Bruiser Theatre Co. - Othello
“O! beware, my lord, of jealousy; It is the green-ey'd monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on.”
Bruiser Theatre Company explodes onto the stage with an electrifying contemporary take on Shakespeare’s most brutal and gripping thriller-tragedy of love, paranoia, jealousy and murder. The story of General Othello, his love for the beautiful Desdemona and their tragic downfall at the hands of the scheming and manipulative Iago. In typically exciting, engaging and physical style, as previous productions (The Government Inspector, Candide, Oh What A Lovely War, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui) testify, this Bruiser adaptation is bareknuckle Shakespeare for today, in an adaptation by Stewart Parker Award-winner Patrick J. O’Reilly. None of Shakespeare’s script is modernised, yet those who might be fearful of the Bard will find this gritty, breathless drama both exhilarating and relevant!

Gúna Nua Theatre Co. - Little Gem
Love, sex, birth, death, dildos and salsa classes: Little Gem sees three generations of Dublin women on a wild and constantly surprising journey, expertly blending slapstick humour and sharp comic timing with strength, courage and honesty. Kay’s got an itch that Gem can’t scratch (but maybe Kermit can)… Lorraine’s boss wants her to see a psychiatrist… Amber has fierce bad indigestion and the sambucas aren’t getting rid of it. And then there’s Paul, the bollix, who is just using Amber until he can get to Australia… and the hairy man who fancies Lorraine but fails to rise to the occasion… and of course Gem , who doesn’t like the neighbours coming in to ‘mind’ him. If all that wasn’t bad enough, Little Gem makes his presence felt and life is never the same again. Starring Anne Kent (Fair City’s Angela O'Connell), Neili Conroy and Birdy Beaman, directed by Paul Meade. After sell-out seasons in New York, London, Paris and Ireland’s National Theatre and an upcoming tour of Australia, the ever popular Little Gem undertakes a countrywide tour. Don’t miss it.

‘Frankie’ goes to ... Belmullet!
Following the hugely successful, sell-out tour in 2010, Five Lamps Theatre Company, again present Dear Frankie, and will stage it in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet, on Friday, April 15. For over 20 years, Frankie Byrne ruled supreme on the airwaves with her iconic show The Women’s Page. In an era without self-help books or the internet, information was pretty hard to come by. Luckily, there was Frankie Byrne. Dear Frankie celebrates the eclectic life and times of Frankie Byrne, Ireland’s first radio agony aunt. The various and authentic problems written to her and heard throughout the play offer a fascinating insight into the hang-ups, concerns and sorrows of Ireland in the 1960’s and 70’s.
Niamh Gleeson’s play, in which the wonderful Nuala Hayes plays the title role, will provide an evening of nostalgia to all those who remember Byrne’s unique responses to Ireland’s lovesick women, dispensed in her comforting, but gravelly, tones. The drama also provides us with an incredible insight into Byrne’s own private life – including a 30-year affair, a love child, and alcoholism. One letter to the agony aunt poses the question, “Dear Frankie, my boyfriend put his hand on my knee at the pictures and I’m worried I might be pregnant.” You won’t know whether to laugh or cry! However, you’ll most certainly cry if you miss the opportunity to see this performance! See Dear Frankie in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet, at 8pm on Friday, April 15. Tickets €15 / €12.
