having been through one marriage to likeable musician CK Dexter Haven (Bing Crosby), is about to enter another with stuffy but dependable George (John Lund). Her plans for a sensational socialite wedding are, however, dashed by a series of troublesome events. Dexter and Mike Connor (Frank Sinatra), a reporter covering the nuptials, help Tracy find her human side and realise whom she really should marry! This delightful, high gloss musical remake of The Philadelphia Story gets it gloriously right, featuring the classic Cole Porter songs High Society, Well Did You Evah and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, as well as a cameo appearance by Louis Armstrong and his band. A pure Hollywood classic, directed by Charles Walters. Sit back and enjoy!

Philomena
UK 2013 97mins English language
Based on the real-life story of Philomena Lee, out-of-work journalist Martin Sixsmith meets up by chance with a woman who 50 years earlier was sent to a convent after she became pregnant and subsequently forced give up her baby son, a child that was sold into adoption by the Catholic Church. Armed only with the most meagre information, Philomena and the journalist travel to the United States in an attempt to find her long-lost son. Directed by veteran director Stephen Frears, the film finds two main actors in superb form: Judi Dench as the mild-mannered but indomitable mother and comedian and actor Steve Coogan as hard-nosed ex-BBC journalist Martin Sixsmith – an unlikely but ultimately triumphant odd couple in a film that elegantly balances humour with quiet anger and humanity.
