Mayo Arts Office and Mid West Radio celebrate Poetry Day Ireland – Thursday April 27th
Tune in to hear Mayo Arts Office and Mid West Radio, celebrate Poetry Day Ireland, an initiative of Poetry Ireland.
To celebrate Poetry Day Ireland 2017, poets Geraldine Mitchell and John F Deane, will read some of their poetry on Tommy Marren’s show on Midwest radio (96.1fm) at 9.30am on Thursday 27th of April. The recording will later be circulated by Mayo Arts Office via social media.
Geraldine Mitchell: is a Dublin-born writer who lives near Louisburgh, Co. Mayo. Her third collection of poems, Mountains for Breakfast, will be published in March 2017. Her two previous collections are World Without Maps (Arlen House, 2011) and Of Birds and Bones (Arlen House, 2014). She won the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award in 2008 and, in 2012, the inaugural Trócaire-Poetry Ireland poetry competition. She was placed third in the Strokestown International Poetry Competition in 2014. Geraldine has also written two novels for young people and Deeds Not Words, the biography of Castlebar-born Muriel Gahan (1897-1995). www.geraldinemitchell.net
John F Deane: was born on Achill Island. He founded Poetry Ireland - the National Poetry Society - and The Poetry Ireland Review. He has published several collections of poetry and some fiction. He won the O’Shaughnessy Award for Irish Poetry, the Marten Toonder Award for Literature and poetry prizes from Italy and Romania. John was shortlisted for both the T.S.Eliot prize and The Irish Times Poetry Now Award, and won residencies in Bavaria, Monaco and Paris. 2011 saw John F Deane become the first Irish writer to win the Golden Key of Smederevo award, a Serbian prize given annually for a body of poetry. He has recently edited 8 issues of Poetry Ireland Review, and is a contributing editor to Poem.
