Silent Moves: Aideen Barry with the Training Ridgepool Centre and Scannán Technologies

6th – 28th February

Throughout the month of February, Ballina Arts Centre will present an exhibition of video and photography works from the making of the Mayo IGNITE project, Silent Moves.

The project involved visual artist Aideen Barry working with Western care’s Ridgepool Training Centre and Scannán Technologies group. The result of the collaboration was Silent Moves, a half-hour silent film which explored some aspects of disabled life.

This exhibition will feature footage and images from the film as well as the process of making it.

IGNITE is a new platform designed to generate Ireland’s most ambitious showcasing of talent from people with disabilities, led by international and Irish artists and performers with disabilities, with projects taking place in 2014 in Cork, Galway and Mayo. These commissions each represented an investment of up to €60,000.

Silent Moves was commissioned by Mayo County Council as part of IGNITE

IGNITE is managed by a unique partnership involving the Arts Council, Arts & Disability Ireland (ADI), Cork City Council, Galway City and County Councils, and Mayo County Council.

Silent Moves exhibition runs until 28th February. Admission free, all welcome.

Custom House Studios at Westport Quay are pleased to host an exhibition of new works by Gavin Porter until February 15th 2015 at Custom House Studios Gallery.

Gavin Porter is a Belfast born Artist living in County Roscommon.  His artistic output consists of drawing, etching, sound installation and assemblage, with etching being his main medium of choice. In 2013 he was one of three emerging artists chosen for In Isolation, at Broadstone Studios, Dublin, In 2014, Gavin was selected for an inaugural residency at  Harrington Studios, King House, Boyle, and later that year was awarded first prize at the North West Open exhibition in Leitrim Sculpture Centre. He is currently working on his first solo show at Custom House Gallery Westport, in January 2015

‘’ Forms depicted by Gavin Porter have a clear recurrent structure, but they seem to have no start and no end. They are in a continuous but unpredictable process of development, as if they were never to complete their forming. We can observe the same process in our everyday lives, filled with repetitive tasks performed as part of our daily routines and with efforts of which results can rarely be clearly predicted, our existence is built of patterns but is still full of uncertainty.”

Marta Slawinska, Curator In Isolation 3 emerging Artists at Broadstone Studios, Dublin

An exhibition of new works by Sarah Lundy entitled sign:symbol:sigil at  Custom House Studios  Gallery  until February 15th 2015.

Through the use of moving image, assemblage of quotidian objects and ephemeral performance materials, the works endeavour to negotiate provocative arrangement and question autonomy in the face of innate and applied homogenization.

Repetition features regularly in my practice, often manifesting itself in large-scale sculptural pieces that prompt dialogue on the systems that govern our existence. This meditation on systems is often juxtaposed starkly with single and singular items displaced and then displayed.

The aesthetic is post-minimalist with a focus on eloquent paradoxes of form and function, and their relationship to identity, with frequent reference to the feminine perspective.
