Something About Home - Book Launch / Literary Event, Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar Monday 10th April @ 8.00pm Adm: €5

"Something About Home" (Geography Publications) is a unique anthology that provides an invigorating array of creative responses to the experience of migration. It features 60 original works of poetry, fiction and non-fiction by 39 writers of all ages from across Ireland and Britain. To celebrate the launch of this anthology the Linenhall Arts Centre is hosting a public interview with multi-award-winning Mayo writer Mike McCormack, mediated by Dr Liam Harte (University of Manchester, and editor of the anthology). This event will also feature readings by four of the other Mayo contributors to the anthology.

Something About Home originated in a series of ‘Writing Migration’ workshops held at the Linenhall Arts Centre (facilitated by Mike McCormack), as well as in Belfast and Manchester. Most of the contributors to the collection have direct, first-hand experience of living in another country, in some cases for most of their lives. None has remained untouched by the effects of migration, even those who have never, or not yet, left home. The anthology will be available for purchase on the night.

Catch Kathy Raftery's "Mayo Boy, Vietnam Hero", radio documentary on Sunday April 2 on RTE Radio 1 at 7pm

Among the 58,000 names inscribed on the Vietnam war memorial wall in Washington DC is that of corporal Patrick 'Bob' Gallagher. Patrick grew up near Ballyhaunis in rural county Mayo before emigrating to the United States in the early 1960s. Patrick joined the US Marine Corps and was stationed in Vietnam during some of the most intense fighting of the war. Patrick was just 23 years old and a Marine Corporal when he was killed on duty in southeast Asia. Just months before he died, Patrick was awarded a Navy Cross, the second highest honor in the US military. Like many war dead, Patrick is remembered by his family in Ireland and his friends and comrades who served with him in combat.

Kathy Raftery's mother was a friend of Patrick Gallagher before he emigrated to the US. They grew up together near Ballyhaunis on the Roscommon Mayo border. In the documentary Kathy hears from those who knew Patrick, his family and comrades and hears about the extraordinary act of bravery that warranted him receiving a Navy Cross. She meets with two Marines who were alongside Patrick near Da Nang in Vietnam on March 30th, 1967 when he died just weeks after he received his medal.

Such was Patrick's act of heroism that his family and friends have now started a campaign to have a US services vessel named after this Irish born Vietnam war hero.

Mayo County council invites anyone with an interest in culture, creativity or heritage to a briefing eveing on Creative Ireland in Lough Lanngh Holiday village Castlebar on Friday March 31st.

Mayo County Council warmly invites you to attend an open meeting and discussion about Creative Ireland a major new culture and creativity initiative of the Government of Ireland designed to get communities actively engaged with culture and heritage at Lough Lannagh Holiday Village, Castlebar on Friday, March 31st 2017 from 5.30pm. RSVP essential to: avaughan@mayococo.ie or 094 9047923

Enabling creativity in every community is a core pillar of the Creative Ireland Programme, an ambitious five-year initiative, from 2017 to 2022, which will place our strongest assets – our culture and creative communities - at the centre of public policy. In 2016, Mayo County Council demonstrated their unique capacity to activate and support community engagement and participation in marking the Centenary year through a wide range of arts, culture and heritage initiatives.

Creative Ireland aims to build on this success by leading on the development of a dedicated Culture and Creativity plan for Mayo based on the premise that participation in cultural activity drives personal and collective creativity, with significant implications for individual and societal wellbeing.  2017 will see a special focus on children and young people with the specific objective of fast-tracking the Charter for Arts in Education, which will significantly increase access and participation for children in high quality arts and culture experiences.

A network of highly experienced arts officers, heritage officers and librarians has been set up across all 31 local authorities to lead on each county’s Creative Ireland Programme and a series of public meetings will be held over the next four weeks to share ideas, develop collaborations and explore opportunities for increased investment in local arts, culture and creative industries. Additional funding to support the initiative will be made available through the Creative Ireland Programme in 2017 with the potential for further investment over the next four years. Austin Vaughan has been appointed Creative Ireland co-ordinator for Mayo County Council.

Speaking about the Creative Ireland programme in advance of the open meeting in Mayo, Taoiseach Enda Kenny, T.D., said "I launched Creative Ireland last December in our National Gallery, which is nearing completion following a €20 million refurbishment project over six years. We chose the National Gallery to launch the Creative Ireland programme - because of the symbolism of a new beginning, a blank canvas as it were, a link between the past and the future. The open meeting in Mayo is a fantastic opportunity for those at local level to get involved and I hope to attend some of the county workshops around the country to hear their ideas first hand. I encourage those involved in the cultural and creative communities around Mayo to attend the open meeting in Lough Lannagh, Castlebar on Friday, 31st March. It is important to recognise that if we do not create our own future, we run the risk that it will be created for us. Together we can do extraordinary things and this is your opportunity to join the discussion about how the Creative Ireland programme will enable creativity for all our citizens."

In addition, all the agencies of Government, including national cultural institutions, state agencies, Government Departments, organisations, individuals and communities will be activated to embed creativity across all aspects of their work – and use that creative potential to foster collective wellbeing and social cohesion.

Mayo County Council and the Creative Ireland national team will host an open meeting on March 31st from 5.30pm to 7.30pm to share details about the Programme and to explore opportunities to increase access, engagement and collaboration in the local arts and creative industries in Lough Lannagh Holiday Village, Old Westport Road, Castlebar

Green Fuse presents Jonathan Frisby Interiors

Jonathan Frisby recently returned to Ireland from Florence, Italy where he studied full time at the Florence Academy of Art since 2013. Prior to that Jonathan attended Waterford Institute of Technology where he studied Architecture for 3 years. It was during his time on the Architecture course that Jonathan found his real passion, painting.

At the Florence Academy, there is a strong emphasis on drawing and particularly drawing the human figure. The emphasis of the academy is on close observation of the material world and one can see in these new paintings how Jonathan’s strong technical ability has helped him to confidently express in paint what he observes in the world around him. Many of his oil paintings are painted en plein air as he strives to capture the play of light on the landscape forms. He refuses to paint from photographs preferring to battle the elements and the environment for the spontaneous image.

Jonathan, born 1990, is based in Waterford and is a frequent visitor to Westport where he spent the summer working on some of the paintings in this exhibition.

Marie Wood Exhibition

Marie Wood exhibition, "Just being.." at the Clew Bay Hotel, Westport. April 1st-30th 2017.

Marie Wood has been a practising artist for 16 years, and moved to Mayo from the UK two and a half years ago, (she is originally from Manchester with Donegal family ties).

Following a very successful show last year, Marie is excited to be having her third solo exhibition at the Clew Bay Hotel where she is displaying a new body of work, created over the last twelve months. More than 30 artworks offer a glimpse into the diverse inspirations that encompass her vision. From abstract experimental three dimensional oil paintings to mixed media paintings and collage that have been inspired by the awesome beauty of Clew Bay and its fast shifting weather. Eerie works revealing a moody Croagh Patrick bathed in watery light, sunrises that seem to set the bay on fire, moonlit bays and reflections. The Exhibition is a distil-lation of the magic of this area, revealing a sense of the extraordinary that is Mayo; light, energy and passion are a constant presence throughout.

During the last year Marie has had work on show at The Art House Achill, and will have a solo exhibition at The Ballina Arts Centre in November. Marie has exhibit-ed widely in public and commercial galleries throughout Scotland and England and more recently in Ireland. Her first solo exhibition was in The National Gallery of Scotland, and she has twice exhibited works at The Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. Marie has works in private collections in Ireland, UK, America, Italy and France.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see these unusual and exciting works.

Archiving Activism: A Project by Breda Burns

Archiving Activism Drop-In Day
11am - 4pm
22nd March: Custom House Studios, Westport, Co. Mayo

Artist Breda Burns has been commissioned by Bealtaine Festival 2017 in partnership with Sligo Arts Office and Mayo Arts Office, to develop a sound and radio-based work, 'Archiving Activism', in response to the Bealtaine 2017 theme. A society only progresses when citizens care enough to contribute to its fabric and its future. The arts is the mortar that holds society together and counties Mayo and Sligo are particularly blessed with the contribution its citizens have made to the field. These people are often the unsung architects of a thriving society where people can access music, visual arts, and literature in so many different ways. As a response to this commission, Breda Burns will collate an archive of the vanguards of the arts community and through a series of radio interviews to be broadcast locally, an archive of ephemera relating the artist-led movement in the Sligo/Mayo region. Shackleton's Endurance - Pauline Garavan at Town Hall Theatre Westport

Continues until Saturday 1st April.

Shackleton's Endurance, Words in Oil on Aluminium, Wire, 145 x 95 cms, 2016.

Shackleton’s Endurance is based on the famous night-time photograph taken by Frank Hurley.  He was the photographer on the Endurance Expedition (1914-16), which was led by Ernest Shackleton.  The work was created specially to mark the centenary of the rescue of the crew of his ship ‘Endurance’ after it had become trapped and crushed in the Antarctic ice pack.

The image, measuring 145 x 96 cms, is made up of thousands of very closely condensed words which are taken from the extracts of Shackleton’s diary that he kept on the Endurance Expedition and which he included in his book ‘South’.

The words are written on aluminium using oil paints.  The words are combined, sometimes compressed together and sometimes lightly inscribed and spaced, to make the image.

The image therefore requires close attention to the texture of letters and words which serve as the building blocks for the whole image.
