John Brady - Drawings

Official Opening 15th May, at 8pm

John Brady produces work which is a playful mix of contemporary concerns, personal motifs and the everyday. From his early days studying in Art College Brady has always been fascinated by the notion of art as a language.

The inherent paradoxes involved in making art in contemporary West of Ireland have resulted in a body of work that continues to evolve in response to these concerns. He studied painting in GMIT Galway and later in the Crawford College of Art, Cork and completed his Winchester Masters in European Fine Art programme at Barcelona Campus, Spain.

This exhibition comprises a series of sketchbook drawings completed on his travels in Europe and Asia.

Drawings runs until 4th July. Admission: free

Vicky Smith - A Final Soar Into Orbit

Friday 17th April - Saturday 23rd May

Featuring an atmospheric installation, photography, film work and figurative clay sculptures, Vicky Smith reflects on “the disappearance of an RAF pilot, the legacy that has resulted over three generations, strong independent women and an obsession with flight and missions to space”. The nature of the work is inspired by her great grandfather, the book Astronaut Wives Club by Lily Koppel, and the Life magazine images taken from this time, her grandfather’s photographs and the re-appropriated fictional TV character Arthur Daley, the wheeler dealer character from the great British criminal underworld. Within this installation the artists examines this legacy resulting in a fictional end to the story. Vicky Smith’s practise is predominately installation based often composed of paintings, photographs, sculpture, text, found objects and film that explore the tendency of art to be effective in the real world, miscommunication and translation between art forms and concepts. Smith is a visual artist who works at Engage Arts Studios in Galway. She has an MA from NCAD’s Faculty of Visual Culture, Art in the Contemporary World (2011), MA Arts Administration and Cultural Policy from Goldsmiths College, University of London (2004) and a BA and H.Dip from Crawford College of Art and Design, Cork (1999). She is currently joint project coordinator of Engage Art Studio Project.

National Drawing Day - Landscape In Line - VISUAL ART: FOYER

Saturday 16th – Saturday 23rd May

Landscape in Line is an exhibition devised by visual artist and curator Ian Wieczorek that invites people to contribute their drawings to make up a collective, joined up landscape drawing. Drawing is one of the fundamental human creative activities, one that can be traced back both thousands of years in human history and also to early years of childhood development. Landscape In Line presents a joined up ‘ribbon’ landscape made up from individual drawings submitted as part of an open callout. Playful, inventive and engaging, the results of this invitation are on show for you to enjoy in this celebration of the act of drawing.

Presented in association with the National Drawing Day.

Patricia Doherty

May 14th  – June 7th

A Painter who’s works references drawing, mark making and the formal elements of visual rhetoric. Within the process, form and structure are altered: undoing, layering and replacing one configuration for another. Focus shifts as influences occur and leave traces of past considerations behind. The content is pared down and the paintings become the by-product of a thought process, constructing their own independent variation of imaginary form.

An Exhibition of paintings by Californian artist, Ryan Reynolds, "Terrestrial"

2 - 25 May, opening at 8:30, refreshments served, everyone welcome.

Terrestrial is defined as of, on, or relating to the earth.

Ryan's painting practice is rooted in the quiet observation of the natural world. It is through the landscape - through terra - that he explores the boundaries between light, space, solid form, and memory.

Like layers of sediment, transparent watercolor is slowly built up to create areas of intricate detail. Isolated in empty space, landscape formations are decontextualized and re-imagined. No longer tethered, these ‘new’ forms allow for new observations and insights into the familiar.

Ryan Reynolds received a MFA in art practice from UC Berkeley Department in 2003. Before that he studied at University of California, Santa Cruz. Ryan lives in California, USA.
