Tuesday 1st March @ 8.00pm. The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos). Argentina 2009 129mins Spanish with English subtitles
Retired Buenos Aires prosecutor Benjamín Espósito sets out to write a novel based on a case that has haunted him for over 20 years: the rape and murder of a beautiful young woman in 1974. Reconnecting Benjamín with Irene Menéndez, his senior prosecutor of the time, the film coolly places itself between present and flashback 1970s Argentina, an ugly, paranoid era of military junta and the ‘disappeared’, of corruption and violence both political and opportunistic. Juan José Campanella's assured and tightly paced feature, full of smart dialogue and powerful, moving performances, was Winner of Best Foreign Language Film at this year’s Oscars. Adm: €5
WORLD CINEMA. Tuesday 15th March @ 8.00pm. White Material. France 2009 102mins French with English subtitles
Maria Vial is a white coffee farmer in a postcolonial African country where law and order is breaking down, incited by inflammatory media broadcasts targeting the colonial white population. In the face of increasing personal danger, Maria refuses to leave the plantation that is her livelihood and the home she shares with husband André and unbiddable son Manuel. Starring Isabelle Huppert in the central role, director Claire Denis’ latest film is enriched by her own experience of growing up in Africa, and is full of subtle, unspoken and unexplained complexities, with the threat of violence exerting an increasingly menacing presence.
Tuesday 29th March @ 8.00pm. The Illusionist. UK/France 2010 79 mins French with English subtitles
Sylvain Chomet’s long awaited follow-up to Belleville Rendez-vous is another animated masterpiece, this time based on an unproduced script by French comedy legend Jaques Tati. Relocated from the original Prague setting to Scotland, this poignant story follows a down-at-heel magician Tatischeff (Tati's real name) in the last days of variety theatre, and the star-struck young girl Alice who joins him on his travels. Respecting the original storytelling style and pace, the magnificent result is both an act of homage and cinematic love. Adm: 5 euro
“Stunning… a startling combination of pictorial loveliness and wonderful melancholy.… Nothing less than a modern classic.” - Trevor Johnston, Time Out
“Utterly distinctive and beguiling, with its own language and grammar of innocence: gentle, affectionate, whimsical, but deeply felt.” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
“A true masterpiece of visual enchantment.” - Rex Reed, New York Observer
