Calmus Ensemble
For over ten years the remarkable Calmus Ensemble has wowed audiences with its unique style of a capella singing, blending five scintillating and soulful voices - four male and one female - in a clear-voiced, perfectly balanced ensemble. Originally formed by five graduates of the St. Thomas Boys‘ Choir, Leipzig, the group added the glittering soprano voice of Anja Lipfert in 2001 in order to expand their repertoire, which now encompasses everything from Gregorian chants, Irish airs, jazz and folk songs to the music of Palestrina, Bach and Debussy. Acclaimed for its flawless intonation and extraordinary harmonic amalgam, this award-winning ensemble has toured extensively in Europe, North and South America and performed alongside the likes of the King’s Singers and the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet. Part of a Music Network tour.

MUSIC LECTURE
Thursday 14th April @ 8.00pm
Michael Gray - Searching for Blind Willie McTell: A Biographer in the Deep South
Michael Gray is a music historian who has written extensively about popular music. He is regarded as a leading authority on the life and work of Bob Dylan (he is the author of Song & Dance Man III: The Art Of Bob Dylan and the Bob Dylan Encyclopedia), and has also written books on Elvis Presley and Frank Zappa. Michael’s talk Searching for Blind Willie McTell is based on his book Hand Me My Travelin’ Shoes: In Search of Blind Willie McTell, which was shortlisted for the 2008 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Biography, and described by the Fox 5 channel as “the definitive bio on the bluesman who has inspiried scores of modern musicians including The Allman Brothers, The White Stripes and Bob Dylan”. The event discusses the special difficulties of researching the life of a creative artist from an oral culture and who lived at a time when officialdom didn’t bother to generate paperwork on black people in the South. (McTell died in 1959.) Witty, effusive and self-deprecating, Michael Gray is a masterful speaker, well known for his lively, funny, stimulating and authoritative talks.
