Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky
France 2009 132mins French & Russian with English subtitles
In 1920, fashion designer Coco Chanel befriended composer Igor Stravinsky, offering the penniless musician and his family refuge in her country mansion. Director Jan Kounen takes the rumoured affair that may have ensued between avant garde composer and fashion revolutionary, and delivers a beautifully judged story about the mutual attraction between two iconoclastic giants, finely balanced as it is by the loyalty and love Stravinsky feels for his wife and family.

A Room and A Half (Poltory komnaty ili sentimentalnoe puteshestvie na rodinu)
Russia 2009 130 mins Russian with English subtitles
A unique journey to the early life of Nobel Prize-winning Russian poet Joseph Brodsky and the country of his youth, an ironical fairy tale in which the poet crosses not only geographical barriers but barriers of time as well. The film, directed by Andrey Khrzhanovskiy, blends fiction, animation and historical footage to create a compelling evocation of St. Petersburg in the 1950s and 60s as, consumed by nostalgia, an aging, exiled Brodsky reminisces about the country that shaped him as a writer and a Russian.

The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos)
Argentina 2009 129mins Spanish with English subtitles
Retired Buenos Aires prosecutor Benjamín Espósito sets out to write a novel based on a case that has haunted him for over 20 years: the rape and murder of a beautiful young woman in 1974. Reconnecting Benjamín with Irene Menéndez, his senior prosecutor of the time, the film coolly places itself between present and flashback 1970s Argentina, an ugly, paranoid era of military junta and the ‘disappeared’, of corruption and violence both political and opportunistic. Juan José Campanella's assured and tightly paced feature, full of smart dialogue and powerful, moving performances, was Winner of Best Foreign Language Film at this year’s Oscars.

Fifty-something Germain lives a quiet life. At the local bar with his girlfriend Annette, in the park where he counts the pigeons, or in the vegetable garden where he grows produce to take to market. One day, in the park, he meets Margueritte, an old lady whose work as a scientist took her all over the world. She has a passion for literature, which she soon shares with Germain. Before long, a true bond of affection unites them, and Germain realizes that he has the right to take control of his destiny... - Montreal Film Festival
