Thursday 3rd March @ 8.00pm. Dr Tom Duddy - From Folklore to Philosophy: The Life and Work of William Larminie of Castlebar
A talk by Tom Duddy, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy, NUI Galway.
Poet, folklorist and translator William Larminie was born in Castlebar in 1849. In this talk, Tom Duddy will give a brief account of Larminie’s life, and then discuss the three areas in which Larminie made a meaningful contribution to Irish cultural life - the collection of the folklore of the West of Ireland, and the advocacy of both Irish poetry and Irish philosophy. Among the works discussed will be Larminie’s West Irish Folk-Tales and Romances, his own poetry, and his translation of the work of the great Irish-born philosopher John Scottus Eriugena. Tom Duddy teaches Philosophy in the School of Humanities at NUI Galway. His academic publications include A History of Irish Thought and, as editor, Dictionary of Irish Philosophers. He has also published two volumes of poetry - The Small Hours and The Hiding Place. This talk is part of the ‘Humanities in the West’ series of talks sponsored by the School of Humanities, NUI Galway.
