The Old Deanery, in the historic fishing village of Killala, north Mayo, is offering a range of residential creative writing courses for 2011.
You will stay in the beautiful Old Deanery Cottages overlooking remote Killala Bay, writing and creating in a friendly and supportive environment under the guidance of professional, experienced tutors. Group workshops will be held in the Joe Keane Creative Centre, a restored Victorian stables adjacent to the cottages.
SPRING COURSES: For our spring residential courses, your tutors will be the award-winning memoir writer Brian Leyden, author of The Home Place, and the talented storybook artist, Jane Dunn.
Memoir Writing Weekend Friday 4th – Sunday 6th March
Memoir writing weekends run from Friday afternoon to Sunday lunchtime, and involve writing workshops, individual tuition and group readings, all with Brian’s guidance and support. You will leave with a bound volume of your work.
Life Storybook Weekend Friday 8th – Sunday 10th April
Jane’s life storybook workshops are about making small creative books using writing, collage, painting and sewing to tell your story in a personal and symbolic way. Feel free to bring your own photographs and other memorabilia to include in your finished book.
Midweek Memoirs

Our midweek courses offer a combination of memoir writing and life storybook making, working with both Brian and Jane. There will also be time to relax and to get to know historic Killala and its spectacular surroundings.

Weekend course: €230 per person. Mid-week course: €330. Prices based on shared rooms. If you would like a single room, there is a small supplement of €20. Lunch provided. Check-in for all courses from 3pm on day of arrival. Introductory session begins at 5.30pm. Check-out is 1.30pm on day of departure. Courses are limited to 15 participants. Groups and individuals welcome. Community groups can apply for 100% Leader funding towards the tuition element of the course. Core Theatre College Workshop Programme 2011
Core Theatre College is launching their workshop programme for this year. After a successful start in September the decision was made to run workshops in 2011 from March to May before auditions start for the main course in September.
We open our workshop programme with a show reel workshop on the 5th and 6th of March. David Power from Power Pictures will help to film and edit your own personal show reel. David Power is a director and producer with his own Production Company who has done numerous DVD’s and documentary’s for RTE.
On the 26th and 27th of March we have a Mask workshop with Miquel Barcelo from The Gombeens. A master in using commedia dell’Arte masks this is a workshop that will change your view on using masks in theatre.
During the Easter week (25-29 April) we will be running a Chekhov/Lecoq workshop that will run a full week from Monday to Friday. Max Hafler and Judith Higgins will run an intensive workshop week where the Body and the Imagination are used as the principle planks of working on a character.
Our last workshop is on the 28th and 29th of May. Pat O’Reilly will give a workshop in Light design that is not only aimed at light designers but also at actors and directors.

The choral conducting course, commences on March 12th at TCD Music Department. The vocal production course, commencing on 5th March, is being run once again in association with the Leinster School of Music and Drama at Griffith College, South Circular Road. The MA Art in Public has evolved from current complex concerns for the role of art / artists in a changing society. The MA focuses on a wide set of contexts, it is based in and responds to Belfast, where engaged art practices have been developed in various “public” spaces for many years.
The programme seeks to develop testing modes of working that are dialogic, participatory, interventionist or collaborative in intention and structure.
Throughout the programme students will work with formal / informal external partners and be expected to develop self initiated, innovative practice based approaches.
The programme is run full-time over 3 semesters – a period of 18 months including a summer break. Part-time it is run over a 3 year period.

Artist Nigel Rolfe will host a Masterclass on Weds 2nd March in Cork and Weds 9th March in Dublin, as part of the Professional Development Workshops organised by the National Sculpture Factory and the Visual Artists Ireland (VAI). Nigel Rolfe's own art practice encompasses many media that include sound, video and photography but his reputation has been formed through 30 years of working in Live Art and performance at the highest level across Europe, North America and Japan.
His masterclass, ‘Working Out and Working In’, not only describes site as a place but having an identity both outside and or within the self. Rolfe proposes to create a group dynamic which can act both as an audience and a critical mass or platform from which each artist/creative can generate a live work. The rules are there are no rules; that the work be direct; that something is risked; that what is made is identified as useful to the participant.
Rolfes’ call to action is: Come prepared to make a live work. travel light, think before action
really want to do this, work can be short and quick or durational. The emphasis is not on the final result be rather the learnt experience which will feed directly into your wider creative practice.
The workshop shall begin with a short introduction by Rolfe followed by a roundtable introduction of each participant. Rolfe’s masterclass will extend the practice of the artists and creatives present and develop their potential to include working live in their future practice.
Rolfe will assess the suitability of each applicant for this workshop through a simple screening process of submissions from each artist/creative and he will make a decision on the appropriateness of each applicant. Nigel Rolfe was born in the Isle of Wight in 1950 and now lives and works in Dublin. Over the past thirty years he has developed his craft of performance and live art and has perfomed across the global from North America throughout Europe right through to Asia. His practice also includes many other media including video, photography and sound.
Retrospectives of his work have been held at the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. He is Senior Course Tutor in Fine Art at the Royal College of Art in London and Senior Visiting Critic at the Royal Academy Schools, London, and the University of Pennsylvania in the USA. For the past three years he is making a continuing series of works in the landscape on civil war sites in the South in the USA .In 2008 there were one person exhibitions of new video works in Paris at the Galerie Polaris and in Dublin at the Green On Red Gallery. He was included in the 2008 Bussan Biennale in S Korea. In 2010 He is working on projects for the Bogside in Derry and in Lough Boora Parklands in Co. Offaly.

There will be six master classes offered in the spring, each taught by distinguished Members of the Academy. The master classes are designed to provide artists with an intensive and informed workshop in a specialist area, taught by artists with a proven and unique knowledge of each area. These will include a sculpture master class with Eilis O’Connell RHA, an anti master class with Alice Maher ARHA, life painting with Una Sealy ARHA and a still-life class with Stephen McKenna PPRHA. Other classes will be led by John Behan RHA and Brian Bourke HRHA. Each master class specifies a maximum number of participants so places are limited. To ensure the professional standard of the series, the master class places will be allocated through an application process.Each of the six master classes will be accompanied by an evening lecture given by the artist.The details and schedule of the master classes and lectures will be available in the New Year.
PHILIPPE GAULIER CLOWN WORKSHOP - Dublin, > 11-15 April 2011
Internationally acclaimed clown and acting teacher Philippe Gaulier will conduct a Clown Workshop in Dublin from 11 till 15 April 2011.Early booking is recommended as places are limited. Philippe Gaulier was a master teacher at the Ecole Jacques Lecoq inParis before starting his own school in 1980. After ten years in Paris, he moved his school to London and finally, in 2002, back to France. The Ecole Philippe Gaulier is an important center for theatre training for students from around the world. Philippe’s unique approach to actor training has influenced performing artists as diverse as Emma Thompson, London’s Theatre de Complicite and Sacha Cohen’s Borat and Ali G. “Philippe Gaulier is the greatest living teacher of clown and modern theatre. He is also the funniest man I have ever met. Arts Courses at Newtownbarry House
The fully equipped Artists Studio is in the old Kitchen of Newtownbarry House. It has beautiful light from its two roof light windows making it an excellent painting and drawing studio. It has easels, a room with sinks and a separate room for painting boards or still life. It can accommodate 12 people on the art courses. It also has a separate room for lunch and discussions. Newtownbarry also offers B&B with a delicious dinner for anybody who wishes to stay. There are also plenty of opportunities to do landscape painting or drawing around the grounds and parkland of the house.

Beginners Workshop - 5th & 6th of March
This workshop will concentrate on: ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed, Depth of Field, Composition and how they all relate to each other.
I believe photography is very often over complicated and my aim is for you to leave the workshop after 2 days with a solid understanding of all the above topics. The workshop which will take place around Laragh in Wicklow over the 2 days.
I will provide homemade, tasty, healthy breakfast and lunch on both days!
Digital or Analog SLR cameras with fully manual settings will be required. Tripods are also necessary.
There will be no more than 4 people in the group so that you each receive plenty of personal attention and tuition. This also means places will be on a first come first served basis!

Mixed ability workshop - 12th & 13th of March in Westport!!!
You could not ask for a more perfect location for photography. I lived in westport for 4 years so I know the area very well.
This is my first workshop in Westport as before I have run my mixed ability workshops at the Loop Head Lighthouse.
There are plenty of locations to choose from including seascapes, landscapes and maybe even a rockpool or two.
We will be recapping on the basics and then getting amongst the outdoors, chasing the golden hours of light. Filters (Neutral Density and Polarisers will also be used). We'll also be able to go through your images in the evening to continuously help improve your photographic skills.
Cost of this workshop will be €500 and includes all food and accomodation for 2 nights.

No. of Participants 6Peer Critique - Sculpture & InstallationIt is intended the workshop will create dialogue and openness between artistic peers. The session will foster networking and continued peer support amongst participants. Attendees will be asked to come prepared with a short presentation on their practices and on future projects they would like to develop. After each presentation, discussion will occur in a constructive and supportive manner. A short introductory reading list, focusing on the legacies of conceptual and site-specific practices upon the public realm, will be supplied to participants beforehand.
Biog
Wright is known for her unsettling yet poignant sculptural installations, which use a variety of techniques and materials including photography, plaster, tinfoil, sound, voice and video. She has also worked on larger scale public art projects, collaborating with artists across disciplines; architects, writers and theatre professionals to create works which deal with the indescribable.
Daphne Wright’s work maneuvers things into well-wrought but delicate doubt – shifting between taughtness and mess, it sets imagery, materials and language in constant metaphorical motion. Using a wide range of materials – plaster, tinfoil, video, printmaking, found objects and performance – she creates worlds that are beautiful and rather eerie which feel like the threshold to somewhere new.
A solo exhibition of Wright’s work Traits of Sidney was held at Frith Street Gallery in 2010. Other major solo exhibitions include ‘Prayer Project’ the Quad, Derby2009; Limerick City Art Gallery in 2006; Where Do Broken Hearts Go? at the Douglas Hyde Galley, Dublin in 2000; These Talking Walls at the New Art Centre Sculpture Park and Gallery, Roche Court, Wiltshire; Nonsense and Death at the Sligo Art Gallery, Sligo, Ireland and Sires at Frith Street Gallery, London in 2003. Wright has been involved in several important international group exhibitions, notably 0044 touring PS1, New York; Albright Knox Museum, Buffalo; Crawford Art Gallery, Cork, 1999/2000 and From a Distance: Approaching Landscape at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston.
She has been a recipient of the Paul Hamlyn Award and The Henry Moore Fellowship.
